Alive and as well as can be expected after February's Christchurch, NZ, earthquake forced him from his family's home, Jonathan Phillips ( Mount Pleasant ) is back to releasing new music. "Slipped Era" is the fourth single we've heard from upcoming full-length The Aztecs . It may also be the best. Where the previous singles were more forward-thinking, dance-oriented jams, "Slipped Era" belongs to the disco era. There's definitely a DFA vibe here, too, with the monotonous, hipsters-in-arms vocal dubs. Like the best tracks on LCD Soundsystem's This Is Happening , the funkiness [...]

Jonathan Phillips aka Mount Pleasant has periodically released tracks this year one by one. The choppy percussive nature of these tracks flow between rapid rhythms that stumble across synthetic bass grooves. Futuristic broken beats Similar to Los Angeles street bass virtusos' Samiyam , Free The Robots , and Tokimonsta will keep you on your feet, showing signs of a more ambient minimal kind of 2 step garage, similar to the hyperdub natives Burial & Zomby . These very solid, [...]

Tuesday's earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, was another tragic example of what can happen when earthly forces and human populations intersect with random chance. Scores were killed and many more remain missing. And yet, even in the midst of Christchurch's sadness and suffering, some positives can be found. Hundreds of aid workers and eventually millions of dollars will flow to the area to help those in need and assist with rebuilding. On a personal level, it's how I found out about Mount Pleasant 's music. Curious about Christchurch, I went to bandcamp and [...]

As summer is coming and its still freezing in canada I wish I was in Florida right about now. Enjoy Mount Pleasant - Florida

Here is a track I recently came across from Mount Pleasant. I had to post it it's just too good. Read More >>
I don't know too much about Mount Pleasant. But after hearing the track on I Guess I'm Floating and the title of the track being "Florida" (where I'm from) I took a quick listen. What we hear is a combination of hazy wavy fuzzed pop and psychedelia all blended in together. There are layers upon [...]
After I was gipped out of last weekend to an untimely illness, it feels great to finally get my "free" on this time round. Seeing how its a love themed day tomorrow, I thought I'd... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]
Ok maybe chillwave isn't totally dead or dying. As long as dudes like Toro Y Moi and newcomer Mount Pleasant have anything to say about it, it's only just begun. What we can be sure of, though, is gone are the days of chillwave solely as 80s disco pop throwback. That was inevitably too lazy, both in the style and the sample abuse, and its welcome wore out quickly. What we've got now is endlessly more interesting, a continuation of Neon Indian's original defining approach: chillwave created from layers and layers of music [...]

MP3: Mount Pleasant - Florida Sounds like chameleonic Christchurch solo artist Mount Pleasant is on another new kick with this track, swapping the more haphazard and shambolic characteristics of previous projects for some ultra smooth glamour pop. It's a big hit, too, riding on a deep Phil Collins pulse and indulging in all kinds of pop luxuries; lush harmonies and chiming hooks - sort of reminds me of The Style Council or maybe Nite Jewel but with less dust and brighter shades of pastel. [...]

Mount Pleasant - Zimbabwe Cock Fight Mount Pleasant - Silver Serious amounts of humidity up in these tracks from Christchurch, New Zealand's Mount Pleasant - perfectly realised exotic visions with a weirdly familiar charm; guess it's cos he's got his heart in the sahara and his body in the bedroom. Samples play out like mirages on the roof above yr bed; elusive rainforests, steamed-up vocal nectar & smoked-out polyrhythmic chants, floating drifter wooze. Download his latest album, The Flood from Mount Pleasant blog . [...]

Tropical/noise combination plates may be the budget item of the blogateria but it will always take some special sauce and a few secret ingredients to spark an aroma like Mount Pleasant's. It's thick and pungent and peppered with equal-part fractured noise and deviled vocal melodies and with a whole double album available for free at the band's blog, it leaves you with a belly full of minute and a half songs with names like "I Watched You In The Park Removing Every Piece Of ...
