There are so many records I didn't spend enough time with, and even more I never got around to. I'm sure I'm missing some good ones, but so often this year I found myself in a music tunnel vision of sorts where after keeping up with clients' and friends' records, I only wanted to come home and listen to old familiar things on the turntable. The Byrds, The Kinks, Kate Bush, and Kraftwerk made comforting re-appearances throughout 2012. Tell me what I missed out on, and I'll check it out. [...]

Today I present to you the first in a series of posts covering our top 50 albums of 2012. These lists take a long time to compile, so, to save my sanity, I've split it into a five-part countdown, beginning with 50 through 41. As these things go, it's all subjective - best-of lists are compiled based on what we feel at this particular moment in time. Case in point: At this time last year, my top three albums were: 3. Dream Diary by Jeremy Jay, 2. Music Sounds Better With You [...]

Moon Duo and Fugazi at Uganda #israel #vinyl #LPs #moonduo #fugazi

Let's be frank: I've been a shitty music reviewer this year. Bogged down with the basic realities of life I've spent far too little time chasing the errant strands of my musical obsessions. I relied on unreliable sources and found myself, more often than not, half-assedly listening to popular radio. Simply put, this isn't my most complete list. Yes, this is five albums that I've loved this year. Five albums that have seen more time on my record player than any other. Five albums that when I look back on 2012 will automatically suck me back in to [...]

Well the end of 2012 is drawing to a close and we've run down the albums that got the most play around RSTB this year. To avoid the list just being a mass of Ty Segall albums Twins (a personal fave of the bunch) takes the place on the list but the other two would have easily made the list, especially the collab with White Fence which got plenty of play around here as well. Some really great releases this year and a banner year for both Drag City and Sacred Bones with some heavy inclusions in our list. [...]
MOON DUO, LIFE COACH, WHITE RAINBOW, DJ E*ROCK ( Holocene , 1001 SE Morrison) Read our article on Moon Duo . THE CAVE SINGERS, POOR MOON, ROSE WINDOWS ( Doug Fir , 830 E Burnside) "Have to Pretend," the brand-new song from the Cave Singers—from their upcoming album Naomi (due out on Jagjaguwar in March)—continues their stream of taking familiar, even threadbare folk and rock elements and coming up with something fresh. With an odd, [...]

December starts off with a full week of fantastic new shows to tell you about. Monday sets the bar high for one of our favorites bands - Simian Mobile Disco at Neumos. On Thursday, Neumo's hosts another must see show with Charles Bradley and The Mehanan Street Band , and you can also check out John Cale and Cass McCombs at Showbox at the Market. On Friday, make sure you don't miss Allen Stone and Lemolo at Paramount Theatre. You can also go support a great cause [...]

By Kenny McMurtrie November 12, 2012 I've no recollection of what occupied the Broadcast site previously but as newer live venues in Glasgow go its basement space is a good sized & welcome addition. For those of us getting on in years it bears a close resemblance to Edinburgh’s The Venue , replete with centrally placed girder for the more adventurous stage diver to monkey crawl along. For a psych/krautrock show there was also a distinct lack of long-haired blokes, albeit age & balding rather than fashion accounted for a [...]

Although they've only been around for five years, Sacred Bones have become one of indie's most prolific record labels with ties to such artists as Zola Jesus , Moon Duo , Psychic Ills , and more recent newcomers such as Cult of Youth and [...]
Though they've since relocated to Portland, Moon Duo's Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada recorded the bulk of their pummeling new Circles LP in Blue River, Colorado, a tiny mountain town where they holed up last ... read more

Words by Brendan All Hallow's Eve is upon us! Wednesday is the day of celebration, the dance of the dead. There's no need for a suave/slutty costume; there's no need for candy; there's no need for jack-o'-lanterns and cobwebs and tombstones. All you need are some friends, some pumpkin beers, and some good fucking music. That's where we come in. Here's a mixtape of Halloweeny tunes for you to play at your party. Some of these bands are as old as the hills, and some I quite literally just heard about [...]

Live, Moon Duo are a full spectrum assault on the senses, disorientating and confusing with their droning minimalism and their chiaroscuro light show. On record, they produce more digestible but no less mesmerising pop drones. Opener ‘Sleepwalker’ is a case in point: droney rhythms begin pulsing organically, punctuated by flashes of effects-laden guitar, until the whole thing builds to a lush, melodic chorus. Ripley Johnson and Sanae Johnson again owe an aural debt to the Velvet Underground and Suicide, which is most obvious on the quickstepping glam rocker ‘Fast Action’. [...]
San Francisco’s Moon Duo – Ripley Johnson (of Wooden Shjips) and Sanae Yamada – are out with their third full-length, Circles . Their latest brings more of the same hypnotic guitar laden, heavy synth drone rock found on previous release Mazes , with Johnson on guitar and vocals and Yamada on keys. Standouts among the nine tracks include opener “Sleepwalker”, “Dance Pt 3”, and eight minute closer “Rolling Out.” Moon Duo continue to perform great droning psych rock, solidifying themselves as a band to watch. – Written by SMarx [...]

This post is going to be huge with good reason. The artists were very photogenic on a gorgeous day. The lawn held togehter for the most part despite the rain and spirits were high going into day three with beautiful blue skies and a dry breeze. Here is the rundown for Sunday pics: Stars , Gary Clark Jr. , Polica , Two Door Cinema Club , Die Antwoord , Willis Earl Beal and Crystal Castles . I took plenty of Zef Side shots, have a quick cameo from Moon [...]
