mrandmrsmays Genre: Alternative / Indie / Punk From: Austin, Texas United States There are some things that just go together well. Eggs and bacon (vegetarian bacon that is!), peanut butter and jam (or jelly for the Devil's American readers), milk and biscuits (cookies for the Devil's American readers). One thing I never thought would go well together is The Cure and Riot Grrrl. [...]
A double workload lately as we prep two shuttles silmultaneously (one for a mission to the Hubble Scope, one in case of a needed rescue), so we'll just share the music and you can play judge. Should have more time over the long three-day weekend, so look for more to come! The Dares - mp3: Love Me When I Leave - MySpace : [...]

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you put marriage, babies and rock n' roll in a big 'ol pot and stirred? Well what you end up with is mrandmrsmays . This super fun married couple from Austin, Texas smash into the indie-rock scene giving it some edge with a punk rock twist. Stuck in the habit of working separately, the couple has a rather odd and unorganized method for writing music. In fact, a large majority of their songs are comprised of so many different elements it's surprising [...]
Mrandmrsmays is the Austin, TX-based duo of James Mays and his real life wide, British ex-pat Kate Kind. The band plays very raw and real rock. The pendulum can swing from short-explosive garage rock to spacey, trippy tracks in no time whatsoever. Whether it's a Jon Spencer-esque clatter jam or a sultry PJ Harvey slow burner, there is a frenetic energy and tension within each song. The group pushes the limits, yet knows not to go beyond the breaking point. [...]

Catcall "August" - This song is a state of post-traumatic shock rendered in super-saturated synthesizers and a beat that keeps on moving, but only seems to pace around in a circle. As the music expresses numb confusion, the vocals convey a slightly muted form of anguish. At some points in the song, Catcall's voice recalls Courtney Love at her most vulnerable, and that association serves the song well. After all, Love always excelled when we could hear her tough facade disintegrate into raw grief mid-track. ( Click [...]

This post is long, and overdue, but I wanted to be thorough and include all the bands I saw. I missed most of Wednesday due to work, but packed in enough free shows Thurs.-Sun. to more than make up for it, although I am getting kind of old and took it easy in the evenings for the most part. I've finally gone through hundreds of pics (click on pictures below for larger image), and will include mp3s from each band below and hopefully a link to some of their live SXSW sets, since they did almost all give me free [...]
