photos by Robert Altman Oliver Mtukudzi / Fatoumata Diawara Over the last decade Globalfest has presented 21st-century world music as an accelerating fusion, a recombinant free-for-all of local traditions meeting ideas and technologies from afar. It's a realistic view of how musicians work; very few are purists. And some hybrids have grown durable enough to feel like traditions of their own. That's how it was with this year's superb African contingent at Globalfest: Oliver [...]
Carnivalesque folk / punk band Mischief Brew play Underground Arts tonight.  Born out of former Orphans front-man Erik Petersen's basement, the local rockers released Rhapsody for Knives in 2012, an EP comprised of three songs that were not included on 20112s full-length The Stone Operation.  Tickets and information for tonight's 21+ show with Mucca Pazza and ... Benin City's Josh (Rhymes) & Faye (Trombone) Last week saw the long overdue return of the Music Like Dirt sessions with all six members of Benin City proving the music business isn't all glamour by cramming into the smallest, sweatiest rehearsal room in Walthamstow. Thankfully they were as charming as they are talented, running through a sneak preview of single number three " Crush " which superbly combines Star Wars Sith references with deft trombone and sax lines. The session will hopefully be on the site in the next month or [...]

Chicago’s Mucca Pazza marches on, from the steel mill parking lots of Chicago across the nation. myworldmusicfriends.com Make no mistake, Mucca Pazza are a novelty act. No matter how much passion and authenticity the Chicago band introduce to their music, it's hard to get past the point that they are, in fact, a 30-piece marching band. With their third release, the shrewdly titled Safety Fifth, Mucca Pazza inject a much-more playful sound into their mass brass and skins repertoire. Adding a liberal dose of electric guitar ("Boss Taurus"), accordion ("Last Days") and violin ("Tube Sock Tango") has helped allow Safety Fifth to sound more adventurous and sophisticated. Bringing [...]

As we announced back in April, Mucca Pazza has a new album coming out next week called Safety Fifth through Electric Cowbell Records. The band recently released a new video for the track "Boss Taurus", and will be celebrating the release of the new album on June 12th with a sold out show at The Hideout.

Note: I’ll be trickling out some previews for sets that I’ll be sure to catch at the Nelsonville Music Festival  throughout the week.  This is a rough chronological order. Mucca Pazza isn't necessarily a band who's album would end up in my stereo on a Sunday morning, but live... good lord what a treat.  The self-dubbed "circus-punk" clan of 3o or so characters made up of horns and percussion and cheerleaders and who-knows-what else don thrift store band uniforms and make a spectacle of your middle school marching band nightmares.   [...]

This summer will bring the return of the big band sounds of Mucca Pazza . The band is releasing their lastest effort, Safety Fifth on June 12th through Electric Cowbell Records. As the album's sampler below will beautifully illustrate, Mucca Pazza is a wild cross-roads of circus band, marching band, swing band, and garage band. Their performances are epic and sound is one of a kind. You can catch Mucca Pazza at Auditorium Theatre on May 12th as they open for Andrew Bird at 7pm. They will also be performing on the Studs [...]

Lasers and Fast and Shit TGIF, people! Get out there and forget this work week ever happened by having a little fun. We're talking great shows at the Double Door, Empty Bottle and Cole's. Let's get with "it" before they change what "it" was. FRIDAY SWIMSUIT ADDITION Nothing gets you through an immensely long day that never seems to [...]

Mucca Pazza came to Headliners on thursday night, they played the show with another Chicago band Schwinntonation who seemed to be very enthused to be there, proven by the musical lesson we received about intonation, which ended up being the definition for tonality. They used different parts from bikes to execute their soft looped sounds. It was a slow performance and was a strange lead up to the main event. Mucca Pazza starts the show in the middle of the crowd, with their horns and hats running through the audience getting everyone ready for the party that was about to [...]

Mucca Pazza Three welp-I'm-back-in-the-USA-so-le t's-get-to-it reasons to wear sunscreen folks and head over to the old Pritzker Pavilion in Millenium Park this early evening... 1. Nothing says happy birthday America more than a punk rock marching band. No, seriously. Like, a marching band is quintessential Americana at its most shallow. But Mucca Pazza highlight the true rabble and fucked upped-ness that is these here United States. I'm not being political, see. I'm just saying John Phillip Souza is the ideal and Mucca Pazza are the reality. John Phillip [...]

Chicago's massive circus-punk marching band, Mucca Pazza , need your help to bring their upcoming dance film to the big screen. Let's back track a bit first, though. Per the Chicago Reader , local filmmaker Daniele Wilmouth won a grant from the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) last year to fund a 10-minute dance film, titled "Marching Banned," featuring Mucca Pazza. Wilmouth and the band have launched a Kickstarter to raise at least $4,000 for the film's distribution, and, so far, has raised [...]
