Something occurred to us when we were asked to help out with tonight's show at The Smell: We love The Smell. Seems appropriate to come to this realization when the little/big space on Main Street just happens to be celebrating their 13th Anniversary this weekend. We do have many fond memories of The Smell over the years. Many include our favorite local bands' early shows (Mia Doi Todd, Irving,

darryl blood Moses Campbell "And It's Over 13 (From Who Are You? Who Is Anyone? out now on olFactory Records) It's rare for an album to skirt corniness on its way towards moving your soul: think the Beach Boys' Smile, or Paul McCartney's Ram. Though Moses Campbell's debut makes use of Ram's "same song, different approach, multiple times" technique, Moses Campbell is far zanier than a post-Beatles uke song—more like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah as covered by the Pogues, or the Polyphonic Spree on [...]

Moses Campbell – And It's Over 1 Could be imagining it, but I detect this scrappy Irish blue-collar (or something) vibe on this track, not unlike the theme to The Office. You know, Moses Campbell are doing the soulful thing with the acoustic guitars vs. super clean electric guitar riff & accordion buried way down (god, that makes it sound awful but it's not) but then it's also real frenetic and fuzzed out; feels like the kind of thing you'd listen to on a shit stereo in a cheap car when you were 17 [...]

Teenage wunderkinds Moses Campbell — it's a six-piece band, not some grizzled folk singer that the name might conjure up — seem to have bottled up the exuberance of youth and the dreariness of aging on one calamitous album. "Who Are You? Who Is Anyone?" (just out on the Smell's olFactory Records ) embraces the present as only kids can but also reinforces the notion that the best way to eye the future is to cast wary glances over one's shoulder. Singer-guitarist Sean Solomon's woozy tenor is perfect for such musings, and the sextet (including Pascal Stevenson, [...]

The first time I saw Moses Campbell in full-band glory, I complimented guitarist Miles Wintner on the band's balls-to-the-wall manic performance that left bruises on my arms and amplifiers turned upside-down on the floor. He seemed a little reticent to accept my words as praise, telling me that "there are songs under there, man!" Sure, it's frustrating to have everyone lauding your energy when you've got some serious compositional muscle- but the shows are just so... darned... lively! Tonight at Pehrspace, the band celebrates the release of their new CD, out now on olFactory Records. So [...]

From top, left to right: Edward Sharpe, HolidayHoliday, The Sun, Moses Campbell, Voice On Tape, Katie The Pest, Robot Koch, BOAT, Mr. Dream What defines this edition of "Hear, Here" is a vaguely roadtrippy California aura. Perhaps each song marks a particular leg on a trip [that I'll never go on because I live in New York]. Many of these bands hail from California, and if not California, the West Coast, and if not the West Coast, fine, Germany. The sounds range from lounge-y tech house [...]
