One of our favorite local acts Sad Accordions have just released a split EP with Monahans , each offering up two songs for the endeavor. It's a limited release being put out by new label Mt. Inadale Records , so we're definitely happy to see a new label spring up with Austin bands in mind. The Accordions track definitely continues to show how the band has improved upon their sound, growing into one of the most complete groups in town. We hope you dig this track, and if [...]

Austin's own Monahans releases the final installment in their monthly recording series titled "2010 Recordings". The song is called "Seabirds" and includes Sinéad O'Connor, whom I've been a fan of from "Mandinka", through her cutting edge reggae experimentations, and now this unexpected beautiful collaboration with Monahans. Drummer Roberto Sanchez and his family took a trip to Ireland earlier this year, and he was inspired by the landscape enough to write a beautiful sketch of what was to become "Seabirds". Upon returning to Austin, the band layered upon Rob's sketch in the studio and then added [...]

Austin's own Monahans just released the final installment in their monthly recording series titled "2010 Recordings." The tenth and final song is called "Seabirds", and includes vocals by Sinead O'Connor. About the song: Drummer Roberto Sanchez and his family took a trip to Ireland earlier this year, and he was inspired by the landscape enough to write a beautiful sketch of what was to become "Seabirds". Upon returning to Austin, the band layered upon Rob's sketch in the studio and then added lyrics. It became clear that the one thing missing was a voice. [...]
For those of you paying attention, Austin's Monahans have bee slowly revealing their 2010 Release album one track at a time since March of this year and making them available for download on their site. The final track revealed this year turns out to be a special one, featuring the one and only Sinead O'Connor contributing additional vocals, and this is a bit about how it all came about: "About the song... Drummer Roberto Sanchez and his family took a trip to Ireland earlier this year, and he was inspired by the landscape [...]
Monday, December 13, 2010 I cover local music for Side One: Track One so my year end list is comprised solely of Austin bands. Your list of the top 10 albums of 2010 probably differs quite a bit from mine and that's the way it should be. These are the bands I was most excited about, went to see in concert, the groups I listen to the most and the albums I encouraged others to check out. Let me know if you think I made any major omissions: [...]

Austin's Monahans have been having a pretty decent year during 2010. The band has been slowing releasing tracks from their newest recording simply titled 2010 Recordings making them available for download one a month since March to warm reception. The one and only Robert Plant recorded a Milton Mapes (early version of Monahans) track for his Band of Joy release back in September. And they recently recorded a session for the ACL Satellite Sets, just to name a few highlights of the year. Sunday will find the band closing out the year with a [...]

The other night I saw Monahans open for Husband&Wife 's CD release show at The Bishop , and I was instantly sold. They mentioned during the set that they're releasing a new song every month as a free download. This is something they started in March, and with a ten track album, they'll be finished in December. I'm always intrigued when I hear of artists trying this. The danger is that the songs will sound too disjointed from each other, fighting each other as an album. Of course, that is assuming the intention [...]

Starting in March of this year, Austin based band, Monahans have been releasing a new song each month with plans to go to the end of the year. The band had this to say about their free single for the month of September, "Diamonds": September arrived in Austin along with the remnants of Hurricane Hermine, and we found ourselves scrambling a bit to come up with a new song for this month. 'Diamonds' began as a synth-heavy instrumental that Rob tracked at his Static Westhome studio earlier this summer. It had a great upbeat-yet-melancholy [...]

The Parish played host to Film School's fifth stop on their tour in support of the album Fission. Austin's TV Torso and Monahans were brought in to open. I was looking forward to this line up as a good match to the excellent sound and lighting at this venue. Follow the jump for more and fancy photos. I walked in on Monahans' set in mid-swing. They have a pleasing, familiar [...]

Brick by brick, Austin's Monahans are building their latest release 2010 Recordings by releasing a song a month on their website. The latest track from the band "I Break The Silence" surfaced today, and has a much different feel than anything you may have heard from them previously. Drums, almost tribal, dominate this track throughout with the guitars a bass playing support. Roberto Sanchez could be one of the more creative drummers you might see around town, as he doesn't use a snare, and this track showcases his unique style. On a side note, [...]

Wednesday, August 11, 2010 You have to give it up to Austin's own Monahans. After releasing the majestic Dim The Aurora (one of my favorite albums of 2009), the band has continued to churn out evocative and beautifully atmospheric tunes. Currently, they're in the middle of Monahans 2010 Recordings, which is a project to release one free song a month for 10 straight months (through the end of the year). The inspiration for the project was a road trip in the Fall [...]

If you haven't tuned in to the sounds of Austin's Monahans, you might be missing out on one of Austin's currently undiscovered great secrets. While the band's popularity quietly begins to bubble under the surface, they are introducing us to their newest recording, simply titled 2010 Recordings, one track at a time. The band began releasing a track a month in March and today finds us with track number 5 titled "We Tremble" with a short statement about the track from the band: "Building on last month's theme, the title "We Tremble" echoes the [...]

Taking an approach to releasing their music that most bands would shrug off, the Austin based Monahans are releasing a track a month from their most recent recording titled simply 2010 Recordings. And I should mention, that the tracks are free for download. The latest to surface from the Monahans camp is track #4 titled "A Memory Of God" . In addition to the free tracks being released, the band is also dropping video footage and various reference material as well. If you want to get in on this action, you might want [...]

One of Austin's great dirty little secrets of a band, Monahans, have been patiently releasing newly recorded material on their website , and just recently set loose track # 3 titled "Quell". The band will be releasing a track a month for the remainder of the year, so if you "dig" you might want to sign up for the band's email list. MP3> Monahans 'Quell'
Wednesday, January 20, 2010 Hi there music fans. I'm very excited to be part of the Side One: Track One staff. Not a whole lot to know about me other than I moved here from DC a few years back, and I'm a huge music dork. Actually, a more accurate description is probably just "dork" but that's beside the point. Be sure to look for ramblings about my favorite Austin bands and events every couple of weeks! But, before I start sharing my opinions on today's [...]
