Bambara are playing the Drunken Unicorn tonight (Wednesday) So I continue to scan through other people's year end posts and add albums to a very long list of stuff to listen to, but I'm already finding so much good new music. For instance, I just finished listening to Bambara 's self-titled album for the first time, and it blew me away. The three piece Athens, GA outfit has been playing together for about 7 years, but this is the first release from them as Bambara . I'll have more on this one upon closer inspection, [...]

I always hear people saying this year was a bad one in terms of music. Not including some of the fantastic US releases ( Kozalek, J. Tillman, Black Diamond Heavies, Micah P Hinson, the dual Centro-matic/South San Gabriel, Karl Blau , Neil Halstead , and the trend to showcase your Afro-centric influences all come to mind), the bounty from the Canadian scene in '08 was impressive and for me, picking my favorites was a challenging task. While some might think that is a sign of mediocrity, I think it shows the solid collection of albums available this year. [...]

This is the section where all the non-traditional albums show up. It is reserved for Ep's, singles, live albums, compilations, film scores, mash-up type albums or anything else that doesn't fit the traditional studio album bill (especially Bob Dylan's Tell Tale Signs: the Bootleg Series Vol. 8). Check out the list after the jump... 10. Avett Brothers – [...]

38. Department of Eagles In Ear Park When I first learned that Grizzly Bear's Daniel Rossen was stepping out and releasing a side project album under the name Department of Eagles I was a bit worried that he was attempting to cash in on the success of his other band. Little did I know that Rossen and Fred Nicolaus had started the project long before Grizzly Bear even existed, and even released a couple of albums of sound collages and remixes. So maybe Department of Eagles wasn't a true side [...]

I think it's safe to say this little list has caused me a lot of stress. I've looked at it a hundred times and it just never seems perfect. I'm pretty sure this is the best I can get it without making it a top 50 or top 100 list, but I know that as soon as I hit "publish" I will immediately want to make a change or two or twenty. I should also mention that the rules of this list are similar to the top songs list . Bon Iver's [...]

And here we are again, for just the following 10 of the list. Yes, It takes a lot of time writing these posts, which is the reason why i postpone it, but i need to finish this. So, off we go: 30. Final Fantasy - Plays to please/Spectrum, 14th Century ( Blocks recording club ) Sounds like: Indie, the musical. How vaudeville can you get, is a question that you can ask if you listen to these two teasing [...]

We're not done celebrating 2008 yet, guys. There's still a lot more great releases to go, and here's five more. There may be better years for music in the future, but 2008 definitely isn't going to go down without a fight. Once again, these albums are in no particular order--this ain't no top 10 list--and let the good times roll: 1. Girl Talk - Feed the Animals Not only was this one of the best releases of 2008, but Feed [...]

So here we are. Best albums of 2008. Good year I have to say, I may have contenders for best of decade that come from this very year - good sign, no? Disclaimer - While I tend to convince myself that I know music, I only know what I hear and actually take the time to really dig my teeth into. That being said, I am always correct and I take criticism terribly. There is always something I discover too late to move up the list or something I forget all [...]

Here's the second installment of our radio show-oriented 2008 music recap. We're still following through this overview chronologically, so we're perusing through some of this year's earlier releases. They might be a few months old, but this podcast is certainly packed with a slew of catchy tracks that you might have missed or forgotten. This podcast let's you relive 2008 again and again and again. The Needle Drop 12-06-08 Playlist: Tim Fite - "Yesterday's Garden" Animals Talking - [...]

I am often seduced by a good melody. Rarely do I sway as easily to rhythmical complexity or well-written lyrics; frankly, I think a band can get away without having either and still produce interesting, influential music. (Think Cocteau Twins ). Any group, however, that can deliver both melodic and lyrical depth is truly a keeper. And I should have suspected the combination of Mount Eerie's Phil Elverum (the eccentric genius behind The Microphones ) and Julie Doiron (the quiet, and best known offshoot of influential Canadian indie act, Eric's Trip ) [...]

In case you were wondering, what with the record release schedule in a lull for the rest of the year, I'm going back and examining some albums and EPs from the later part of 2008 which I happened to have missed due to time constraints, a heavy workload, or general laziness. Most of these records aren't ones I missed personally, just missed writing about. I've been listening to them for some time already. So let's get on with it then, shall we? If the name Phil Elverum fails to ring any bells for you, I strongly advise checking [...]

For being a solo artist Phil Elverum (born Phil Elvrum) sure likes his pseudonyms. I first discovered Elverum at the tail end of his run as The Microphones. I kept noticing The Glow Part 2 on everyone's top ten lists of 2001, and decided to give it a spin. The album is almost uncomfortably candid. It sounds like Elverum recorded the LP in his room, and stood way to close to the mic. However, this blend of adolescent awkwardness with complex instrumentation is what makes it a Phil Elverum recording. Another defining trait of The Microphones, [...]
