In keeping with this weeks Bowie vibe, here is a re-post from last May. Also, have you noticed the prominent use of the Mott's "All The Young Dudes" in the Juno trailer?? While I was never an ardent fan of Ian's band Mott The Hoople, I have always loved their biggest single hit, the David [...]

Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to attend a free screening of the movie Juno in Washington DC. It is a quirky movie directed by Jason Reitman ( Thank You For Smoking ) about a 16 year-old girl who becomes pregnant [preview below]. Although, at times the humor felt a little forced, this was a very enjoyable movie to watch, that I highly recommend you go see when it releases in December. If you are in a big city, it is possible that Fox Searchlight is offering several free screenings before then, so you may want to check [...]
If you haven't noticed, the Canals have been on a bit of a break from posting. Two weeks to be exact. School seems to have gotten the best of us. But that doesn't mean we haven't been thinking about you guys. I saw The Darjeeling Limited last weekend, and I've been on a Kinks kick ever since. Here are two songs from the soundtrack and a few other of my favorite tracks of the past 14 days. The Kinks - Strangers Download audio file [...]

THE JOURNEY Mott the Hoople Brain Capers Atlantic : 1971 [Buy It] Once, many years ago, I left my small town to travel to the big city. Before I left, I spent the better part of the evening with the woman I loved, kissing her and running my hands across her shoulders and back. At dawn, I embraced my parents and set out on foot, with nothing in my pack except food, a canteen, and a knife. What else do you need? The city [...]

Well folks, I'm gonna be out of town for the next several days, in Memphis TN, the jewel of the mid-south and one of my favorite places. So, feeling a strange obligation to keep all of you readers amused, I've compiled a little playlist of songs concerning Memphis. None of these mp3's are from actual records (i.e. 78's or 45's) like in my ordinary posts, but they're all good and I'm sure some of will you prefer the less noisy recordings. Plus, it's really a bitch to find a copy of Mott The Hoople on 78. There were several [...]
Did you know Ian Hunter has a new album out next week? For those interested, it's on Yep Roc, entitled Shrunken Heads. While I was never an ardent fan of Ian's band Mott The Hoople, I have always loved their biggest single hit, the David Bowie penned "All The Young Dudes." It's anthemic in [...]

mott the hoople - bastard (a mountain of one re-edit) (mp3) I hear that you and your band have sold your guitars and bought turntables. I hear that you and your band have sold your turntables and bought guitars. one of losing my edge's closing remarks, and something i'm quite sure will ring true forevermore - just as you start to think that "dance don't do them guitars no more", another resurgence begins and you realise you better get those 1210s on ebay again (well, maybe [...]

Honestly...can Yep Roc get any cooler? Check this announcement from the label whose artist roster (Paul Weller, Sloan, Nick Lowe, Apples In Stereo, Bob Mould, Robyn Hitchcock, You Am I, Heavy Trash, Billy Bragg) sounds like a playlist from the best jukebox ever: Ian Hunter , legendary Mott The Hoople frontman and renowned solo artist signs to Yep Roc [...]

Mott the Hoople achieved its greatest commmercial success after David Bowie "discovered" them, gave them the song "All the Young Dudes," and produced the album on which it that song was included. But I believe Mott was at its best on the four albums prior to that, culminating in Brain Capers , released in 1972, an album that is, in my opinion, a hard rock classic. (Hard rock was a genre, not a casino hotel in Vegas, in those days. I don't remember exactly how it was defined, except that hard rock meant good rock, and plain rock could [...]
