Alright, so I am last like always. However, I do promise that this is it. Finally, the end of our 2007 retrospectives. After this one, we move forward and start talking about some music from 2008. Anyway, here is my Best of 2007 post. For my list, I decided to stick to the Baltimore/Washington region. Enjoy... 3 Best Regional EPs credit 3. Bellman Barker - Anise & Anisette Last [...]

The stately Baltimore duo Monarch ( read AGT's review of this Top Ten Album of 2007, If Children (Morphius)) to Wye Oak . Why the change? It appears there are about a dozen other Monarchs out there, including a drone-metal variety that has played Supersonic Festival in Birmingham, UK. As we mourn the passing of this name, we celebrate the prettier, more Maryland-centric Wye Oak. In celebration, download today's free MP3, "Warning", from If Children . Just click the link above. Something is going on in Baltimore. I can't quite put my finger on it, but something is up. Maybe it's all the 'BELIEVE' banners around town. Maybe the high crime rate has put the sense of urgency into everyone causing a massive surge of creative energy. Or not. Monarch is a duo straight out of Charm City that encorporates that creative energy previously mentioned. On their myspace they list their sound as Indie/Folk Rock/Experimental. The thing is...they're not quite folk rock. They're not quite experimental. I guess they're indie, [...]
I hope everyone's having as much fun with their friends and family this weekend as I am. LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends Le Tigre - Friendship Station Fred Viola - Friendship Is Tall Firs - Us And Our Friends Monarch - Family Glue

If you still have some energy and money left over from this grand shopping day, there are some solid shows going on around the area. In DC They Might Be Giants and Oppenheimer take on the 9:30 Club while Prefuse 73, Blank Blue, and School of Seven Bells electrify the Black Cat . In Baltimore you can check out some great indie rock down at the Ottobar with Jason Dove and the Magic Whip, Monarch, and Yukon. Enjoy! mp3: They Might Be Giants - The Mesopotamians [...]

We're still listening to the dope acoustic sets procured by Baltimore Taper a few weeks back; this time up to the plate we have Jenn and Andy from Monarch (bottom two on the teeball team photo above). The set consisted of a few from If Children , the debut of "Half a Double Man" and several other generally unplayed older songs. 1. Intro 2. Please Concrete (highly recommended) 3. I Don't Feel Young 4. Archaic Smile 5. On Top of Spaghetti 6. A Lawn To Mow 7. (false start) [...]
I'm going to start off this review by saying that I almost NEVER agree to receive a CD when a particular band emails me to tell me about their latest and greatest. Here is the reason why - unwanted obligation. I know I'm never obligated to write a review from a submission (well, tell that [...]
Our first Buttermore mixtape featured almost twenty top draw artists from Bmore proper including Dan Deacon, Small Sur, The Death Set, Videohippos, Beach House, Ponytail, Double Dagger, OCDJ...you get the picture, it was tighter than Red Foxx n ripple - but we didn't even scratch the surface son! So here's round two. Instead of spoiling you with 18 tracks we're taking a closer look at six Bmore bangers in the hopes you find a new favorite and catch some of these cats on the road (and we've already got plenty for a third pop). [...]
Rebel 'gainst the changing seasons, get outside and go banay-nays at the Current Canyon Festival! The kind folks at Current Gallery (a local artist-run gallery/studio/performance space) have amassed a wig scrambling lineup of local/national artists guaranteed to bring the am to the pm this weekend. Plus over 15 video artists/performances and a mad craft market (bring your own pigeon feathers). Everything goes down at 30 S. Calvert St. from 1-9pm Sat and Sun. Bmore duo Monarch (below) are undoubtedly one of the most anticipated acts of the weekend, more on them when we release [...]
The duo of Andy Stack and Jenn Wasner make up Monarch, making their mark on Baltimore's indie music scene in the year since their formation by layering catchy pop hooks with feedback to form a...
Uffie "First Love (Demo Version) - The sweetness that Uffie reveals on "First Love" doesn't contradict her party princess persona, or keep her from indulging in her tendency to contrast the cuteness of her voice with a put-on toughness, but it does make her seem more like a human being and less like a cartoon character. It's an incredibly sugary song, but it's also a bit tense and ambivalent, with a track that keeps trying to shrug off its most vulnerable moments by warping either the music or Uffie's voice. It might surprise some of you to learn, as little as we are currently posting here on MML, that quite a few messages end up on our MySpace page from new and upcoming bands. In the case of today's featured artist, there was a sense of new found priority to "give up the goods" at the earliest moment we could possibly manage. This time, the music we were fortunate enough to wrap our

Monarch Genre: Indie / Folk Rock / Experimental From: Baltimore, Maryland United States Despite their relative youth (but then most bands are youthful to this old devil) Andy Stack and Jenn Wasner are veterans of the Baltimore scene having been involved with Caleb Stine and the Brakemen [...]
Ah yes, the blurbs are back. Did you know there is some truly wonderful indie music from the Baltimore, MD and surrounding area? Here are just a few: 1. Warning - Monarch (Madder Rose meets Rilo Kiley, hint of Tengo) 2. Colored Lenses - The Seldon Plan (Posies and Nada Surf and Fanclub) 3. Heartbeats - Thrushes (Jesus [...]

Let's keep this simple. To me, this site has always been about supporting the local music scene. So I decided, that there is no better way to celebrate our first anniversary, than to make a mix of local music from the past year. I had so much fun, that I ended up making two discs. Some of these bands have come a long way in the last 12 months, some didn't even exist when we started and others are no more. That said, every song is from a band that claims (or claimed) the Baltimore/Washington metro area as [...]
surprisingly, baltimore based duo monarch (aka andy stack and jenn wasner) only started their musical collaboration last year. seemingly co-writing with ease, this multiple-instrumentalist young duo have the ability to make effortless gorgeous lush dreamy indie pop that evokes the good ol days when a wall of guitars could put you in a happy pensive mood. released independently, their debut full length album "if children" is a confident 11 track collection that showcases monarch's dense rocked out sound that they surprisingly recreate on their live shows. check out some highlights from the album and then take [...]
Due to their gorgeous songs, Monarch is one of my favorite Baltimore bands. They are a 2-piece comprised of multi-instrumentalists Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack, but their live shows don't sound like they only have 2 people on stage. I finally found a video that accurately portrays this. Notice Andy drumming and playing keys at the same time. Monarch - Family Glue [...]
