To someone who has never attended SXSW, the annual music, film, and interactive conference that takes place in Austin, Texas, it is nearly impossible to describe. Unlike the traditional recipe for a festival, which includes centralized festival grounds and stages, clear borders, rules, and a line-up that is easily understandable, SXSW is a sprawling landscape of experience containing hundreds of overlapping events occurring all over the greater downtown area. Thousands upon thousands of eager attendees descend upon the warm and welcoming Texan city, turning the streets into the music geek's ultimate playground. For nearly an entire week, at any given [...]

The first episode of Channel 4's exciting new series "Abbey Road Debuts" will air tonight, featuring celebrated post-dubstep wizards Mount Kimbie. The show, which is to be presented by Tom Ravenscroft, will showcase performances o... Read more..
Post-dubstep duo Mount Kimbie have the distinction of being the first act featured on the debut episode of Abbey Road Debuts, a new TV show airing on Channel 4 on April 6th. The twosome performed tracks from their recent Crooks & Lovers album and are kindly offering a free download of their performance. Download it [...]

Though it may have been April Fools Day, nothing about Mount Kimbie's set felt like a joke. In fact, according to our resident electro-photographer Lymay Iwasaki, the combination of Mount Kimbie and Shigeto was a great pairing. His only knock was that Shigeto's ramped up set made it hard to shift into the mindset required to appreciate the more stripped-down soundscapes Mount Kimbie is known for. Not that their set wasn't good, he said. It was more a matter of headphone electronic vs. dancefloor electronic and in a live setting, the latter tends to speak louder. [...]
Last week we crossed that particular zebra crossing to that particular wall plastered in largely illegible scribbles to those particular legendary studios. It was something of an honour to breeze through the Abbey Road Studios reception where behind heavily soundproofed doors, the perpetually sumptuous Lower Dens and later a newly concocted SBTRKT live show were committed to the studios' famed reels. Abbey Road Debuts is set for its TV debut this week, with a Mount Kimbie session airing April 6th. A little while back we quizzed host Tom Ravenscroft on the whole [...]

Crowds at SXSW Surreal doesn't even really begin to describe the experience of SXSW , the festival that twenty-five years earlier began on lawns and small venues around the University of Texas campus and has now grown to overtake the entirety of Austin. Although the festival also encompasses an Interactive and Film portion, what the vast majority of the masses descending on Austin come for is the four-day, jam-packed, non-stop drinking musical extravaganza that SXSW is most known for. Being a SXSW virgin I didn't really know what to except when I arrived [...]
Where have Hotflush been? Where are they right now? And where are they going? All valid questions indeed, with answers potentially hidden somewhere within the compiled tracks of Back and 4th . It depends how fussy you are, I found them pretty much straight away but I'm also incredibly deluded/hungover so chomp on that. Brass tacks... The CD release is split in half, with the first disc throwing out 10 brand spankers from label mainstays while the second disc is a straight up walk down memory lane. The vinyl plays out slightly differently, the precise [...]

Watching Mount Kimbie play live in concert is an interesting experience, because, honestly, there's not much to watch. A couple of young British dudes twiddling knobs and bouncing their heads in time when the beat locks into a groove. Occasionally one picks up a guitar or hits a drum, sure, but visually there's not too much there. So watching Mount Kimbie play at ND on Thursday night of SXSW 2011 wasn't so much watching as it was feeling, as the bass whoomped and the tics and bips ricocheted off of the venue's high ceiling. The duo's [...]

Sach O wishes he could look so easily disaffected. In the liner notes to Hotflush's new compilation, there's lots of talk about the label being a musical outlier. While I won't disagree that their biggest success stories Mount Kimbie and Joy Orbison stand apart from easy genre classifications, I'd also posit that the label's best material has carved out a clearly defined lane in Bass music and we're all the richer for it. Drawing on Dub Techno as much as Dubstep, Hot Flush releases have been heavy on atmosphere, progression and sophistication and light on [...]

via In the distant past bands used to perform on TV, not just UStream, Boiler Room or on fuzzy youtube rips. There was TOTP , the O-Zone, Popworld and (even longer ago) The Tube or The Old Grey Whistle Test. Now there's Abbey Road Debuts, a new programme presented by Tom Ravenscroft (him off BBC 6 Music). It features one band each week and in this series, that starts on April 6th, there will be performances from Trophy Wife, Lower Dens and [...]

Mount Kimbie - Before I Moved Off (Abbie Road Debuts recording) ( mp3 ) Pilt ajakirja Clash [...]

When possibly your favourite musical duo announce they're going to be on a brand new music tv show, you're bound to be excited. Imagine my delight when Mount Kimbie were said to be part of the first batch of filming for the new Abbey Road Debuts , this was back in February I believe. Imagine my despair, even though I've seen them twice, when I realise I have to wait till April to see the results of this filming as I didn't win the twitter giveaway for tickets. So, after a mixture of emotions, I am pleased to say [...]

After four days of non-stop dancing, eating an overload of tacos and pizza, sleeping a maximum of five hours a night and tweeting so much your thumbs are sore, it is best to wait a few days to reflect on your SXSW expedition. So ... after some rest, our ears are done ringing and we are ready to reflect. Mark your 2011 calendars to get up offa that thang and dance to these five artists listed below, they are a guaranteed good time. [...]

The All Saints Spitalfields / I AM SOUND 2011 Day Party at Shangri-La on Wednesday was excellent, a definite contender for best day party/showcase at SXSW thus far. Following a set from Friendly Fires, which I sadly missed, LA's latest talk of the town Foster The People took to the stage.. or backyard tent. Fresh off the heels off of what's likely to be LA's best residency showing yet in 2011, this young multi-instrumentntalist and multi-tasking collective proved not an ounce short of all the hype they've been showered with at this their first [...]

Hello everybody! Well, not the most Fonogramatico-centric first day, but there was still plenty of bloggable content worth posting from today's day shows. For one, that photo. Yeah, I know it looks weird, but that dog had TONS of relevant things to say about the current stability of the Middle East and the long-term implications of American foreign policy in the region. Mind-blowing, dudes. Anyway, there were two major highlights from the day show action. The first was a short set by the subtle [...]
If we're plundering blogs for cool mixes like we own the internet, then we may as well put this one up today too. TightFace's beat tape (straight up stolen from One Handed Music) features the voices of some well known New Yorkers you might have come across before.
