Eddie Vedder: Oscar Winner? Nine Inch Nails demos Phish on pay-per-view Motley Crue headlining Bamboozle Dave Grohl is a Muppet
Five covers of the Beatles' proto-metal classic that include interpretations both heavy and not-so-heavy.
During their years of touring, Guster has taken on many cover songs with both their sensitive and playful dispositions (but mostly the latter).

Photography by DarkMagoo ... Can you imagine that there was ever I time that I 'defended' Bon Jovi over Metallica in the schoolyard? So what that I was only 11 when I did that. I must been've stoned out of my fucking skull trying to convince people that those poodle haired assfaces were anywhere near the acknowledged kings of thrash metal. Anyway, that time has long gone since. What hasn't gone though is my undying love for the crappy music genre that's called Hair Metal ! It's not that I play this [...]
:: Mike Portnoy has left Dream Theater ?!?! That's like Paul McCartney leaving Wings . Well, not exactly... :: Speaking of which, President Obama will be giving McCartney a Kennedy Center Honor ... even though Macca was making googly eyes at the First Lady a few months back. :: The folks at Matador are celebrating the label's 21st birthday in all kinds of ways. In addition to the insanely expensive (but insanely awesome) party, they're releasing an amazing six-disc box set . And it comes with poker [...]

Image via Wikipedia It is not often that I comment on anything but Indie music here on the Goat, but, this 80's metal rube couldn't help himself. I originally planned on just Tweeting about it and sending out a Facebook update but I couldn't say everything in 140 characters or less, so I figured I'd start the conversation here. I was listening to The Rock And Roll Geek Show (highly recommended) where the host Micheal Butler was doing a track by track review of the new Vince Neil CD "Tattoos [...]

Over a week last summer I power read through Mötley Crüe's 'The Dirt' and Nicki Sixx's 'The Heroin Diaries' books. Undoubtedly the glam rock outfit personified the 80's sex, drugs & rock n roll excesses better than most and on paper this made for scintillating material. I missed their first coming because I was just too [...]

Heavy metal's most celebrated festival returns this year with a pretty loud lineup. Ozzfest, founded by the Prince of Darkness Ozzy Osbourne, will come to six different cities in the U.S this year starting on August 14th in San Bernardino, CA. Other stops on the tour will include Pittsburgh, Chicago, Boston, Hartford, CT and Camden, NJ. Ozzy himself will be one of the headliners along with Mötley Crüe and Rob Halford performing songs from Judas Priest and Fight. There will be two stages at Ozzfest 2010. While the headliners [...]
When The Darkness hit the scene in the 2003, critics began braying about the “hair metal revival.” Well, as it turned out that “revival” was pretty much confined to one band and, really, to one song. Once college kids got sick of shredding their vocal chords trying to hit the “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” high notes, hair metal slunk back to 1984. This is probably a good thing, though it

It's not surprising to see the name John Hughes pop up over at Stuck In The '80s . The filmmaker behind movies like Pretty In Pink , Ferris Bueller's Day Off , and National Lampoon's Vacation is certainly a patron saint of the '80s. His sudden death last autumn truly reminded me how much his films meant to my generation. (Paloma actually gave me a copy of his Weird Science for Valentine's Day) But I was given to momentarily pause when [...]

If you can see the phrase "Girls, girls, girls" and not immediately think of the below song, then, brother, you're a better man than me.

I never went through a metal phase during my high school years (or at any other time, for that matter). Oh, I thought some of it was marvelous, simply smashing stuff, but I was never drawn to an album merely because it was an excuse to make devil horns, offer diabolical instructions when played backwards, or had been endorsed on MTV's Headbangers Ball . During high school, my friend Chris did have a cassette onto one side he had taped the first album by Men Without Hats; side two, Iron Maiden’s The Number [...]
A series of unrelated and entirely coincidental events, non-events, and observations over the past several weeks has left me wondering the darndest thing: where have all the wincingly great songs of underage lust gone? I don’t mean to be controversial here. Fact is, the theme of illicit underage lust and love is one of the most time-honored - and lucrative - in all of rock music. I mean, we always tend to ascribe the 1950s a Puritanical glow, free from the complications and moral ambiguities of modern life, but yet back then such naughty subject matter was [...]

For my entry in the macabre post of the month sweepstakes, it was 40 years ago tonight that Charles Manson sent four of his followers to Cielo Drive in Los Angeles to commit the gruesome murders that were supposed to lay the groundwork for his vision of Helter Skelter. As Manson interpreted it, Helter Skelter would be an apocalyptic war that would arise from tension over racial relations between blacks and whites. In his courtroom testimony, prosecution witness and Family hanger-on Paul Watkins explained how it would happen: “There would be some atrocious murders; that some of [...]
