So far, 2009 has been loaded with music that's pretty freaking awesome. However, I can't say the same for album covers. In that department, it feels like 2009 has given up all hope. Sure, in terms of how music sounds, cover art is pretty irrelevant, but there's nothing worse than being reminded of an eyesore every time a song you love comes on. Here are a few LPs that have been making love to my ears and offending my eyes--and don't worry about not understanding the artistic critiques in this post, because they're being written by someone who [...]

judging from their intense, blistering gig here last year, i expected mono 's new album to follow that deafening path of no return. i could just imagine how it would have sounded: pretty much like their previous efforts, but louder and more hazardous, and because they do this so well, i wouldn't complain even if it wasn't the most original sounding record. i guess that's just a long, convoluted way of introducing how mono's new album hymn to the immortal wind really is a departure of sorts. yes, the moments of loudness are still delivered [...]

Post-rock has gotten to a point where just about anyone thinks they can try doing it. The sad part is a lot of bands aren't doing it well. Playing slow and stepping on delay pedals doesn't turn a band's music into post-rock. Like anything that's good, it requires more effort and passion than that—nice try, though. The Japanese band Mono has just released their fifth studio album, Hymn to the Immortal Wind , and they're about to mark their 10th year as a band, too. Mono's latest albums make their early work seem modest by comparison, and [...]

Snowglobe is a rather amorphous, unwieldy group of artists who share a love for all things honest, poppy, and psychedelic. All members to date hail from Memphis, TN, but the music and idea of Snowglobe has its origins in Athens, GA. The group played many of it's first shows with the artists of the elephant 6 collective, including Of Montreal and Olivia Tremor Control. They have since returned home, and today Snowglobe strives to continue the age old Memphis tradition of playing honest music for the right reasons. Snowglobe will be featured in the upcoming [...]

Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele - The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele Dent May reminds me of my friends from the math & computer club at my high school back in the mid-'90s. Amidst our treasured BBS and equations, we used to dream that one day the nerds would take over, and our overworked intellects and idiosyncratic tastes would be valued instead of spit upon--that someday, being nerdy might even be considered "cool." Dent [...]

Weds 25th March - The Croft Bristol The support act was a pleasure, Jesu -like swollen bass and harmonic wash, the vocals drifting through that swaying forest of sonic purr and fuzz - cool and sophisticated stuff with slight doomic leanings...slow burners of the highest order. The live elements seamlessly blending with the backing tape of percussive explosion, ambient texture and slivers of foreign dialogue. The lead singer sharing an un-canny likeness to Harry [...]

Japanese post-rock instruMENTALISTS, Mono hit the UK recently and Gary Wolstenholme was just about close enough to their stacks of guitar pedals to take a few photos. Did you know that Fightstar frontman, Charlie Simpson is a massive, massive Mono fan? That's where the title of the song 'Mono' from their first album, Grand Unification came from. Earlier today Justin shared with you some new releases from this week that he was excited about, and now I'm gonna draw your attention to a couple more that I can't believe he didn't bother mentioning. The first of which was my most anticipated album of the year. The Decemberists Hazards of Love (Capitol) These guys just keep getting better and better. I found it very obvious that this project began as the score for a broadway play. Even if he's never able to [...]
