The time has come to ramp up training for the STP (Seattle to Portland bike ride). Last weekend, I took a ride out toward La Conner along my normal route, which takes me down McLean. This particular road is on the path toward the famous Skagit Valley Tulips, and being in the middle of the Tulip Festival, traffic was anything but light. It's satisfying, passing a line of 30+ cars, stopped due to heavy traffic. You don't get that much in the country. On with the music... Receiving the [...]

Little can be found online about Anacortes band Motorbikes, despite recordings dating back to 2007. It could be the commonality of the search term, or maybe a purposeful push for obscurity. I think it's the latter. Hitting The Business in Anacortes last weekend, I grabbed a copy of the store's Record Store exclusive, a nondescript CD-R by the band. In fact, the packaging had no decipherable text and led me to inquire to @thebusinessrecs via Twitter what I had picked up. [...]

Tweet Earlier this year Pete & The Pirates released 'One Thousand Pictures' so in all likelihood they made anything involving words to describe its wonderfulness entirely redundant. The way pictures and their painting ways are known to do. In our eyes, or more specifically our ears, lead singer Thomas Sanders is the epitome of those genius writers with a gift for the lyrical gab and endlessly loopy melody. It's quite a distracting talent, keeping us from the billion other lesser species that [...]

Zola Jesus - Vessel 1. In full acceleration, Maggie, my motorbike, lags a jolt. Then another, like someone yanking a ponytail from behind. The dash doesn't light up so I can't check until I pass under a street light. Yep. Out of gas. The backwards jolts become more frequent as Maggie gasps for gasoline. I think. Where is the nearest gas station? Can I make it? I cannot. She sputters and coasts quietly through the thick night. I've never run out of gas with Maggie. I run my [...]
Maxim Soria, the drummer in the original line-up of Valencia, has died in a motorcycle accident . Soria immigrated to America with his parents when he was four, and grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. It's as easy as riding a bike. These photographs from the collection of the State Library of New South Wales celebrate the timeless joy of the bicycle. Man on a penny-farthing bicycle being chased by his sister (Maggie & Bob Spiers) - West Wyalong, NSW, C. 1900 [...]

Beginning in 1920, a team of farm boys, including Ray Weishaar, who became known as the "hog boys," consistently won races. The group had a live hog as their mascot. Following a win, they would put the hog on their Harley and take a victory lap. In 1983, the Motor Company formed a club for owners of its product taking advantage of the long-standing nickname by turning "hog" into the acronym HOG., for Harley Owners Group. Harley-Davidson attempted to trademark "hog", but lost a case against an independent Harley-Davidson specialist, The Hog Farm of West Seneca, NY, in 1999 when [...]

'Icon On A Motorbike' By Pris. After featuring Pris a few weeks back (here ) we've decided we can't get enough of them and our addiction must be fed. In fact waiting for their début single makes the eternal suffering of Tantalus seem like a bit of a walk in the park really and going cold turkey isn't an option. Thankfully help is at hand and Pris have taken pity on our plight and agreed to ease our torment by kindly allowing us to stream another of their songs , [...]
We Are The Willows It takes a man dedicated to his art to cast aside social norms, embrace this childlike voice and see what it can do. Peter Miller is such a man. First begun as a side project (Miller is the front man of Red Fox Grey Fox it now holds its own very distinct place in the musical goings on. Miller captured sounds from all over the Twin Cities; the whoosh of the light rail, birds chirping, etc. Matched with his tender and reflective lyrics to create an album that is really [...]

I came across this band named Motorbikes sometime last week while surfing my way around myspace and was instantly drawn in with their brand of chill indie jams. This Washington state duo consists of Paul and Nich who also run a little label for themselves called Fontee Fount where they released Motorbikes' first LP, New Color . The track "Two Tempos" is a slow building and infectious tune that you'll be caught humming for at least a couple days. MP3 :: Motorbikes - Two Tempos . New Color is available [...]
