Review: Mountain Man: S/T (2009) I feel weird listening to Mountain Man on my ipod. The ironically named band of three women folkies have produced an antiquated record that sounds like it was captured on a cassette recording of your hippie neighbor's backyard vegan barbecue. The songwriting is exceptional; harmonies slide back and forth in a traditional folk style, sure to evoke some scene of "O Brother Where Art Thou?". Mountain Man walk a fine line between Sacred Harp (think Cold Mountain OST), gospel, and Gregorian chant [...]

Best live act: Grizzly Bear Best use of reverb in conjunction with recording the year's best EP: Cotton Jones - Rio Ranger EP Second Best Live Act: Deer Tick , especially between John McCauley's third and sixth drink. Band I most likely won't like in 5-10 Years: Passion Pit, largely due to Michael Angelakos's piercing vocals which I fear might hurt my hypothetical child's frontal lobe development and general ability to hear whistles. [...]
In an effort to somewhat merge the AD show on XMU with that of the blog proper, this is the first of what will most likely become a recurring series. After the jump, check a selection of 27 (mostly) new-ish tracks I've been spinning over the past few weeks - 1/2 of which have not [...]

My favorite new musical discovery is Mountain Man, which is the the best accompaniment I have found for the onset of winter. The band make intimate, harmony based, sad folk songs that are as fragile as the falling leaves outside my window. Mountain Man is three girls from Vermont, Amelia Meath, Molly Sarle, and Alex Sauser-Monnig, who recorded their self-titled album over the course of two sessions in 2009, one in January and the other in May. The album is available via Bandcamp with a 7" released promised soon via Open Face Records . [...]
Got back to L.A. last night. The middle of my autumn traveling mix for the rental car was made up of Warpaint's "Billie Holiday," The Middle East's "The Darkest Side," John Martyn's "Over The Hill" and the following track by Bennington, VT's Mountain Man...which is made up of three women. Ideal for the change in [...]
by kevin diamond In Honor of our 11th Hype Filter, we've got 11 tracks that have been floating around in the ether for the last month. As always, we sift through the hype and filter out the crap so you don't have to. ► First up is "Absolutely Anything" by Brilliant Colors , another San Fran band that's solidifying the city's reputation as the West Coast's Brooklyn. They're on one of my favorite labels, Slumberland, and this tune's [...]

It's the tracks in the snow that caught the attention. First, we didn't know much what could have walked this way. [...]

MP3 Mountain Man-Animal Tracks

HANK ALTOGETHER From Ray Concepcion , via Gorilla vs. bear and Chocolate Bobka are a trio of women who are known as Mountain Man . All ironies aside, this stunning video from their live show at CMJ is one part Kali, one part mountain hymnal, and one part microbrew. Don't be too quick to draw the Fleet Foxes comparisons, these ladies harmonies can stand on their own. Not too heavy, it's a deep breath of fresh air right out of the Vermont mountains. Mountain Man [...]

Thanks to Chocolate Bobka and Ray Concepcion for this one: Bennington, Vermont's Mountain Man work their haunting autumnal magic, live at Monkeytown during CMJ. mp3: mountain man :: dog song ********

Sewee Sewee

Crash Kings performing live at the Wonder Ballroom Portland, OR The Crash Kings drummer played very hard throughout his set. By the end of their 9 song set, he was soaking wet in sweat. The loyal Portland Mason Jennings fans came in force as expected but Crash Kings put up a show that engaged the crowd and really put out a great effort. . . [...]

[ photo ] Chocolate Bobka introduced us to Vermont 's Mountain Man a month or so back , but it was CB's more recent post -- specifically, the amazing 3-part harmonies on the strikingly intimate " Dog Song " -- that really floored me. Sure to appeal to fans of Joanna Newsom, Alela Diane, Marissa Nadler and the like, Mountain Man creates sounds that are at once stark, fragile, and sad, but there's a genuine warmth here [...]

Mountain Man - Animal Tracks Just in case you've resigned yourself to the onset of autumn, this is the perfect pick-me-up: ushering in the charms of crinkling leaves, thick jumpers and foggy breath. Mountain Man is a trio of women from Bennington, Vermont who write songs about the sound of redwood pines in the night and who are willing to play at your house. Their physical 'tour' album is sold out but you can listen to songs that are set to be released next year here . Thanks to Chocolate Bobka for this [...]

There are some great new LA bands hitting the Richter scale down there in the land that takes pride their rockin roll country.... they are comfortable when the earth below shakes and rattles and of times rolls. Take if from an ex Californian here, they love the land of sun, sea, mountains, wine countries, lakes, and desert all within an hour or more drive no matter where you live and who wouldn't. They also love their music.... however in the past decade the LA area hasn't produced the level of new bands (or been a place to attract) as many new [...]

I feel as if I am floating. I am waiting suspended in the internet for the three lovely ladies from Mountain Man to contact me. I am a little nervous, it feels a bit like a blind date with someone you already know. Mountain Man was formed earlier this year at Bennington College (alma mater!), and have been getting some great press . They went on tour this summer, and I was dying to talk to them about their exciting adventures and beautiful [...]
