The debut solo album by the lead singer of a popular band can be a mixed bag of failed experiments and half-assed leftovers that weren't good enough for the artist's main project. For every breakout artist like Peter Gabriel there's a dozen like Mick Jagger , whose solo career pales in comparison to his band's legendary output. In the case of My Morning Jacket's Jim James , he finds himself in an interesting position. As his band's albums have become more bombastic, James [...]

Jim James was the latest subject to a Reddit inquest, as inquiring minds hurled questions at the singer during a candid Ask Me Anything earlier today. During the Q&A, James revealed several important tidbits about conditioning his hair and what exactly goes into a peanut butter surprise, but also talked shop about his various musical endeavors. For instance, James will be at Bonnaroo 2013 with a "new band" to perform his solo album, My Morning Jacket are hitting the studio this year, and Monsters of Folk already have five songs in [...]
Portland indie hero and singer-songwriter M. Ward will make his first visit to India this March, to support the multiple Grammy award-winning songstress Norah Jones on her tour of the country. In addition to playing A Summer's Day festival in Mumbai on March 3, Ward will play shows in New Delhi on March 5, and Bangalore on March 8. Apart from being a solo musician with eight full-length albums to his credit (most recently, 20122s critically-acclaimed A Wasteland Companion ), Ward is also one half of indie pop and folk duo She & Him [...]

It's hard to believe that Conor Oberst is only 32. It seems like the man has been around forever. Between his work as a solo artist, in Bright Eyes, in Desaparecidos or in the super band Monsters of Folk, it is safe to say that Conor Oberst has been one of the most prolific songwriters in the past decade. Perhaps best known for his work in Bright Eyes, Conor has quietly released a few solo albums as well. Considering he has not released anything under the "Conor Oberst" brand in a few years, his most recent tour would [...]

Zach Hollowell Who: Conor Oberst What: Bright Eyes and Desaparecidos frontman, one-quarter of Monsters Of Folk, solo artist, Saddle Creek impressario, and perennial cover star of Non-Threatening Boys Magazine . You know who he is. Why: Though he's performing under his own name, he hasn't released a solo record since 20092s Outer South , which was technically credited to him and the Mystic Valley Band. Prior set lists indicate this is more a revue of his entire prodigious career - [...]
As the winter nears I’ve prepared myself with a lineup of concerts to help the cold weather pass. Among these upcoming shows there includes a performer whom I haven’t missed once in 7 years: Conor Oberst. Partaking in several projects including Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, Monsters of Folk, Desaparacidos, and most famously Bright Eyes, Oberst’s repertoire is vast and filled with an array of pleasing music to suit many tastes. Having been lucky enough to see Bright Eyes perform several times, I am lined up to see Conor Oberst yet again at my favourite venue, Massey Hall, [...]

Among the albums I am extremely excited about this fall, Will Johnson's "Scorpion" is near the top of that list. Johnson, who is known best as the front man of Texas indie rockers Centro-matic and for his work in Monsters of Folk and New Multitudes has released the first single to his upcoming solo album, titled "You Will Be Here, Mine". Like a lot of his work, the single is quite chill and somewhat pensive but always creates a mood and paints a picture that sticks with you after the three minutes are long gone. Check out the tune below. [...]

This weekend the granddaddy of all music fests – the Newport Folk Festival – will get under way with three days of roots, folk, funk, soul and rock or what can basically be defined as quintessential American music. For the 2012 installment the fest has grown in size with the addition of a fourth stage, and will "unofficially" open on Friday night at the historic Fort Adams State Park with a fantastic triple-bill that features Wilco, Blitzen Trapper and Megafaun. The fest, which will once again be streamed live on NPR featuring both audio and video, [...]

The Portland songwriter made a long overdue stop in San Diego // Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.
I never considered self-indulgence a bad thing. Many critics always keep their high-strung arguments ever so close to their heart on the subject, but the fuss over this quality feels much too superfluous. Why must we strive to be better than our primal instincts? If artists have a romantic relationship with a style of music, let them be, dammit. There’s not much satisfaction to come out of sticking our noses up high because a musician indulges in a common sonic quality, they want us to indulge too. Lets keep in touch with those emotions, beloved indie rockers. [...]
The day after the release of his seventh album, A Wasteland Companion, M. Ward played a sold-out show in San Francisco Wednesday night.
Filed under: Q + A Press Here M. Ward has been kicking around the indie music scene for the past several years in a largely collaborative role. Though he has six solo albums to his name, in the last three years he has released two albums as one half of the twee-pop duo She and Him and one album as one fifth of the rootsy supergroup Monsters of Folk . [...]

A few days ago, Annie Mac of BBC released a new Zeds Dead remix of a great The Roots song. The song has a very calm feel about it and is absent of any big drop which is rather refreshing. It still embodies Zeds Dead crunchy wobbles, but on a much more subdued tone. This song is some great music if you're just waking up and having a lazy day or if you're winding down from a long day. Regardless, I highly recommend picking this up FREE at Annie Mac's SoundCloud page! Zeds Dead: Facebook [...]

This is a banger. Dear God 2.0 by The Roots ft Monsters of Folk remixed by Zeds Dead. Enjoy. via

DC and Hooks aka Canadian powerhouse Zeds Dead are back with another eery remix to throw in your DJ sets and iPods. This time they take on soulful vocals by Conor Oberst of the brand new supergroup Monsters of Folk . Although the original track featured The Roots , the ZD version omits the raps and goes strait for the ghostly vibe. As usual they bring their grimy, shifting bass rifts and crispy beats to round out the track and give it their stamp of approval. Although it was a bit too short to really sink [...]
First up today I've got a sick video recap of Zeds Dead's show in Calgary, Canada. The video was done by Cinesthetics. It features a sick new track from Zeds Dead featuring Omar LinX "No Prayers". It's got the funky unique Zeds Dead flavor that I love. Great video work as usual from Steve at Cinesthetics. Zeds Dead ft. Omar LinX - No Prayers Preview As a bonus, they shot me over a new remix that Annie Mac debuted this morning. It's got a mellow vibe [...]

Zeds Dead just embarked on an epic 70 date Tour across Canada & the US. The duo will be accompanied by Omar Linx and MPC legend AraabMuzik along with a few other opening acts. Let me assure you that tickets will indeed go fast as these Vacay Legends tend to orchestrate lethal Vacay conditions. Oh btw, there will be an LED setup thats designed by the same ppl behind Skrillex's & Deadmau52s lightshow. Take this supplement below to prep your body and let me your mind slip away to magically place while watching this: [...]
Toronto's finest, Zeds Dead, dropped this today for free via Annie Mac's soundcloud. The original Roots track is one of my favorites so I can't resist a little dub treatment by some of the best in the game. FREE MUSIC MONDAY: The Roots ft.
