A few weeks ago, the city of Philadelphia hosted a wonderfully eclectic indie festival called Popped! Taking place over the entire weekend, artists from all points on the genre spectrum made an appearance. Philly is an old, northeast urban environment and the available space for a large festival is hard to find. The organizers decided to bring each day of Popped! to a different venue, leading to a diverse group of environments for the attendees to visit over the weekend. Being that the festival was on a smaller scale than some of the more famous [...]
Fakts One Long Range / Green Streets / BUY Out of the vaults comes an almost forgotten record from Boston producer/DJ, Fakts One. Long Range out this week, a dusty but impressive collection of works enlisting the likes of Little Brother, fellow (and former) Perceptionists Mr. Lif and Akrobatik, Army of the Pharoahs, Boot Camp Clik, Planet Asia and [...]

Tonight in DC don't miss Pat Mahoney (of LCD Soundsystem) perform a DJ set along with Will Eastman. Or if you're up to it go to the Popped Festival in Philly featuring Vampire Weekend, Mates Of State, Gogol Bordello, Crystal Castles, Dan Deacon, Mr. Lif, Hoot & Hellmouth, The Ting Tings, Daniel Johnston, Little Brother, Slick Rick, The Capitol Years, Sam Champion, Cheers Elephant, White T's and White Belts, and Turbostation. mp3: Vampire Weekend - Oxford Comma mp3: Mates Of State - Think Long mp3: Crystal Castles [...]

from roughly 1994 until 2000, hip hop was completely dead to me. it wasn't until i came across aesop rock's float and the deltron 3030 record that my interest in the genre began to flourish for a possible round two, round one being from '88 - '94. during the younger days of hip hop, i fully immersed myself into the music and it made a big impact on my later listening habits. but i got truly tired of the inconsistency. i could never depend on an artist/crew to put out two or three succesive records of good to [...]

Understand that I realize this song is called "Live from the Plantation," and my job's not that bad, though slaves did get to meet people and I'm isolated from all humans, regardless of race, creed, or anything else. But yeah... I need a new job. I need to be around creative people who are willing to work together . Being a cronie for a one-man-act is not my bag. AND WHY IS HE STILL CALLING ME PETER?!?! Mr. Lif - Live From the [...]
Not much happening in the City of Angels in the way of shows this week. To reinforce our picks for new music this week , run check out the dude bros in MGMT @ The Echo this saturday. [ed. note: saw them last night and they sounded great] But don't forget to look snazzy cuz the Silverlake hipsters will be out in full force. I like the girls with the pointed shoes and the over priced "vintage" t-shirts. Or maybe you'd rather get schooled in the ways of intellectual hip hop with Mr. Lif [...]

The concert calendar has been slooooow around here lately. But there are signs of life, including a Feb. 1 show from Mr. Lif , who put out the fantastic Mo' Mega last year on Definitive Jux . I got a chance to catch Lif at the Paid Dues Festival , but I'm eager to catch him in a smaller venue that isn't outdoors in the dead of an Arizona summer. He's calling this the Road to the Super Bowl tour; the big game is at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale on Feb. [...]
Are you feeling those fall season blues? Well on November 19th things will get considerably better. Gorillaz are set to release a double disc remix and b-sides album on that day entitled D-Sides. Some songs you might have heard off of the singles, but others are completely new. The second disc is strictly remixes featuring contributions by Soulwax, DFA, Junior Sanchez, and Hot Chip to name a few. Here's a couple songs of the first disc and a teaser trailer they released. mp3: Gorillaz - bill murray --> website [...]

The sun is out, it's warming up outside & the rain has finally gone away. And by the number of people I saw up today, it is graffiti season again my friends. Time to dust off your cans, mean streaks & scribes & go get famous. Here's some graff related tracks to listen to while you're stalking the tracks. MP3: Aesop Rock - Train Buffer MP3: Mr. Lif - Wanted [...]
It seems Def Jux is a little jealous of Stones Throw Records collaborations with animated panic-spreading geniuses Adult Swim so they decided to get on the free mixtape action too. Its called Definitive Swim and features tracks from Def Jukies Aesop Rock, Cage, Mr. Lif, Rob Sonic, El-P amongst others. You can download the album as a zip with the artwork and all. I know the Aesop and El-P tracks are new as theyre from their forthcoming album. Before you get it though, have a look at the tracklisting and listen to a few of the tunes below. They also [...]

<img src=" http://img380.imageshack.us/im g380/6097/coverartkt8.jpg" alt="Def Swim" Wow, after the Stones Throw approved Chrome Children 2 freebie you'd have thought that Adult Swim would have had their fill of chucking quality hiphop releases our way but keep coming. The newest release features 10 tracks from Def Jux 's biggest and brightest - entitled "Definitive Swim". Commendably, it's mainly new material with a Cannibal Ox remix of Mr Lif's Brothaz (new Can Ox album due by end of '07), some dope Aesop Rock who I'm slowly warming to and one of the best tracks [...]

Ah.... music blogging. It's all about the present, the here and now. Just look at the Hype Machine's popular searches if you don't believe me. Sometimes though, it's nice to go back and revisit albums in your collection: some you love, some you've forgotten, some you never appreciated in the first place. Edan's 2005 album Beauty and the Beat falls into the latter category for me. I listened to it a few times but sometimes frame of mind, place or circumstance mean you don't recognise how good it is the first time around, so it seems [...]

This is perfect for all readers for ADD - 800 hip hop tracks in 48 minutes? Complete madness. Mixed by DJ Jaguar Skills , this Holiday mix breathlessly skates through the history of US Hiphop from 1979 to 2006. Although he doesn't make any smart reimaginations through blends or whatnot, and it sounds a little like someone flicking through your (amazing) hiphop MP3 playlist it's still a thoroughly entertaining listen - even if only to hear some classics that you'd completely forgotten about and to scope how hiphop has changed through it's 27 years. [...]

First things first... that Common Gap commercial has a nice beat. I don't like to do much of the sample spotting... but I was vexed when I found out Will flipped "Holiday" and added a few kicks and pieces (one of which being Bob James "Mardi Gras" fill). EVEN STILL... Will.I.Am is killin it this year with the production, so I once again give him props. Though he still has a lot to do to make up for Fergie (get your money Will!). Moving on... Fuck Christmas. I'm not really [...]

Oh the slippery slope of ranking rap & hip-hop on indie music blogs. Not that I totally consider MOKB an indie music blog though. Well, these are the rap/hip-hop albums I listened to and liked most this year. You may not agree and that's a-okay with me. Please feel free to point me towards others. In fact I encourage and appreciate it. Here is the listing. Reminder: DJ albums will have their own list later in the week. DERT's Sometimes I Rhyme Slow [...]

Remixes have long vexed me: gratuitous overexposure of a song or worthwhile artistic endeavor? (My co-hort Royce is rolling his eyes as he reads this.) I know remixes have their place in deejays' crates and the dance clubs. But casual listening is another story. I don't necessarily think a remix waters down an original, but it certainly might steal some of its thunder. That depends, of course, on the producers behind it. On this track, though, off Mr. Lif's 2006 release Mo' Mega , I'm coming around [...]

What to do, what to do? My conundrum is your bonus this week. I couldn't decide between two tracks by the same artist... so I chose both, yup, two tracks for you this week. They're by the artist known as Mr. Lif . He's an emcee from Boston and is currently signed to Def Jux, he is infact one of very few emcees that I actually pay close attention to lyrically. His lyrical content is often deep and controversial, but it is the method of delivery that really captivates me - definitely a unique style [...]
