Art by Steve Canaday We're long time fans of the Quarterstick Records band from Michigan known as MULE. We got to see them a bunch and even played a show with them on their first tour at The Court Tavern in New Brunswick NJ when all they had was a casette. Those were the days. Now it would be cool I guess to just release a cassette that no one would be able to listen too. Here's a couple tunes from their first EP with illustrations by Steve Canaday . Nobody plays like [...]
The Lee Boys are in the middle of a tour with Gov't Mule that visited the Orpheum Theatre in Boston last night. Last week saw the release of Testify , the latest Lee Boys album, which came out on Evil Teen, a label co-owned by Gov't Mule guitarist Warren Haynes. Warren sat in with The Lee Boys on I'm On My Way in the opening set before The Lee Boys' Roosevelt Collier came out during Mule's encore to add lap steel to the traditional John The Revelator and the Timothy Matthews / George [...]
On its self-titled debut, the Canadian noise rock band METZ brings some heavy sounds and great riffs, but not a lot of variety or songwriting power. WATCH THE VIDEO

Beginning in 2007, Gov't Mule has come up with a theme for each Halloween show the group has played. It started with Holy Haunted House in which the band covered Led Zeppelin's Houses Of The Holy in its entirety and continued with tributes to Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones and The Who. This year, the Mule will honor the music of Jimi Hendrix at Chicago's Rivera Theatre on October 31. The Mule has covered plenty of Hendrix in the past ranging from Machine Gun to Spanish Castle Magic to Third [...]

Deep Purple: Chapter 5. The Mark II line-up returned with their second release.

Giving your music away for free seems to be a bit of contentious issue these days, personally I think that in a few years time that we will be seeing a lot more bands going down that route. Drunk Mule are one of these artists that are willing to let folk hear their music for no financial reward, a bold move in my eyes. Having caught my attention with their album 'Crash Test Y'self ' which reminds me a bit of the Beta Band/Aliens, I liked their music so much that I decided to ask the band to answer [...]

Warren Haynes returns to Asheville, North Carolina for the 23rd Annual Christmas Jam on December 10 at the Asheville Civic Center. Haynes' Gov't Mule unit will headline the show along with Los Lobos, Bela Fleck and more artists who will be announced soon. Of particular interest is that Phil Lesh will also perform at this year's XMas Jam with a new version of his Phil and Friends project. Joining Lesh will be Furthur band mates Joe Russo and Jeff Chimenti, guitarist Jackie Greene and Warren. We [...]

Been a little sloppy on gettin mixes up over the last couple of weeks because we have been busy parting with hookers and pumpin iron. Anyways this one from new boys Name in Lights will cure your fix, which slides been some deep disco and party grooves to serve up 70 mins of aural pleasure. The boys hail from Stockholm and as well as a forthcoming Under the Shade release have stuff coming out on Wurst and Mule too over the next few months. We can let the mix do the rest of the talking! [...]

While I was awaiting Hurricane Irene's arrival on Saturday I was hipped to a number of fantastic videos featuring members of the Allman Brothers Band and their various projects by fellow NYC-Freak Jarrett Grushka. These clips were uploaded by Mule Army leader Rich Granaas and include rare footage of the one-guitar ABB lineup from 1973 , the trio days of Gov't Mule and four hours and 20 minutes (heady) worth of the legendary One For Woody concert from 2000. [...]
Blues rockers Gov't Mule have announced two NYE shows (12/30 & 31) at the Beacon Theatre in New York. There will be three full sets each night. The band asks they fans for input: We've spent the last few months discussing different theme ideas for this year's New Year's Eve show at The Beacon Theatre in NYC. Of all the ideas that came up, we kept coming back to a theme we have been calling "Get Behind The Mule: Past, Present and Future." As part of Get Behind the Mule we will be looking to [...]
It's a big night. One of your favorite bands of all-time is in a venue small enough to where you can be closer to them than you had ever imagined. You're not up front, but damn it, you're close ... Continue reading "Concert Foul No. 4: The Front Row Beer Mule" >
Chicago-based Go Long Mule have closer ties with American rock, country, and folk than they do with the Windy City. Describing themselves elsewhere as “folk n’ roll”, their debut album, Kissing the Gunner's Daughter , sounds a little bit like Noah and the Whale at times. “Sailor”, with its nice skiffle beat-led track and Johnny Cash-style bass line, is one of the better tracks, along with “Rattles”, which is similar in tone and tempo, although it loses some of the quality of the earlier track. It’s on “Ghosts”, though, that Go Long Mule shine the [...]
The most sun-drenched podcast of the season comes courtesy of Ivory Coast-native, Germany-based producer Mr Raoul K. Those of you who've been reading us for a while will no doubt remember that back in 072 Lelo and Mikhail were all about his sound, because it truly stood out from the minimal mass thanks to its [...]

The hardest working man in the scene, Warren Haynes, told his fans a long time ago that Gov't Mule would be put on the backburner in 2011 while he hit the road with his Warren Haynes Band in support of Man In Motion. Warren has stayed true to his word as Mule performances this year have been kept to two sets at last month's Mountain Jam and a handful at shows in Jamaica at the beginning of 2011 as part of Island Exodus. Those missing the hard rocking quartet will be happy to know that Gov't Mule will [...]

So what the Blues got to do with it? I've been watching Treme on the cable and reading Keith Richard's autobiography and getting back into the roots of american rocknroll and funk for that matter for the past couples year and I realize I don't know shit. So much music so little time to live and breath it like so many before. Modern music as we know it would not exist if it's weren't for the blues. Took me a long to realize this. The army gave folks in the south band instruments and they [...]

Three Tom-Skilling-is-a-dope reasons to wear a raincoat or a sleeveless t-shirt or God knows what and head over to the Empty Bottle tonight... 1. A curated show! Not only that but curator Donnie Biggins has an alias, Harmonica Dunn. Super. What's he got for us? How's about Chicago's Go Long Mule . Man, this town has some good country and Americana and Go Long Mule are a big cog in that machine. These kids take from all kinds of American music [...]

EchoWants Her VoiceBack has been described as ‘quirky’ folk rock with pop overtones. Indeed the band enjoys experimenting with a folky flavour of tunes to provide a repertoire of original songs based on myths, stories and love sagas gone terribly wrong. The band is composed of Eleni Skarpari (vocals, guitar) and Labrini Grigoriadou (guitar). The girls’ (once even referred to as a ‘hybrid’) diverse musical backgrounds and similar fascination with Greek myth yieldedan instant chemistry, which led to theproduction of their first song “Unfortunate Day”, ablues/rock tunedescribing Echo’s love for Narcissus, with [...]
