Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band ::: Photo by Josh Lovseth All too often we place new things into a category or bucket of like things in our mind and expect it work according to the rules of the category we've come to know. Some artists try to fit the label to a tee and in [...]

photo by Brittney Bollay Last Friday, KEXP celebrated Ballard as the winners of the Hood to Hood Challenge during our 2011 Summer Membership Drive. As promised, we brought the party to them, with five Northwest bands playing free shows outside in downtown Ballard at Bergen Place Park. Ramona Falls , Deep Sea Diver , My Goodness , The Maldives , and Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band all threw down amazing sets with new music, and KEXP DJs Cheryl Waters and Kevin Cole did their shows under our tents. The sun [...]

photos by Brittney Bollay and Dave Lichterman It's 5:35pm at KEXP's Ballard Day broadcast for Hood to Hood 2012 and everybody has but one question on our minds: Where is the drummer? Just when it looks like the final act may not happen, the indie quartet Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band triumphantly takes the stage to close out the day. A month ago, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band released a great trailer for their new Prehistory EP , which will be released at the beginning [...]

With a week of awesome weather (not just for Seattle, I mean period .) comes a very back-heavy bevy of both shows to go peruse and enjoy. Friday, though, is Hood to Hood 2012 , the festivities of [...]

While I quite liked their past (at least the part few others liked), I'm all for Mt St Helen's Vietnam Band saying I should forget it and their uniforms and discover their new sound. Especially if the first tastes, "Warm Body" (our song of the week this week) and the just posted "We Won't Change" [...]

Dntel – Bright Night [mp3] (from Aimlessness , out June 5 th ) Electronic artist and producer Jimmy Tamborello continues to deconstruct and reassemble music and beats to the delight of weirdoes and iconoclasts (myself included). His music as Dntel is very different from The Postal Service collective (with Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie ), but could still win over some converts of conventional electro-pop. Volcanoes [...]

Pond at Buffalo Billiards during SXSW / photo by Jim Bennett Another busy schedule of shows this week. On Monday, Hot Snakes are at Neumos with The Bangs and Spider Fever , and Kelly Hogan is at the Triple Door with Puddles Pity Party . On Tuesday, there's a free performance by The Lumineers at Sonic Boom Records in Ballard, Rodrigo y Gabriela are at Paramount, Kathleen Edwards is at Neumos, and Bowerbirds are at Crocodile with Dry The River [...]

Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band is back with their first new material since their 2010 sophomore LP, Where The Messengers Meet . "Warm Body" is off the new MSHVB EP, due out on Dead Oceans in the near future. The track is on the softer side of what we've heard from this Seattle band, but it remains as tight and composed as their existing library or work. I still long for tracks like the pleasantly erratic "Albatross" and the indubitably catchy "Cheer [...]

It is happening again. After two dormant weeks of doing virtually nothing (OK, very little is more like it), evenings this week were spent spinning vinyl by The Smiths and painting Andi's sewing room in preparation for putting in the bamboo flooring this weekend. Next up will be my record room, which will be a big pain; moving thousands of CDs, LPs and 73 Singles is not a task I will find enjoyable (hence the top photo). But the finished product will be the ultimate reward. I digress. [...]
