As of tonight, if you add up all the Sunday Mix Tapes I've ever made, you get exactly five years worth of music. I don't go around boasting about how I was the first music blog to conceive of a weekly mix tape…but I sure go around thinking as much! Seriously, who the hell even [...]

"The so-called 'professional's' worst handicap, in making anything, is that his knowledge sets into him and concretizes all his thought, thus blocking him from creative adventure..." Stan Brakhage, introduction to Lenny Lipton's Independent Filmmaking (1972) Brakhage was fond of quoting Maya Deren's etymological derivation of "amateur" from the Latin amator , or "lover"; that is, "one who does something for the love of the thing rather than for economic reasons or necessity." And, indeed, cinema is unusual in that most of its avant-garde development has been initiated by so-called (or self-professed) amateurs. Take Marie Menken, [...]

i'm addicted to blip at the moment, enough to upload songs to blip myself rather than relying on what's out there. and today i did a bit of a tribute to the city of bristol theme. ::: beatnik filmstars - apathetic english ::: flying saucer attack - beach red lullaby ::: crescent - 360 ::: girlboy girl - unfamiliar ::: massive attack - daydreaming ::: the heads - quad ::: k.s.kollective - (to a) secret brother ::: [...]

God help me if the next two weeks are anything like today was at work. I'm going to be such a miserable piece of shit. I'm trying to think positively about my temporary schedule change, but it's so depressing. I might as well be one of those cult goons standing on a street corner near the "Dream Center," handing out lemonade to passing cars. That's how useless I feel. When I took a short 15-minute break today, I found myself walking across the street for a soda, and I had a vision of myself five hours later crying over a [...]

Continuing the Decibel Tolls' celebration of Mr. David Madson, a.k.a. Odd Nosdam (featured below, lookin' mighty handome), finally collecting all of his sludgegaze-hop non-LP jams together on one priced-to-own, triumphant double disc collection, Pretty Swell Explode , it's time to celebrate... with a super fun history lesson, complete with classroom activity ideas. Take a seat, kids. One of the obvious standout tracks from the compilation, and his most standout collaboration in my opinion, is "Untitled Sketch" featuring Jessica Bailiff . This song [...]

Here we have the debut from the mumbly, lovable Movietone, famous in small circles in their own right, though their recognition appears to rely on band members' affiliations with Flying Saucer Attack and Crescent. Side B appears on their self-titled debut album, but I appreciate the band's decision to leave one song from each 7" uncompiled to egg on eggheaded collectors like me. This was released on Planet Records in 1994. Side A mp3: Movietone - She Smiled Mandarine Like Side B mp3: Movietone - Orange Zero

• A site called 10 Zen Monkeys ran an article on the 5th asking if the Internet has been good for writers, or if it has made them obsolete. The writers who were questioned appeared hesitant to state a definitive answer, electing instead to share examples of how the Web has transformed their careers. Typical solipsistic writer syndrome stuff. Several of the interviewees managed to plug their books within the first sentence! In my opinion (that's why you're here, right?), professional writers ("those who specialize in writing well") should still be able to rise above the masses who fancy themselves [...]

One of the best things about living in Los Angeles is that I'm a short drive away from Santa Monica. "What's so good about Santa Monica," you ask? Well, allow me to answer that query for you. First of all there's Father's Office, a great bar that offers Rogue, Avery, and all the best west coast breweries on tap. They also make the world's best sweet potato fries. Sure they don't let you use ketchup on the fries, and you can't make any substitutions, additions or subtractions to anything on the menu (what you see is [...]
