Ready for some nostalgia, Ethiopean style? Tezeta means just that in Amharic, which is the national language of ´dear mother Ethiopea´. And it´s a feeling that definitely shines through in the four exotic jewels below. Mulatu Astatqé - Tezeta MP3 Gètatchèw Kassa - Tezeta (slow) MP3 Gètatchèw Kassa - Tezeta (fast) MP3 Mahmoud Ahmed - Tezeta MP3

11) Bell Orchestre - As Seen Through Windows Horn-heavy orchestrated post-rock. Less doom and gloom than some of their contemporaries, it's at times lilting, pastoral, and ethereal. Definitely more cohesive than their previous effort. Seizure city: 12) Dinosaur Jr. - Farm The original Dinosaur Jr. line-up once again prove that they're capable of sounding exactly the same as they did 20 years ago. And who [...]

[This week's Sunday Supplement has been very kindly written by perhaps my oldest (and oldest) reader, Campfires & Battlefields. C&B has emailed me more good music suggestions than pretty much anyone, being the first to alert me to Samamidon, O'Death, Fleet Foxes (okay, we'll forgive him that one) The Felice Brothers and quite a few more, so hopefully we can persuade him to do a monthly column - sort of a Letter From America sort of thing. Thanks C&B.] A few weeks back these hallowed pages were given over to iniquity in [...]

People who know me, know that I am fond of making mixtapes, playlists, etc. If I have been friends with you in the past 12 years or thereabouts - there is a good chance that I've made you a mixtape at some point. And now that I'm starting to get to know our readers, I decided it was time to make a mixtape for Musical Pairings. We'll call it Volume 1. For the first mixtape, I've decided to cast a wide net. I think I can confidently say that I cover a [...]

I've been waiting over a month to write about the third volume of Strut's Inspiration Information series, which features the pairing of Mulatu Astatke and The Heliocentrics , and today's the day that it finally hits shelves. Even more than the previous two volumes, this one has stuck to my ribs and filled me up. Staying consistent with the Series' goals, Strut pairs up two artists, each skilled in their own right, but from different corners of the musical world, to combine their skills for one week in the studio to work [...]

Rivaling Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Franco, Tabu Ley Rochereau, and a handful of others , Mulatu Astatke ranks among the most influential African musicians of all-time. The father of Ethio-Jazz, the Berklee-trained Mulatu, was the first of his countryman to fuse American jazz and funk, with native folk and Coptic Chuch melodies. The leading light of the "Swingin' Addis-"era, Astatke is often acknowledged as the star of the epic Ethiopiques Series, At least, according to filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, who included songs from the Mulatu-arranged and composed, Vol. 4, [...]

What gives Los Angeles music geeks? Mulatu Astatke comes to town to perform a set backed by Cut Chemist and a 15-piece orchestra, and not one of you can post a decent review to further compound my misery. Don't act like I'm not looking at you O-Dub and Roberts. Still bubonic and bleary on this Tuesday A.M., but hopefully clawing back towards some semblance of stability. Tomorrow, something, I promise. In the meantime, allow me to offer up some Mulatu, the legendary Ethiopian jazzman, whom my head remains too hazy to write about adequately. The tunes [...]

Today, an old-school original vs. the new-school remix/remake, but we're not talking about that dreadful BBC covers compilation that just came out, so don't worry... So this Ethiopiques series is pretty darn good if you're into the African vibe... which, as you know, I am. My favorite one of the 3 or 4 I've picked up so far is this one, dedicated almost exclusively to the music of Mulatu Astatke , who was so hood he went to Berklee. I'll bet he's stoked the Sox came back and made [...]
These were a heavy series of CDs that used to come into our second hand record shop from time to time. Early trance music for real. But then, when I decided I better get in and buy some I noticed there were like 18 in the series and I couldn't remember which ones I liked or where to start. So I was pleased when I heard earlier this year that Manteca were doing the hard work for me, and putting together a two CD set. Now I know, it's CD, but seriously, you don't [...]
I think I've found my favourite compilation of the year. A best-of compilation culled from the Ethiopiques series which has 25 releases in the series so far. A best-of a best-of if you will. Francis Falceto is the the compiler of the Ethiopiques series, most of which is taken from the golden era of Ethiopian and Eritrean music from the 60's and 70's. On the eve of the 1974 revolution the long regime of Haile Selassie ended yet launched the 18-year, socialist-military regime known as the Dergue which installed an 18 year continued curfew meaning no nightlife and [...]
