I've known about Bishop Allen for as long as I've been running this blog, but for some reason or another I just have never listened to any of their records. I'm sure I would enjoy their material, and maybe in some other parallel universe I'm praising them just like everyone else, but I guess I'm just waiting for someone to put one of their albums on my lap to listen to. Well, I may not be on the B.A. bandwagon, but there are some other releases this week that I can certainly get behind. [...]

Cheer for Fate . The first video from Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band containing their actual music. "Cheer For Fate" was conceived, shot, and edited by the band. This is the song that makes you think they sound like Modest Mouse. It also deals with subtitles, longing for love, and lots of physical destruction. Super 8 = awesome! . Don't forget: you can currently stream the entire album [...]

Another week, another set of new album streams. Actually quite a few good ones this week from bands ramping up for a SXSW jaunt including Handsome Furs and MSHVB. Bishop Allen's new one drops today as well, but there does not appear to be a stream, but I do believe they will be SXSW bound as well. MSHVB and Bishop Allen will be hitting Dallas next Wednesday at HOB as part of that so if you are in town check that out. Handsome Furs - Face Control Mt. St. [...]

Anni Rossi Rockwell Anni Rossi - "Ecology" from The Line of Best Fit ..."And although some of the sense of mischief that pervaded her earlier recordings has evaporated the uniqueness of Anni Rossi's voice may have tired the ears over time and all in Rockwell is a charming, satisfying record and one which exposes a talent that at last may be worthy of "new Regina" tags that have been thrown around in the past couple of years." Arbouretum [...]

Lots of talk about Bishop Allen , Cursive , The Number Twelve Looks Like You and the new Punk Goes Pop collection. Hate to say it, but I'm not really looking forward to any of them much. A few that might get overlooked: Mirah 's new release is awesome. Portland's repping pretty strong these days. Bell Orchestre should be interesting. Includes a couple members of Arcade Fire , which automatically draws it some bonus attention. Time will tell if [...]

NEW METRIC ALBUM Perhaps not surprising to the Cannibal Cheerleader faithful, we're big Emily Haines and Metric fans down here in Austin. So when we nabbed a copy of their newest LP Fantasies we had high expectations - and we were certainly not dissappointed. Never before has the band sounded quite so road-weary or despondent, and their relatively lo-fi sound, with Haines' vocals buried as deep as they've ever been in the mix, reflects this change. Fantasies is the Love & Rockets of dance-punk, an album for the long, rainy [...]
Thanks to the wonders of the internet, I was able to stream to Say Hi 's latest album, Oohs & Aahs , prior to last Friday's CD release show, where the group opened for Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band , also releasing their self-titled debut. The record, of course, was available for purchase beginning March 3rd. Both bands would play said new records in their entirety on Friday, with Say Hi actually executing this in tracking order. Having not previously been a fan of Eric [...]

[Here's a sampling of some of the best stuff to hit my e-mailbag recently ...] Loney Dear 's new album, "Dear John," was released in January but for those of you that haven't gotten to it (or who missed their L.A.show with Andrew Bird), this is for you. Hailing from Sweden, Loney Dear's frontman Emil Svanängen and band will make the rounds at SXSW and eventually return to L.A. for a May 16 gig at Spaceland. ||| Download: [...]

The Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band are releasing their self-titled record to the world on the 10th, and this Friday they're doing a local all-ages CD release show with Say Hi (who's also releasing an album) at Neumos. The full length seems to be getting just as much buzz as the buttoned-up EP got when it came out last summer, and with a healthy tour through Austin supporting Bishop Allen on the horizon, their notoriety among indierattie (I just made that up, can you tell?) is bound to increase even quite a bit. This [...]

It was a few weeks ago that a co-worker told me I should check out Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band . From the opening ooh's and harmonies of "Who's Asking" I was sold - the band, who hails from Seattle, is totally engulfed in what I call the northwest sound. Those harmonies are totally reminiscent of The Joggers, while the production reminds me somewhat of Blitzen Trapper. They bring something new to the table, something original, with outrageous dynamic shifts in their songs. "Little Red Shoes" is [...]
