Indie-electro trio Union of Knives this week revealed that they had split up, and with the announcement came the now obligatory goodbye statement. Sometimes a band's last words are witty, more often they're as bitter as a lemon marinated in vinegar. We've compiled a dozen of the best break-up speeches by Scottish groups, starting with the most recent. Will the last to leave please switch off the lights? Well here we go. The new year is yet to quite take hold or take off, but I promise you that things will kick back into gear this weekend. There are some fine love shows appearing on the calendar, slowly but surely, and eventually 2009 will get going. No rush though. This Toadcast is a bit of a mix. I've got some of this year's favourites, I look back at some of last year's favourites, and I also poke away at a couple of the bands I hope will make their mark in 2009. In that [...]
you sonsofbitches. you win at scrabble? no I win at scrabble. note the capitalisation. note it! this one time in france i used all seven letters on a triple wordscore. that was the fucking motherlode. how i partied hard that night, luxuriating in my own grammatical filth. following my return from the birmingham noisefest my inbox has [...]

My first bright idea about my year-end list of favorite songs is that I'm not going to put any songs here by bands on my year-end top-ten favorite albums list. That way there'll be less repetition, plus it's a way to highlight bands that I liked but never got around to hearing enough of. My second idea is that I'm going to separate them into "songs I listened to on the treadmill" and "songs that were too slow to listen to on the treadmill." Last year I did a whole seasons [...]

Mother And The Addicts hail from Glasgow. Their new (2nd) album Science Fiction Illustrated sounds as if it could have been recorded anytime betweem 1979-1989 however it sounds so thoroughly 2007. Imagine the Buzzcocks with beats or Eddie & The Hot Rods with the influences of The Fall. The band also conjour up some of the vibe of old British-pub rock scene that spawned the likes of Brinsley Schwartz or Dr. Feelgood. In fact, it was Mother's (Sam Smith) love of Dr. Feelgood, The Ramones and Roxy Music that led him [...]

So two days ago I went to a free kegger that also doubled as an indie dance party. After seeing Springfield favorites Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin (whose new songs were amazing by the way), we headed over to this so-called dance party which I knew no one and was curious to see how much dancing was actually going on. Well, it started with a few people, then the wallflowers got a little more social lubricant in them because of the keg and before we knew it, there were a good 15 or so people packed into [...]

It's been a while, so I decided to quickly clear out some of the promo pile. These discs caught my ear, I just don't have enough time to give each a full write up. So, here we go: Mother and the Addict : Science Fiction Illustrated Mother and the Addicts finds a home on Chemikal Underground Records, and they are a nice mix of Britpop and 80's indie rock, all twisted up with a Cocker accent. The hooks are subtle, but always enjoyable. Although they [...]
This album has turned out to be a real surprise bonus coming, from my perspective, slightly out of nowhere. Ultimately, given they're signed to Chemikal Underground, home to the deceased Aerogramme, the legendary Arab Strab and the high priestess of Scottish indie, Emma Pollock, I suppose I should have paid more attention to Mother [...]

Mother and the Addicts' second LP, Science Fiction Illustrated , is set to make a big splash in the US via renowned Scottish label Chemikal Underground. Led by Sam Smith AKA "Mother", MATA's tantalizing hybrid of post-punk, Britpop, and new wave references greats like Jarvis Cocker and The Fall whilst retaining its own unique character. Immediately parting company with convention, Science Fiction Illustrated opens with a psychodrama set in a Stromness bar. If its introduction is correct in promising a voyage into turbulent catharses, it gives little indication that they're going to be served up on [...]

It's been almost two years since Mother and The Addicts released their debut album Take The Lovers Home Tonight on Chemikal Underground Records . A nd later on this summer they'll release their second, called Science Fiction Illustrated. I met up with Sam Smith (Mother) briefly in Glasgow last week and asked him about the new album. When I asked him what it was like he said it was darker than the first. The cheeky cheerful Roxy music style tracks have disappeared, to be replaced with darker edgier [...]

Well, after several weeks of being off ill, and then the official school holidays i am back to school tomorrow. nervous? You betcha, but I'm trying not to think about it too much. This isn't going to be a long post, but I hope you'll like what I have posted. Aztec Camera -'Somewhere In My Heart.' mp3 OK so 'Oblivious' and the stuff from the first album are classics, but this is too. This was one of the first Aztec Camera tracks I ever heard, aged 11, and as [...]
