When SOTC caught up with Mount Eerie's Phil Elverum on the phone a couple weeks ago, he wasn't quite ready for us. "Just let me turn down my Nirvana," he said before asking me to call him bac... Continue reading "Interview: Mount Eerie's Phil Elverum" >
"Do you like your black metal? Do you like your black metal on weeeeeeddd?". Phil Elverum's Mount Eeerie is self-described as "black wooden", which I think is a perfect name for this kind of music, and also shows his love for Twin Peaks and Black Metal bands as well. Elvrum's "broken analog" style remains true and blue on this album as it does with any past Mount Eerie albums and Microphones album.. it's the closest thing to listening to a vinyl record on your ipod. These songs [...]

Mount Eerie Wind’s Poem ( 7.2009, PWE&SUN ) Verdict: Best album of all time. So, I guess I should explain the verdict. You see sometime last year I tried to compile a list of my fav albums of all time, and resting comfortably in the number one spot is Mr. Phil’s The Glow Pt. 2 . I pretty much listened to that album at least 5 times a week between ages 17-19 and even till recently if you asked me what’s my favorite album, I’d easily reply The Glow Pt. 2 . [...]

With all the shit that's been going on recently I haven't really found the time to post anything, or even keep up to date. There's been so many new things happening to me that the thought of actively seeking MORE new things to digest seems crazy. Regardless, I have picked up one or two things that have been the most recent soundtracks to my confusion. Having been on a severe Death From Above 1978 diet for the past month with a touch of Jesus and Mary Chain may explain why Crocodiles [...]
So the tourdates are up, and it's official: New York is getting the most metal Mount Eerie show by far. Where most of Phil Elverum's dates are with some combination of likeminded old souls No Ki... Continue reading "New York Mount Eerie Show to Be By Far the Most Metal" >
Under Wind's Poem, Phil Elverum--a.k.a. Mount Eerie--has come out with one of his most abstract albums to date. Folk and pop have always played a role in Elverum's recording projects; keeping the music grounded and acessible. However, this LP takes things in a different, darker direction with the sounds of drone, ambient, and black metal music. It's a bit of a departure, but the music's mood
We already told you about Why? 's new album , Eskimo Snow. If you need a refresher, it's a 10-track effort, described as "a little more resigned and introverted" than 2007's Alopecia and due for release on September 22nd via anticon . We also now know that the San Francisco rockers will be supporting the release with a lengthy North American tour this fall. Beginning in late September, Why? will embark on a six week cross country affair, meeting up with the likes of Mount Eerie, AU and Serengeti & Polyphonic [...]

You know the feeling. You pick up a record and play that first song and it totally bowls you over or it leaves you totally underwhelmed. Regardless, we have pretty lofty expectations for that first track. Many would argue that the first track is absolutely the most important. It's not that the other tracks aren't great, but there is something special in the opening track of an album. We also all know how it feels to love the first track on a record, but be totally ambivalent to the other tracks and there is nothing more frustrating. So, if the [...]

Francisco Infante-Arana & Nonna Gorunova Mount Eerie - "Between Two Mysteries" Mount Eerie's thrilling and exhausting new record, Wind's Poem , expands on the idea of "black wooden", from last year's Black Wooden Ceiling Opening . Black wooden is like black metal, but instead of roaring throaty death-voice, Phil Elvrum murmurs. The guitars distort, fuzz and howl but there is an inherent gentleness. This works for me: this kindly noise . It is how I feel on the [...]

It's been nine months since I last updated you all on the progress of my Day Zero List. If you don't know what that is, or you haven't been reading this page for long, allow me to inform you. Day Zero is a project that is aimed at helping people achieve 101 personal goals in the span of 1,001 days. The website dictates that once your preset tasks have been ordered into a list, your "project" begins. After that moment you have roughly 2 and 3/4 years to complete everything you want to do. In my opinion, it's [...]
There comes a day once a week where you just feel like putting something down on paper (or, I suppose, its digital equivalent) - if only for the simple, narcissistic pleasure of having some part of you - in an unignorable and undeniable sense - proven existent. It's like a weekly recital, an om chant [...]
Between Dawn, Lost Wisdom, and White Stag, Mount Eerie's past couple releases have been, well, quiet. Maybe it had something to do with frontman Phil Elverum's jaunt into the sounds of hardcore on Black Wooden Ceiling Opening, which was an ear-splitting surprise.Whatever it was, it sounds like Elverum will be getting back into his usual studio trickery on August 18th with a new LP, Wind's Poem.

[mp3] Mount Eerie: "Stone's Ode" We wrote a bit ago about our excitement for the new Mount Eerie record Wind's Poem (out 8/18 on P.W. Elverum & Sun). Today we get the first listen to a track from the new record. Of course, it's dark - and as Stereogum points out, this album seems to be coming more from a Microphones style of music rather than the hushed approach of leader Phil Elverum's last effort Lost Wisdom . We'll let Phil sum up things [...]
