MP3: "Grand Champion Steer" Between the Ass Ponys and Wussy , Chuck Cleaver's got 11 or so full-lengths and countless EPs and singles under his belt. One wouldn't expect the heavily tattooed Cincinnati songwriter to produce his best collection of songs this late in his already highly-prolific career, but that's exactly what he's done with, in my opinion, the best release coming of out Ohio in 2011. To be fair, Cleaver's not the sole songwriter in Wussy, it's a collective effort with Lisa Walker (guitar, vocals), [...]

MP3: Moviola - Prison Cash I'll just let Moviola 's Jerry Dannemiller explain in his own words: "Prison cash. Crown of thorns. 40 times round the horn." We recorded this one in Used Kids a few months back essentially around one mic, except for a few bits. We are full grown men now; when we started doing Moviola, back at the dawn of the internet age, we were noisy shavers. Though the frequency with which we (Paul, Greg, Jerry, Ted, Jake, and in spirit, Scotty) collectively gather is [...]

MP3: Moviola - Let The Saw Do The Work Jerry Dannemiller fronts this next tune in a series of freebies from Columbus's Moviola, also featuring background vocals by Eve Searls. Get more free Moviola music from Bandcamp . Tweet
Disaster by Moviola Another free Moviola track. Words and music by Greg Bonnell. Recorded by Jake Housh at Rustic Bridge, Used Kids Records and Indianola Presbyterian Church between 2010 and 2011. Tweet

One lies to his bosses and gets patted on his head The other wants to bargain and is told to drop dead Fire Tressel, not teachers Save the children, not Judas MP3: Ron House & Moviola - Fire Tressel, Not Teachers Ron House , opinionated as ever, wrote this one and recorded it with Moviola around one mic at Used Kids on Tuesday night. Also available at Moviola's bandcamp page , along with some other great freebies the band has [...]

MP3 : To Your Heart's Content Over the last few months, Moviola have been casually releasing free MP3s over on their Bandcamp page. The latest, featuring our friend Bird and Flower sharing vocal duties, may be the best yet. Tweet

Click here to view the embedded video. MP3: Moviola - Aspidistra Blocks Here's another new track from Columbus pysch-roots vets Moviola. Plus a green-screen video, credited to James N. Reynolds/archive.org. Apparently the band is releasing a new song and video the first of each month in 2011. This is good news. Time to bookmark Moviola's Bandcamp (do people still use bookmarks?). "Aspidistra Blocks" was recorded around one mic at Used Kids last spring.
When I first got the notice that Moviola was debuting a new track on Bandcamp called "Yankee Road", I wondered to myself, "Why would these guys decide to cover David Lee Roth's first hit as a solo artist?" Then I realized DLR's hit was "Yankee Rose" ( "I'll take a bottle of anything ... and a glazed doughnut .... to go" ). There's still time though. Moviola's going to be giving away many new tunes, for free, in 2011 on their Bandcamp [...]

In the midst of World Cup madness, here´s yet another edition of Wild Weekend . Always aiming to broaden your musical horizon, featuring the grooviest sounds from all around the globe. This week we travel from Paris to the Punjab, from Trinidad to the Big Apple, and from California to Ohio. Take that trip. Let´s start with the masterful DJ Shadow and a track from one of my all-time fave albums: Endtroducing..... No matter how many times you spin that disc, one still discovers new details every time. Wonderful [...]

MP3 : Rudy Not too shabby . Says Rhapsody's Justin Farrar in the intro: If you're a purist, then many of the jams you're about to encounter are going to confound, maybe even offend, you. And that's because I have a very liberal (some would say skewed) definition what constitutes roots music. Fellow Rhapsody scribe Chuck Eddy once used the phrase "art country" to describe my aesthetic sensibilities. And he's right. I love rootsy stuff, but I also love psychedelic weirdness and underground-bred eccentricities. Hence [...]
Once again the Columbus Music Co-op are throwing a free party in the parking lot of Surly Girl Saloon in Columbus, OH. This event is a fundraiser for their musician's assistance program and is always a great event - a sort of nice counterpoint to the monster-sized event that is Comfest . Schedule: Apocalypso ...........................3:0 0 pm Total Foxx.......................... ..3:45 pm The American Jobs.................4:30 pm Winter Makes Sailors ...............5:15 pm Chuck and Lisa from Wussy .......6:00 pm Rosehips .........................6:45 pm Deerhead [...]

i, at one time, wanted to start my own label, but i had to be honest with myself and admit that i dont have that kind of freakin time to dedicate to something like that. as much as i would love to venture into something like that, i just dont need another distraction that could lead to another mild obsession. i still may try to put out a few things here and there, but nothing like the scope that i would ideally like to get into. some of my fellow constituents have done just that, parlayed their respective [...]

Friday's Moviola show was my second Surly Girl concert experience, the first being the Alina Simone/Jerry DeCicca show back in July. Right now Surly Girl is two for two in my book, and I'll likely head to more in the future if the bar keeps it up. Only a living room could be more intimate than this space. Pass all the mildly hectic eating and drinking in the front section of the Short North bar/eatery and you'll eventually hit a curtain that serves as a visual and aural divider. Behind it, there's the tiniest of stages [...]
Jerry, my erstwhile Ohio drinking buddy, and his band of (not-so-merry) Black Swans are heading out on the road in support of their latest, Change! ("a worthy addition to the sad-bastard music canon" - The Onion AV Club ). Of note in particular is this date, which should be an amazing show: 4/14 - Columbus, OH - Cafe Bourbon St. w/ Moviola and American Music Club ::: The Black Swans - Shake ::: And [...]

One of my favorites discoveries of 2007 was Moviola's Dead Knowledge , released on Catbird Records and ended up becoming one of my favorite records of the year . Brattleboro, Vermont based label Spirit of Orr "is releasing a collection of out-of-print singles, b-sides, comp tracks, a live track, and altogether unreleased Moviola songs (23 in all) dating back to our earliest days. "Broken Horses" will be a short run, 300 copies in hand-painted digipaks." Obviously, news of uncovered and long-lost recordings are of interest [...]

MP3 : The Ledge Columbus Ohio's Moviola is releasing a rarities collection on Spirit of Orr . Details from the label: Anyone following along with the trajectory of the Spirit of Orr 'scene' is already deeply and keenly aware of the vital role our friends MOVIOLA play in the puzzle. Any methods that result in uncovering truthful moments and in turn inspire the listener to uncover the same for themselves, are methods hard found and precious. This is what we champion, and Moviola was among the earliest and [...]

Catbird Records, 2007 In Review In recent years, and this year in particular, there's been a lot of healthy debate about "new models" for record labels. I would just like to point out that, hell, we've been running one of these newfangled "ad-supported" models for over 2 years now. Starting in the Fall of '05, after 3 years of ad-free existence, Catbirdseat.Org finally decided to take on advertising. But it wasn't to line our pockets, no sir-- we immediately began directing 100% of that revenue toward putting out great [...]
This month's mix has posted for your listening pleasure, and I just had a realization: I should be double-posting mix tracks here every month, so that y'all aggregators can get at 'em, too. Durrr.
