2011 was a big year for Vancouver’s Mother Mother , their third album Eureka gave the world my favorite Mother Mother track, “The Stand.” The band followed up Eureka with another solid release, The Sticks . When it came time to chat about The Sticks , MM 's frontman Ryan Guldemond (centre) chose to meet me at Cafe Deux Soleils , Commercial Drive's legendary vegetarian /coffee house / slam poetry / live venue. It turns out, Ryan has a history with Cafe Deux Soleils . Listen to [...]

Hailing from Vancouver, the art-pop quintet Mother Mother have carved themselves out a nice, comfy niche among the recent boon of notable Canadian artists who’ve gained a measurable musical foothold in the past few years. Brandishing their own distinct sense of pop appropriation, the band signed with Last Gang Records—home to past records from artists such as Purity Ring and Crystal Castles—and set about re-recording some of the songs which were found on their independently released debut LP. Their first release for Last Gang was an altered version of their self-titled debut which was renamed Touch Up, and included [...]

(Noah Pink) Not many people would say that th ey like being summoned for jury duty, but it's a task I take great joy in, especially when it means I get to listen to hours of music (as a member of the Polaris Music Prize) or watch reels of music videos as part of the inaugural Prism Prize from Canada's best music video. Like all good art, music video making has been on an evolutionary track. In its infancy, videos were nothing more than gimmicky, label-driven [...]

Claire Boucher Whereas the Polaris Music Prize already has a seven year track record of honouring the top Canadian album, the Prism Prize is new on the scene - unaffiliated but sharing a similar mandate, but focused on the art of the music video rather than the album. And while some may have assumed the art form was on the decline due to the fact that their traditional medium - broadcast television - no longer plays them, the internet as well as the low cost of entry to powerful high-definition recording equipment [...]

Mother Mother just can't settle on a sound. This isn't a bad thing; they've spanned pretty much every iteration of 'indie-pop' you can imagine without mixing, say, black metal into it (although that would probably be required listening). On The Sticks , the band sticks to what they know, and what they know is variety achieved by sheer willpower. The band's fourth album finds them testing their own ability to create a cohesive sound by destroying the idea that cohesion is something to be strived for. They almost succeed, pulling off exhilarating sonic [...]

Filed under: Video of the Day Artist : Mother Mother Video: "The Sticks" Highlight: "'The Sticks' was written more as an anthem for the renegade who abandons societal norms, but Chad's interpretation takes the song in a more hopeless direction, portraying a new society discovering the remnants of one prior, only to repeat patterns of megalomania which will ultimately lead to its demise," singer/guitarist Ryan Guldemond tells Spinner. [...]

Upon @tristanorchard 's return from Rifflandia this past September, he raved about up-and-coming act Rykka , who performed at the annual festival held in Victoria, BC. However, at that particular moment in history, the only song that played on my iPod was Mario's " Kryptonite ". Fast forward to the present tense, and you'll find me throughly pissed off for sleeping on such an amazing local talent. Rykka, real name Christina Maria, is a Vancouver-born singer-guitarist with a natural punk-rock aesthetic. Over the past few years, her sound has transformed from [...]
