Neil Young's Ohio, made famous by Crosby Stills Nash & Young, is a protest song referencing the horrible events at Kent State University on May 4th, 1970 that left four dead and nine injured. Recorded just three weeks after the fact, it was pressed to single and rushed to radio stations with the B-Side Find The Cost of Freedom. This weeks Music Monday feature has been put together by Ben Sommers. Ben is a unique artist, whose debut album, Avocado Chip was recently released to critical acclaim. Ben's music veers from twisted folk to confessional balladry, with an Orwellian undercurrent to his material, which, whilst not overtly political, is at it's core, a barometer of modern life. I saw Mott The Hoople play one of their reunion shows at the Hammersmith Apollo a couple of years ago, and to hear those songs played live was one of the most thrilling experiences [...]
I had the opportunity to see the recent documentary about Mott the Hoople this week at the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center as part of the New York Film Festival . Already available on DVD in the UK, it will reportedly be available in the US in November. I highly suggest seeing it if you need to be reminded how incredible a great rock 'n roll band can be. Apparently, I needed to be reminded. Just fantastic. Previously published at Stupefaction [...]
Few TV shows ever have so accurately observed the condition of the suburban teenager as The Wonder Years did. One may regard the series, which ran for six seasons (from January 1988 to May 1993), as an exercise in nostalgia. Coming into the middle of a revival that celebrated the 1960s and the beginning of the '70s, it benefited from fortuitous timing, but as a story of growing up as told by an adult man, the timeframe made perfect sense. Some may accuse the show of [...]
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Low has definitely been around for a while: since 1993 they have been crafting their signature slow core beats for the world to enjoy. Hailing from Duluth Minnesota, this three-part band certainly knows how to spin beautiful tales of whatever they fancy and if nine studio albums wasn't testament enough to this, than this tenth should seal the deal. To start things off, Low showcases their most distinctive quality right up front on "Try To Sleep." Sounding distantly akin to [...]
If only this masterpiece was recorded 20 years sooner, Spacehog might be mentioned in the same sentence as Marc Bolan and Mott The Hoople instead of being mentioned in the same sentence as Deep Blue Something and Eve 6. Even worse are the comparisons Spacehog must endure to acts such as The Darkness, who's similarities to the England-via-Brooklyn rockers starts and ends at the misleading shorthand that lazy pundits use to describe each band's perceived songwriting style. Even though one band predated the other by so many years that they are not even contemporaries, it's [...]
The Smith Westerns were still in high school when they first won over the online music world with their excitingly gritty, self-titled debut. Post graduation, the band sounds just as eagerly optimistic as before. Their bubbling youth shines throughout their second effort Dye It Blonde , but despite their lack of experience, they still aim high. The Smith Westerns make rambunctiously large music. They pay homage to your favorite garage and glam rock groups by giving you roughly edged anthems to both drift and cheer along with. "All Die Young" could already be the power ballad of [...]
Mott The Hoople : All The Young Dudes [ purchase ] David Bowie wrote All The Young Dudes for Mott The Hoople when Mott was struggling to place something on the charts. It was to the point of them throwing in the towel but Bowie and Hoople bassist Peter Watts got to talking and Bowie offered them Suffragette City. Mott rejected that so Bowie came up with All The Young Dudes. The song became a signature glam rock tune but Bowie later said the song was intended to speak to the [...]
(Music Before 1990) T. Rex - Electric Warrior Thirty-nine years ago this week, Marc Bolan and his band T. Rex hit #1 on the U.K charts with their breakout single "Get It On" (re-titled "Bang A Gong (Get It On) in the U.S.). The song and its associated full-length Electric Warrior formed the foundation of the new genre known as "glam rock." The genre is best remembered today for the theatricality and androgyny present in live performances and [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music Growing up, Alejandro Escovedo looked for guidance and validation in rock 'n' roll songs. Should his 18-year-old son, Paris Diego, do likewise, he might start with 'Down in the Bowery,' a standout track from his old man's latest album, 'Street Songs of Love.' As Escovedo explained Tuesday night at New York's City Winery, midway through the first of this week's three record-release shows, he wrote the tune in honor of the teenager, a sullen graffiti artist [...]
The Ballad of Mott the Hoople Is a Phenomenal Rock Doc
I've already mentioned the great new documentary on Mott the Hoople , but it's worth mentioning again. The Ballad of Mott the Hoople , just released this week on DVD, would probably work well for certain reasons regardless, simply because of its subject matter: One of the greatest, most underappreciated, interesting bands of the past 50 years, and one that hasn't been exhumed and discussed to death either in books or on film. But Ballad triumphs for being far better than it needed to be. It's simply a terrific documentary, telling nearly the full tale [...]

Mott the Hoople Documentary
Here's a preview of the upcoming documentary on that most unheralded of British bands (and one of my all time favorites), the monumental Mott the Hoople . I have never been one of those fans who ever considered traveling ridiculously long distances simply to go see a band, but when it was announced that the original Mott lineup was reuniting for a small run of shows in London in 2009, you can bet I was weighing the options. There's lots and lots to say about Mott the Hoople, but I'll just start with this: If you haven't [...]
