Morton Subotnick Morton Subotnick (born April 14, 1933 in Los Angeles, California) is an American composer of electronic music, best known for his Silver Apples of the Moon, the first electronic work commissioned by a record company, Nonesuch... Early electronic music was made using wave generators and tape-manipulated sounds. Subotnick was among the first composers to work with electronic instrument designer Don Buchla. Buchla's modular voltage-controlled synthesizer, which he called the Electric Music Box and which was constructed partly based on suggestions by Subotnick and Sender, was both [...]

With festivals every single weekend, it's hard to imagine that any one could be that different from the rest. But if nothing else, Chicago's two-year old Neon Marshmallow Festival proves that assumption so very wrong. The noise/drone/electronic/general ly avant-garde acts that pummeled the crowd for three nights won't be filling out even the earliest of slots at Coachella or Lollapalooza, and the fans who filed into work Monday morning with damaged ear drums and huge grins on their faces wouldn't want it any other way. Neon Marshmallow is, in a word, weird. In two words, delightfully weird. [...]

Mi Ami - "Hard Up" MP3/download Hey, remember Black Eyes? Yeah, they were awesome, though I suspect most folks in the indie community preTENDed to like them because they were on Dischord ... the Black Eyes sound was just too abrasive for your average The Rapture fan; I was one of maybe two DJs that [...]

Morton Subotnik: Silver Apples of the Moon, part 1 [ purchase ] This piece defines the beginning of an evolution that I'm coming out the other end of now. I can see where it has led; I can see sort of an ending point. I can also see what made it fairly popular at the time it came out in relation to the pop world and the world in general. It sort of defined an approach to electronics that found its [...]

Morton Subotnick, Touch (Columbia 1969) Morton Subotnick is best known for Silver Apples of the Moon , which used the same type of early synthesizer (the Buchla Electronic Music System ). Touch was recorded in Quad (!), although of course I ripped it in stereo ... this is only a small part of the album-length piece, but the section about two minutes into this clip makes my eyes start to bug and sparks shoot out of my ears. Lots of his recordings are available on CD or LP [...]
