The basement of Psychic School is, at least for the time being, off limits. After an unusually rowdy weeknight concert for the Teenage Moods, the house's lower level is a mess. There are hol...

Yuck Live Review: Smith Westerns, Yuck, Moon Rings February 1, 2011, Drunken Unicorn, Atlanta by Emily Hogan I can probably count on one hand the number of bands I'd see more than once in a 48-hour period. Chicago-based Smith Westerns and British rockers Yuck fit into that category. And I'd do it all over again in a heart beat. I saw them in Athens, GA at the 40 Watt on Monday, January 31. It was just the warm up for the Atlanta show the following [...]

Congrats to the Packers winning the Super Bowl!!! I know a lot was riding on it, even if I really don't watch football and didn't get to watch the game since I was working. But here is a little post to say, a job well done!!! Green & Yellow Lil' Wayne - Green & Yellow Snowblink - Green to Gone Yellow Sunshine - Yellow Sunshine The Jayhawks - Tomorrow the Green Grass Aphex Twin - Yellow Calx [...]
If I could have my rock one way (besides Nirvana of course) today I'd say I'd like it the Mood Rings way. This Atlanta wonder is melodic, but not too melodic. Large and soaring, but not... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

The opening track on Sweater Weather Forever , the debut four-song EP from Atlanta psych-pop outfit, Mood Rings , unfurls like an early '60s, David Lynch-inspired night at the prom. It's gauzy and surreal, but there is an wide-eyed romanticism that lends the song—aptly-titled "Year of Dreams"—a feeling of incorruptible innocence. The familiar Motown sweep of the guitars, steeped in so much echo-y reverb, only further enhances the lingering atmosphere of nostalgia and dreamy abstraction that the song imbues. It's a solid piece of pop craftsmanship for sure, but one has to wonder if it would seem quite [...]
Atlanta's Mood Rings is all set to drop their new EP Sweater Weather Forever, aptly titled for this dismal northeastern weather we've been getting, far from what Mood Rings is use to in Atlanta. There's been much buzz around these guys since working with brokenheartboy loveth Washed Out's producer Phil Jones. A lot of that [...]
After our Best of 2010 album list was completed, we had every intention of highlighting our favorite EPs from last year as well. With Dave having a new addition to his family on the first of the year, however, we never got around to putting that list together. I can assure you that such a...

Mood Rings' music sounds much like the above band photo appears: a little hazy and blurred out, obscured yet made somehow distinctive by the light of the sun. It's not exactly surf-inflected but there is an undeniable ocean and sand quality to their music, a sort of Beach Boys by way of Sonic Youth vibe that manages to pair classic sunny sixties pop harmonies with hypnotic shoegaze guitars. I've heard a lot of music in this young 2011, but nothing quite as intoxicating as "Indian Hills." The way those ringing guitars spin around and stumble [...]

Moodrings Three two-noon-shifts-in-a-row-for-t his-cat-means-less-sitting-in- front-of-the-computer-hating-h imself reasons to get up get up get up and be a player tonight at the old Empty Bottle ... 1. Hotlanta's Moodrings grace the Bottle's stage tonight for the very first time. So, there's that. There's also their pretty sweet shoegaze psychedelia. That seems to be a thing right now but of recent modern "things" it is one I can really embrace. Who doesn't like swirling strumming guitars slowly twisting and turning? Welp, sounds like Moodrings do this kind of thing rather well. Won't you join me [...]

Back in early 2000, when my first encounter with the term 'post-rock' happened, I didn't realize how you can make post something, that literally happens in the here and now. So I looked it up and discovered that the press calls an album like Ecim by Cul De Sac - post rock - the year, 1989. It still wasn't clear to me. Then I first heard Godspeed You! Black Emperor and started to investigate almost everything Constellation Records [...]

strange how random threads stretch out across time and continents. got an email from this rather fetching label (comics and epic noise you say? my kinda place) and during my columbo-esque investigation realised i already owned one of their records. the alan sparhawk album since you ask. which somehow made it's way to avalanche records, glasgow, scotland and eventually disappeared into the ungodly piles of stuff i hoard like some music compulsive shut-in. anyways they have a bunch of new stuff (and a tonne of old too) and i'm gonna do a quick pimp of some of the choicest cuts, [...]

Back from under the studio rock, Mýa returns. On first listen, the song is not so bad. It's definitely better than her previous singles from Moodring or Liberation . The new album's out the same day as Britney's. It's called Sugar & Spice . Notice the fierce metal cage dress in the video.
