Photos and words by Debi Del Grande Remember when Chuck D and co. held a free show on skid row last January to raise awareness of the homeless crisis down there? Not many do. There wasn't enough media attention given, so most people didn't even know about it. As an artist always giving back to the community, Chuck D put together the Hip Hop Gods Tour, bringing a solid group of classic rap artists that not only get the crowd grooving, but ones that are making a difference. One after another, X-Clan, [...]

As if I didn't have enough problems. It was already tough growing up chubby, black and with a funny West Indian accent in redneck country in the middle of Florida. Why did I have to be saddled with such a strange last name, too? Though I've since come to terms with it, learned to love it even, I wasn't always so thrilled with my surname. At one point, it was at the top of my list of things I'd change about myself given the opportunity. Doesn't Jeremy Jones have a nice ring? I often wondered. Alliteration rules! [...]
WATCH: De La Soul's classic 'Buddy' video (which features The Native Tongues) For those of you who have grown up in the 90s (or anyone that appreciates that era in music), this event is definitely for YOU. I'm pretty sure that you guys at home are definitely familiar with the members of the Native Tongues , with J Dilla (RIP) being one of the newer members of the tribe. Anyways, this event will be taking place at SOB's in New York, and the tickets are currently $20. Guest DJ of [...]
DMV-area sibling trio Gods'Illa brought a refreshing dose of both "Grown N' Sexy" cool and When Hip Hop Was Great feel-good on the original "You Don't Have To Be A Star", a cut from their Erykah Badu-hosted CPR BlendTape that married head-nod-approved, soulful boom-bap (based around a sample of Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr.'s Grammy-winning '76 No. 1 of the same name ) and the sweet, fluttery vocals of singer Maimouna Youssef with mature lyrical spins on the beginning's, middle's and end's of adult relationships that were far more relatable [...]
I think a late pass should be utilize since this was released back in July. Still with this line up not listening isn't an option. Gods'illa has been making plenty of noise this year, i'm sure 2012 is looking bright for them. Cmon how many artist can actually say Erykah Badu hosted their mixtape???? Bonus: Gods'illa: CPR BlendTape hosted by DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown aka Erykah Badu
1990 was indeed a fantastic year for Monie Love’s chart friendly tune ‘It’s A Shame.’ As was the need with high tops, wearing pin badges on your denim jacket and having holes in your jean thighs + knee parts too.. 2011 harks a soon to be announced tidal wave of nineties inspired EDM future-hits and reminiscent creative-wonders to shirk a great big grin at, and have a full-on dance too. Eddie Hoey from out of “thee land of me ol’ pirates” – me thinks, induces a clever bit of housey-clap-awe and pleases the [...]
Holla'd at the homie, Khaliyl (aka Mr. Man from Da Bush Babees ) and he put me up on this new project he's been working on. OSM:: Monie Love – It’s a Shame (My Sister)
Hey there! You should read this original post on the hill by going here: OSM:: Monie Love - It's a Shame (My Sister) Old School Mondays makes a return appearance with this Monie Love classic for a couple reasons. I heard it twice randomly in a couple days over the weekend, once in a coffee shop and once via the shuffle here at my house. As anyone who has heard it knows it's a groovy, amazingly catchy tune, with Monie's effortless flow exhorting her sisters to kick the trifflin' dudes to the curb. What actually [...]

’90s One-Hit Wonders That Are Worth Revisiting
It seems that in the last couple of years, more and more bands from the 1990s are coming back, either taking the reunion route like Pavement, Chavez, the long-inactive Superchunk, and even (God help us all) Soundgarden, or releasing new material long after their last memorable hit. Nada Surf, which you probably know from their 1996 summer anthem "Popular," have actually built a fairly successful indie career over the past decade and released a new album this week, The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy . Their resurgence got us thinking about other '90s one-hit wonders whose music is [...]

Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels Of A Tribe Called Quest I would say with much certitude that A Tribe Called Quest are the most influential, groundbreaking Hip Hop group the game has ever seen and it seems actor Michael Rappaport agrees wit that statement aswell. ALBUM REVIEW: Tiff The Gift – Good, Calm, Chill
Let's face it you will be hard pressed to find another artform or genre of music as homophobic and or sexist as hip hop. We have all heard the lyrics, dissing women and calling them all sorts of names under the sun, and yet we still listen. Fact; hip hop is young, abrasive, rebellious and [...]
