Conceived and recorded as a sort of therapy to help cope with adjusting to life post-college, an insuing break-up and geographic isolation Mikal Cronin steps momentarily away from the rhythm section of Orange County surf-punk bashers The Moonhearts with his debut solo LP. Fans can take heart, this isn't a "vanity project" or half-baked endeavor - Mikal's solo debut is fully realized, cohesive

Mikal Cronin - "Get Along" Mikal Cronin - "Apathy" Mikal Cronin - of Moonhearts and Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin - is stepping out on his own later this year with a solo psych-pop LP on Trouble in Mind Records . The self-titled album comes out September 20th, just around the beginning of Cronin's tour with Ty Segall . Prior to those dates, he'll be performing at the Hemlock Tavern on Sunday, August 28th (9pm, $7). [...]

Words by Rick Moslen In my mind, 2010 will go down as the year where every other music fan pretended that Kanye West 's My Dark Twisted Fantasy was their favorite album of the year. I know—the album wasn't bad, but saying it was the best of the year is such a kick in the nuts to musicians who receive little recognition but have actual soul behind their music. I'm not calling Moonhearts ' self-titled album THE best of 2010, but it most-definitely deserves high recognition. Their likeable (and surfable!) music may [...]

Tweet Live This Month: March 2011 (Episode 244) In Live This Month , we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. As South by Southwest approaches later in March, bands are hitting the road, crisscrossing the US before converging on Austin. What this means for Bay Area music fans is a ton of buzz-backed touring bands stopping in SF, and equally promising locals playing some final shows [...]

Tweet San Diego punk label Volar Records just released a 200-cassette run of a tribute to 70s power-pop hitmakers Paul Collins, Peter Case and Jack Lee. The trio started out in San Francisco as The Nerves before branching into other projects (The Beat, The Plimsouls); they were also behind "When You Find Out" and that one song "Hanging on the Telephone." Several contributors to Under the Covers Vol. 2 come out of the San Francisco garage-pop scene: Grass Widow , Hunx & [...]
Having written my top 10 list quite a while back (I'm not one of those who listens to a million albums I didn't get to or like, actually remembers the ones I liked throughout the year) it was inevitable that I missed out on approx. 10 great records that should have made my list, and [...]
I can't believe it's time again for me to say who I think is going to blow up next year. I'd like to clarify that nobody has asked for my input on this, but I feel that these bands are going to either blow up or achieve mild success that to me is the equivalent [...]
I love doing year end roundup coverage and I'm still waiting to put up the bands to watch list, so I thought we'd highlight some of the great bands we discovered over the past year. Some of them made our 2011 bands to watch list, some of them didn't, some of them aren't even NEW [...]

The Moonhearts are a California garage-surf trio of drummer Charlie Mootheart and guitarist Roland Cosio, with Mikal Cronin on vocals and bass. Formerly known as Charlie and the Moonhearts, the band recorded their debut full-length (with the assistance of Ty Segall) on an old 7-track tape machine, soaking it in their guitar-driven trash pop to glorious effect. The self-titled album is full of loud, distorted, revved-up garage rock party jams, recommended if you like Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, Woven Bones, and a nice kick in the pants. Pick it up now via Tic Tac Totally . [...]
Back in the golden age of rock 'n' roll, bands would tack on a frontman's name after they found success. The Crickets became Buddy Holly and The Crickets. The Supremes became Diana Ross and The Supremes. The Time is immortally branded Morris Day and The Time. The Stooges? Iggy & The Stooges. The Pussycats became Josie & The Pussycats (and, eventually, The Pussycat Dolls). The Moonhearts have reversed that tide, changing from Charlie & The Moonhearts to, simply, The Moonhearts. But don't worry, Charlie: Even though you're the drummer and [...]

Moonhearts Moonhearts (2010, Tic Tac Totally!) RIYL = Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, Woven Bones Oh bliss! Look at my fried & scrambled brains, all hissing and popping, steaming, served up on a dirty diner's plate. Thank you Moonhearts, oh thank you thank you! I know it wasn't much of a week or so ago when I was discussing the Moonhearts (formally Charlie and the Moonhearts) and their garage rock superiority with the 2008 tape/CD, Thunderbeast . Well, they've dropped Charlie, though I hope not literally. Even if they did, this self titled [...]
Before last week, I had never heard of the Californian trio Moonhearts which until recently went under the a little less catchy name Charlie and the Moonhearts, but thanks to constant raving by Kiss Kiss Fantastic 's Rachel Levy I more or less randomly gave it a listen and was almost blown away by this fine blend of almost classic Golden State surf pop and noisier garage elements, with just the right amount of lo-fi fuzziness. Simple yet elaborate upbeat splendour made for open window cruises to your nearest beach. It's summer, folks. Moonhearts' debut [...]

Charlie & the Moonhearts Thunderbeast (2008, Telephone Explosion) RIYL = The Von Bondies, Smith Westerns, Women Alright, this isn't a 2009 release, but I wrote for the same reason last year and never posted it, so I thought I'd sneak it in: The band name "Moonhearts" kinda sounds like the name of a pack horses that Rainbow Bright and her cohorts would ride; however, in context of Charlie, the apparent leader of this troupe, Moonhearts are actually hardened, gritty rock purveyors of the extremely dirty variety. And heaven knows, [...]
