The Legendary Mott The Hoople Announce UK Tour in November 2013

Formed in 1969, Mott The Hoople went on to become one of the best loved and most influential rock groups of all time. Their string of hits started with the David Bowie-penned “All The Young Dudes”, after which the band’s legend was written with original classics such as “All the Way From Memphis”, “Roll Away The Stone”, “Saturday Gigs” and “The Golden Age Of Rock N Roll”. The band, whose fame was established initially by their incandescent live shows, reformed to celebrate their legacy in [...]

REDUX: Tracie Hunter

"Junkman" - Tracie Hunter ft. Joe Elliott & Phil Collen
Tracie Hunter knows more than simply what it's like to be the offspring of a classic rocker. As daughter of legendary Mott the Hoople founder and frontman Ian Hunter, Tracie not only grew up on the majesty of the power chord and a killer backbeat she's also explored her own rock and roll chops, working with the likes of Sex Pistol Glen Matlock, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Bad Company. Hunter's latest album Vasilisa (out now) owes more to her dad that just the iconic shades and vocal rasp. Witness "Junkman" with Hunter and Def Leppard [...]

BLACK SPIDERS - KISS tried to Kill me Official video
Loads of great content on the web today - here are a some of my faves! ClashMusic has two great recent articles with some classic rockers types: - Mott the Hoopple mainman and solo artist Ian Hunter spills the juice on what makes music click, and how the Mott reunions went down. - More from ex-Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook on the rough feelings within the band, and promoting his new book release, ' Joy Division: Unknown Pleasures '. As the little monsters finally begin to leave the house again, let's take a moment to look at the songs about that wonderful place that keeps them out of our hair; school. It happens every year; that magical time when the kids head back to school. We all dreaded September as children. [...]

Desert Island Discs: One Hit Wonder Edition

Spirit In The Sky - Norman Greenbaum
By this estimation, the decade of the One Hit Wonder was the 1970s, as our panel of potentially stranded passengers voted for 18 tracks from that era to take along on their doomed trip. The 1980s came in second, followed by the 1960s and 1990s (in a tie), and then the 2000s. A quartet of these shooting-star songs received multiple [...]

Tour Dates: Ben Gibbard Goes Solo

Tour Dates: Ben Gibbard Goes Solo While Ben Gibbard has dabbled with side projects in the past - most notably his 2003 collaboration with Jimmy Tamborello dubbed The Postal Service - he has pretty much dedicated his energy to his full time band, releasing seven albums with Death Cab For Cutie . On October 15, that will change as Gibbard will release his solo debut Former Lives, via Barsuk Records, which will feature twelve tracks that were written over the course of the last eight years. The DC4C front man has lined up a short ten-date cross-country small theater tour that [...]

40 Years Ago Today: Mott The Hoople Break Up ( Or Do They?)

40 Years Ago Today: Mott The Hoople Break Up ( Or Do They?) Mott The Hoople : Death May Be Your Santa Claus [ Purchase Brain Capers ] It happens more often than we'd like to remember. Great bands end not with a bang but with a whimper. And so it would have been for Mott The Hoople. On March 26, 1972 Ian Hunter and the boys decided to call it quits. Had it not been for David Bowie, Mott's last album would have been Brain Capers ( a hard rocking effort that kicks off with "Death May Be Your Santa Claus") and their [...]

Ripple Theater - Ballad Of Mott The Hoople DVD

The Ballad of Mott The Hoople - original promo
Against all odds, I've become a big fan of Mott The Hoople over the past few years. I always liked some of their songs but never bothered to explore their music in great depth because I never thought I'd really like it. I've never been a fan of Bob Dylan or the Rolling Stones and both of those artists are big parts of the Mott sound. They have an association with one of my all time least favorites, David Bowie. But for some reason I was drawn to them and started checking out their first few albums that were released [...]

The Ballad of Mott the Hoople Is a Phenomenal Rock Doc

I've already mentioned the great new documentary on Mott the Hoople , but it's worth mentioning again. The Ballad of Mott the Hoople , just released this week on DVD, would probably work well for certain reasons regardless, simply because of its subject matter: One of the greatest, most underappreciated, interesting bands of the past 50 years, and one that hasn't been exhumed and discussed to death either in books or on film. But Ballad triumphs for being far better than it needed to be. It's simply a terrific documentary, telling nearly the full tale [...]

Cover Wars: Ohio (Crosby Stills Nash & Young)

Cover Wars: Ohio (Crosby Stills Nash & Young) Neil Young's Ohio, made famous by Crosby Stills Nash & Young, is a protest song referencing the horrible events at Kent State University on May 4th, 1970 that left four dead and nine injured. Recorded just three weeks after the fact, it was pressed to single and rushed to radio stations with the B-Side Find The Cost of Freedom. The Contestants: Artist : Anders Osborne & Big Chief Monk Boudreaux Album : Bury the Hatchet [...]

Music Monday – Old and New: Mott The Hoople / Jack In Water

Music Monday – Old and New: Mott The Hoople / Jack In Water This weeks Music Monday feature has been put together by Ben Sommers. Ben is a unique artist, whose debut album, Avocado Chip was recently released to critical acclaim. Ben's music veers from twisted folk to confessional balladry, with an Orwellian undercurrent to his material, which, whilst not overtly political, is at it's core, a barometer of modern life. I saw Mott The Hoople play one of their reunion shows at the Hammersmith Apollo a couple of years ago, and to hear those songs played live was one of the most thrilling experiences [...]

The Ballad of Mott The Hoople

The Ballad of Mott The Hoople I had the opportunity to see the recent documentary about Mott the Hoople this week at the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center as part of the New York Film Festival . Already available on DVD in the UK, it will reportedly be available in the US in November. I highly suggest seeing it if you need to be reminded how incredible a great rock 'n roll band can be. Apparently, I needed to be reminded. Just fantastic. Previously published at Stupefaction [...]
