For this podcast I am joined by Ian, who is now a member of the Song, by Toad Records team, to go through a bit of a run-down of what's going to be happening on the label this year. We've got a couple of our more recent releases, like Rob St. John and Lil Daggers, as well as some of our confirmed and ready new albums for next year, by the likes of The Leg, Jesus H. Foxx and Yusuf Azak. I've also got a couple of tracks from bands we'll be releasing on a split [...]

The baubles in question would be twofold: Firstly, the Song, by Toad readers are awarding their own baubles for the year's musical endeavours, both in terms of anointing their song and their album of the year. And secondly, the very second I post this I am heading up into town to Kid Canaveral's Christmas Baubles, their second of what I assume will become an annual Christmas knees-up, this time hosted at Edinburgh's rather amazing Summerhall. This week on Song, by Toad I will be publishing my own top twenty albums of the year, and [...]
Rock n' Roll circa 2011 is becoming an increasingly predictable affair, so, whenever a band comes along refusing to fit the mold, it usually doesn't go unnoticed. Case in point, Boston's Mongrel. Formed with the belief that "punk" was more than a fashion statement, Mongrel was born in 2003 in Eastern Massachusetts, quickly leaving their [...]

Mudei [...]
My friends over on Social Blend have put together a great interview with Adam Savage from the Punk/Metal group Mongrel. Not only is the tunage pretty tasty (if you are of the punk/metal ilk) but you can hear first hand what its like to be knee deep in the harder end of the Indie music scene and get an understanding of what its like to have hard core fans so dedicated that they tattoo - yes tattoo - your name and lyrics on their body. Anyway, I just wanted to give you a heads up. Check out the interview [...]

... And so it commences. The beginning of the end of the first decade of the 21st century. I was way ahead of the times naming my albums of the decade way back in June (Coldplay's 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head' won if it's an inconvenience to click). 2009 itself has been a seemly year for records, perhaps not as inventive as 08's NY ascendancy or 01's, erm, NY ascendancy, but a decorous annum still and all. So, without extra ado, here are my albums of the last twelve months in order (sprinkled over the next [...]
Happy Arthur's Day – perhaps the greatest Irish marketing campaign of all time by the multinational owners of Guinness. Thousands of online campaigners have even signed a petition to turn September 24 into a national holiday, a Paddy's Day II. Cynicism aside, Guinness have lined up an impressive range of acts for intimate gigs around the capital's pubs and clubs, and Tripod is no exception. Like the rest, the Harcourt Street venue has been turned into a TV set for the evening, so Dublin can link up with simultaneous gigs in Lagos, Kuala Lumpar and New York for the toast [...]
Next Thursday, September 24th, will see a worldwide celebration of Arthur's Day – a musical event to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the lease at St James's Gate Brewery. Although there are gigs happening across the globe (including New York, Lagos,Yaoundé and Asia), it's fitting that Dublin should be hosting the biggest party of all. Kicking off at 17:59 local time, the capital in four venues – Tripod ( Calvin Harris, Soul II Soul ), Whelans ( David Gray, The Enemy, Lisa Hannigan ), Vicar Street ( Sugababes, Razorlight , Reverend & the Makers ) [...]
Guinness announced an incredible line-up of artists for Dublin's Arthur's Day 250th anniversary celebrations on September 24, 2009, including Tom Jones, Sugababes, David Gray, The Kooks, Razorlight, David Holmes, Mystery Jets and Noah And The Whale, who (along with The Chapters) played a special acoustic gig in Oliver St John Gogarty's in Dublin's Temple Bar to annouce the line-up. In total, over 60 artists will be performing in Dublin and around the world, including New York,Lagos, Yaoundé and Asia. The celebrations begin in Dublin at 17:59 local time, with a global toast to Arthur Guinness to [...]
Sorry for the lack of post yesterday, I've been mad sick. Although I do have a funny story involving playing kickball and trash talking this big dude... who I later learned plays for the Philadelphia Eagles.... anyways...So on Saturday, after the Bomb The Music Industry show, I knew FEAR was playing at the Trocadero, but when I tried to buy tickets it was sold out. It was a 21+ show, and they
John McClure from Reverend & The Makers has become part of a supergroup called Mongrel. This supergroup has past and present members of Arctic Monkeys in it. How did all this pass me by? Even more importantly how did the fact that they gave their album away free with The Independant pass me by? I found all this out when I was looking at Reverend & The Makers forum, not only that but John pointed readers to look up the video The Revolution Will Not Be Televised. I suggest you abandon your [...]

Ryan (StopMe): As I type these words, I can barely contain my excitement as I watch a far-too-slow torrent of the last ever episode of Battlestar Galactica download after it aired on US telly last night. If you're in similar agony then here are ten more fantastic tunes to sooth the passing of the next couple of hours: Bat For Lashes' 'Sleep Alone' has organic Guitars, industrial humming and shiny Synths for a 'Kate Bush covering The Velvet Underground with the Pet Shop Boys producing' kinda sound. It's from Natasha [...]

The Last Skeptic just sent us this exclusive new version of a track from the super group Mongrel . It's part of a remix album he's currently putting together that will hopefully be dropping later on in the year. Skeptic 's also re-scheduled his Cardiff show with Kashmere and Verb T that fell victim to last months snow chaos. They will now be playing at The Globe on Saturday 25th [...]

Mongrel's 'Better than Heavy' made history today as it was the first debut album to be given away free by a national newspaper . I picked up a copy and whilst I browsed news of Mandelson's green custard attack and the like my ears were entertained by the sounds of Mongrel . At 11 tracks and 40 minutes long it's not a daunting listen although opener 'Barcode' really throws the listener in at the deep end with it's female raps (courtesy of Pariz1 and Tor Cesay), hectic instrumentation and conspiracy theory message. 'Lies' continues with the [...]
You might have heard the buzz about Mongrel giving their debut album away free with The Independent (a fine newspaper, and mine of choice) this past Saturday. The band is the latest outfit from outspoken and rather tall Sheffield legend John McClure who's previously voiced his poetic lyrics over past outfits Judan Suki, 1984, and most recently, Reverend & The Makers . When I interviewed him at the Lincoln stop on his last tour I was struck by his immense sense of conviction and an all encompassing desire to sort almost all the [...]

This Saturday, Mongrel, the supergroup consisting of rapper Lowkey and members of the Arctic Monkeys, Babyshambles and Reverend and the Makers, will be making history and giving away their debut album, 'Better Than Heavy', for free with The Independent newspaper. I, for one, will be jumping at this offer of free and very decent music. I'm a big fan of Lowkey (especially his debut album 'Dear Listener') and everything I've heard from the group so far is top notch. As well [...]

usually German radio is as bad as German rock bands. We can't wait: Internet radio in all cars = death of shitty corporate radio stations. Support good radio whenever you can! (don't support Pirate Bay because they make millions on advertising. Liars!) mms://85.214.45.87:80/fritz.mo ntag.1 Title/ Band/ Album Hit from the morning sun (Ocelot Remix Radio Edit) / Mongrel / Better than heavy Day'n'nite (Day and night) [...]
New music from Lowkey's newest, set to blow project: Mongrel. The band, if you don't know, consists of Jon McClure and Joe Moskow (Reverend and The Makers) Lowkey, Andy Nicholson (Ex Arctic Monkeys Bassist), Matt Helders (Arctic Monkeys Drummer), Drew McConnell (Babyshambles Guitarist) and Jagz Kooner (proflific UK producer). Here are three pretty different takes on their track 'Hit From The Morning Sun': Hit From The Morning Sun - Hit From The Morning Dub (My favourite and the most [...]
