Husband-and-wife duo Tim and Nicki Bluhm recently released Duets , an 8-track folk album recorded at their own local studio. Alone, Tim and Nicki have their own musical track records: Tim Bluhm as co-founder of the Mother Hips , and Nicki Bluhm of her own Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers . Together, the duo create twangy folk with lush harmonies, as evidenced in "Unforgetaboutable". Tim and Nicki Bluhm - "Unforgetaboutable" Duets can [...]

Nicki Bluhm and Tim Bluhm are best known as members of the rootsy jam band Mother Hips but for me it's their solo work and now their work together on an EP of lofi country duets that is most interesting. As people, these two are quintessential Californians. They are surfers, lovers, environmentalists and do-gooders (I say that in only the most loving way). A good example of their ethos is a line from their upcoming Duets ep: "turn off the phone, put some Alan Watts on and just lay low" from the [...]

If you're already a fan of Nicki Bluhm and The Gramblers , you can go ahead blame the Bay Area's own The Mother Hips for your current obsession with this soulful singer. The group discovered this little gem and released her talents upon the world and the results have been rewarding. Already attracting fans with her vulnerable and surprising Toby's Song (2008) and tours with Josh Ritter, Jackie Greene, Phil Lesh, Pegi and Neil Young, Butch Walker, and Leon Russell, this powerful force has created a sweet, sexy, and strong album [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive John Taber, Facebook In the summer of 1996, a concert was held to celebrate the late Kate Wolf and to honor the singer-songwriter's memory by keeping her music alive -- even introducing it to new audiences. It quickly transformed into an annual festival that has drawn repeat appearances from artists ranging from Ani DiFranco to Steve Earle . This past weekend's edition featured [...]

by Jon Stone | @jwstone I got a speeding ticket when I was about five miles from Three Sisters Park , the site just north of Peoria, IL where Summer Camp Music Festival has been held every year for the past ten. I was going nine over the posted 45-miles-per-hour speedlimit but there was a nice little stretch of road along the Illinois river and I was gazing out over it wondering what to expect from the weekend. A few minutes into the traffic stop, I was informed by the officer [...]

Last year, Soulive helped to celebrate the month of March with a ten-show, guest-laden residency at Brooklyn Bowl that was cleverly dubbed Bowlive. For the second year in a row, the organ-groove trio will make the venue its home away from home with another ten-gig stand that kicks off tonight. Once again, the run will feature a variety of special guests that are already penciled in to sit in with the band throughout the run. Among the announced acts that will be joining Soulive this year will be Maceo Parker, Bernie Worrell, [...]

December 31st is the biggest night for live music of the year. An argument might be made for Halloween, but I'm not buying it. Your non-live-music-loving-friends don't say things like, "Halloween is the most anti-climactic day of the year" while you sit there and just snicker. We've been a little Phish heavy this week so let's take a look at how 24 other bands rang in 2011. Side Note: This was my first time using embedded images from setlist.fm and I must say it looks super slick. That site has really got it going on, [...]

facebook.com/Lastortugasfestiv al The lineup for the fifth year of the Las Tortugas Dance of the Dead Festival was just announced today with ALO, 7 Walkers, The Mother Hips and Tea Leaf Green topping the bill. The festival will take place once again down at Yosemite's West Gate on Halloween weekend. Poor Man's Whiskey will be doing Old and In The Way which has definitely gotten some attention in the past, but I'd be most interested to see how Guitarmageddon would be tackling the music of Prince. I imagine they got at least [...]

Jackie Greene @ City Winery, June 8 Over the last few years Jackie Greene has dazzled legions of Deadheads during his stint in Phil & Friends with his soulful voice and ability to deftly switch from guitar to keys. Last Tuesday night the 29-year-old singer-songwriter, who has been putting out albums of his own since 2002, was in town to play an intimate sold out gig at the haute music venue City Winery . With all the hub-bub surrounding Phil Lesh and Bob Weir's latest project Furthur , it would seem easy to overlook that fact that two of their former band mates - Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann - will also be out on the road this summer playing the music of the Grateful Dead. The duo has revived their Rhythm Devils moniker and will be joined by Sikiru Adepoju (talking drum), Davy Knowles (guitar, vocals), and Andy Hess (bass), while Keller Williams will handle vocal duties on their July date and Tim Bluhm (Mother Hips) taking over for [...]
In many ways Deadheads are like salmon or reclusive birds. If one looks hard enough, one can spot a Deadhead anywhere, but it's much easier to find them during periodic mass gatherings. Entire towns can succumb to the tie-dyed, bus driving masses that assemble for Gathering of the Vibes , All Good , Nateva , and the numerous other jam-festivals. 40 years after the Grateful Dead released Workingman's Dead and American Beauty , former Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir have decided to celebrate with a festival of their own. [...]
Around since the mid-'90s, roots-rockers The Mother Hips have always seemed to be one of those bands that have never been able to break it big despite their fervent cult following. The San Francisco-based act , who were originally signed to Rick Rubin's American Records based on Chris Robinson's recommendation, have had their ups and downs over the years - label issues, lineup changes and a hiatus. Despite it all they have a built their loyal fanbase via steady touring and releasing strong studio albums that showcase their Neil Young and Beach Boys influenced sound. [...]

With the strict criteria of needing audio that was captured live during the previous week, some editions of this feature are easier to put together than others based solely on who was touring and who allows taping. This week was pretty awesome, as when I sat down to put this together I quickly found tapes from Thom Yorke's Atoms For Peace, Mark Knopfler, and Ween. Rounding out with HT favorites The Mother Hips and a nod to our Cover Wars March Madness champion and voila - this one was easy. [Thanks to [...]

Like rock 'n' roll? Debauchery? Rock 'n' roll and debauchery skipping hand in hand in a golden field of wheat? Uh ... me, too. The first The Days of Lore Presents show featuring San Francisco's The Mother Hips is coming to the Doug Fir Friday, April 16 (the key word here being "the"). Joining them are a couple of great Portland bands in Jared Mees & the Grown Children and Monarques . All three make sweet, sweet rock 'n' roll ... you and I will take care [...]

Phil, Bobby and the rest of the Furthur guys have released details and a lineup for their Northern Cali music festival, which is now set for May 28-30, 2010 at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds at Mountain Aire in Angels Camp, CA. In other Furthur news, according to a post on the Philezone message board , drummer Jay Lane has decided to leave Furthur and re-connect with his former band Primus. The band will continue on with Joe Russo handling full drumming duties. [...]
