I'm back from the north country (where the internet is a public access terminal in the local library) and I brought some music with me. No Winter, No Autumn - Moscow Olympics I know that the Olympics are in China and that it's 2008 not 1980, but Moscow Olympics rock. The five piece from the Philippines has a little bit of twee, a little bit of shoegaze and a little bit of straight up pop. See also: Asobi Sesku, Galaxie [...]

Probably the best way to celebrate a musical legacy. Stamp on your heroes everyday... Some condemn bands for wearing their influences on their sleeves. But when they're modeled on the best, it can surely only be a good thing. Joy Division may have come to a premature end in 1980 but the list of bands who play homage to their low-fi shoe gazing indie style, continues to expand. Joy Division were never a pop oriented band but they knew how to lay a good hook and even managed to grace the singles charts once or twice. [...]

We're a few weeks late - okay, a month - with our mid-year songs lists, but i've finally gotten off my lazy ass to get this up. This has been an annual thing since the blog has started, so it would be wrong to just completely forget about it. Anyways, in previous years, I used to have a set of guidelines in choosing our favorite songs; this time around, though, I just let everyone choose whatever songs they wanted. It took a while to get everyone's lists, but after having all them for a couple of weeks now, it was [...]

After a week off the mixes are back. I am trying to get a few ready to go so hopefully there won't be another break again for a bit. This week's mix is a bunch of songs I got while listening to KEXP during their Sub Pop 20 year anniversary special so a lot of them are Sub Pop bands or from the Northwest. Enjoy! Soulsavers - Paper Money Black Ghosts - Full Moon Pigeonhed - Glory Bound (Remix by Dave Ruffy) Folk Implosion - [...]
Moscow Olympics - Cut the World. Driving back from Malibu, having spent the last two days working on a deck, I was greeted not by traffic but by an unbelievably thick layer of haze hovering over the city. The closer you got the more you could see, but from far out it was just a blur. Moscow Olympics traffic in pastiche. The drum beat, the interwoven guitar lines, the hushed, hazy vocals – all of it is familiar. And when it all builds in the pre-chorus without actually erupting, even that tension is familiar. Still, it works, and I like...

Moscow Olympics Cut The World Lavender June 11, 2008 It seemed almost impossible by the time to find something else to play in the stereo as you drove along the shore on Phillipines watching the ocean about to swallow and put you through eternity . Perfect synchronization between every rhythmic cell in your body, your car and the music would make for a perfect resonance that was sure to put the world on hold, the shore always closer and the road [...]

Post-punk and shoegaze are forever genres that will be remembered as prototypes of the 1980s. The emergence of both was triggered around a similar point in time, but the most striking aspect of comparability is the stark contrast both genres had when compared to the most commercially popular music styles of their time. Post-punk saw a peak during the early '80s and shoegaze began expanding in the late '80s. The gloomy bustle of post-punk contrasted interestingly with formulaic methods of dance and synth-pop that dominated the airwaves at the time, and the lush intricacies of shoegaze were ushered in nearly [...]

On their dreamy debut EP, Cut the World [ buy ], synth pop/new wave outfit Moscow Olympics echoes the sounds of classic Factory Records bands such as Joy Division , New Order and A Certain Ratio --- by way of the Philippines. Somewhere Tony Wilson is smiling. No Winter, No Autumn mp3 Safe [...]

Yeah, I know that the next Olympic Games will take place in China (you must have been living under a rock for the last few months if you've missed that fact!), but then you're probably not here for sports news anyway, are you? Thought so... then let's continue with the Moscow Olympics ! The band with this unusual name doesn't even come from Russia, nor from China for that matter. The five-piece was born in 2006 in the Philippines, and has since then [...]
It's been 24 years since Orange Juice called it a day after releasing the very underrated The Orange Juice album. Along the way a few bands have payed tribute to this seminal Scottish band. Blueboy named themselves after an OJ song and Belle and Sebastian in their early DIY roots claimed them as an influence. [...]

Still [ buy ] is the sparkling debut single from Philippine's Moscow Olympics . Heavily influenced by the synth-pop sound of New Order and the shoegaze/dream-pop of My Bloody Valentine , Still is 4 minutes and 8 seconds of new wave bliss. Still mp3 New Order: Age of Consent mp3

I forgot to mention this last month, but I was still on my little mini break at the time. If you've been keeping up with Moscow Olympics since they were first mentioned here on the site back in November, than you might've noticed that around Christmas time their first 73 was finally released on Fraction Discs ! If you happened to miss that previous post (read it!), not only is this quintet from the Phillippines, but they play some of the dreamiest shoegaze i've heard in years. It's [...]
