No Modest Bear premiered a newly recorded version of an older unreleased track from dream-pop troupe Moscow Olympics today. It falls right into place with their previous material and is highly recommended for fans of The Radio Dept., Slowdive and Sarah Records aficionados. There's no update on a follow-up to 2008's gorgeous Cut the World full-length, but you can order a newer pressing of that record on CD over at Japanese imprint Happy Prince . [...]
NMB just premiered this ultrawarm gazewave track by Moscow Olympics who come from the Philippines and sound like The Radio Dept but a Radio Dept that wears their love of New Order more on their sleeves. Either way, keeping the avenues open, a reworking of an MO song from a year ago, is definitely vibe-ready and is a sweet look into the sound of the four-piece's second album, on schedule at Fraction Discs .
I was talking with a buddy recently about how The Radio Dept. have finally gotten some widespread critical acclaim and attention, mostly due to the fact that there are a lot of newer and more popular indie buzz bands that are borrowing from the same palette (Wild Nothing, Minks, The Depreciation Guild) and sound exactly like what The Radio Dept. were doing on Lesser Matters back in 2003. Whatever it takes, right? Philippine dream-pop act Moscow Olympics also share common musical roots with the Swedish trio only they embrace more of the [...]
The biweekly NFOP Radio Show gets a little reboot this week. From today, it's not called "Radio Show" anymore - first, because of ongoing confusion about the designation (indeed, it never was a proper radio show, it's a playlist; I kinda liked the idea though), and second because now that posting has gone up a bit (a few of you have noticed), the concept with comments/liner notes for roughly twelve tracks is just too demanding considering the time I have available for writing this blog. But there's still gonna be a new playlist on 8tracks.com every [...]
I happened to randomly check in on my favorite Filipino quintet, Moscow Olympics , and was surprised to see the band had a link posted to a free downloadable single on French label Beko DSL . The A-side is called "To Keep The Avenues Open" with the B-side being a demo version of "The Farthest City," a previously released split 73 single on Lostmusic Records . I'm still waiting for these guys to catch on with the rest of the music world, but in the meantime I'm content with absorbing whatever [...]
This is my attempt at making some sort of art in our weekly album cover feature. I wanted it to look like a rainbow, but didn't have enough rows for it...so a multicolor stripe was the end result. Three primaries and green. It ain't that bad. The music from these albums are better though. There's more to check out if you go clickety-click on them too.
Yeah, so, Milli Vanilli really happened . What can I say? I was young, and naive... sigh. To help clean your brain from that last post, it's time, once again, to share a little bit of what I've been listening to over the past couple of weeks. It's been another great period of exploration for me, and I've been working hard to share things with you each day. I've decided that the site works best on a Monday to Friday schedule, and I hope that you've found it satisfying. Also, I hope that you've had a chance to try [...]
I will miss the buzz of the Olympics when it's all done. It might not have felt like winter in Vancouver - especially with the dreadful rain that we're having today, but I do think the Winter Olympics was quite a success. I will particularly miss the free concerts and all those cute orange bikes I that the Dutch keep riding around with across the city. So in honor of the 2010 Winter Olympics, I'm having an Olympic themed post. This week, we have five songs that more or less (some really less) represent some of my favorite countries that [...]
Really holding a torch for this Filipino act who delve in the sort of classic jangle pop that we'd feature every day if there was enough good takes of it around. Moscow Olympics have been seen in all the right places (label wise) so you'll not be alone in being swept away by their sweetness. 'No Winter, No Autumn' also has the distinction of finding itself on Rough Trade's Indiepop Sampler from last year. The propulsive chime of the chords is one thing but when there's ample fey boy vocals thrown into the bargain you know there was only ever [...]
Modern forms of communication, if anything, have allowed the ability to spread awareness like wildfire. Case in point, this morning. Catching up on recent tweets, I noticed a link from Acid House Kings to a little something called Beko Records . I visited the site, downloaded all 25 current digital singles from the label, and began the task of checking them all out. Now I'm writing about it to let you know. And who knows where you'll take it. So we begin. [...]

Le Miel du Mois by Steph Lund: Novembre 2011
In my book there's nothing better for a persons development then having to perform under pressure. The bigger the audience, the higher the stakes, the more to lose, the better. There's something about those situations that requires you to simply man up and perform. It begs you to destroy your comfort zone, fail and constantly push yourself to get better at whatever it is you do. It also requires you to be out there all the time, in the mix, on hypothetical stage performing, trying new things and pushing it. It doesn't matter if [...]
