I recently received the debut album from New York City's Murder Mystery . While Are You Ready for the Heartache Cause Here it Comes didn't change my life in any way...it did provide 32 minutes of enjoyable listening. I was a little puzzled after reading their bio and press reviews and not seeing a single reference to Stephen Merritt or Magnet Fields. Maybe it's too obvious? Listen to their song "Love Astronaut" and tell me if it wouldn't fit perfectly on 69 Love Songs . Regardless, I like it and hope you do too. [...]
For acts in their infancy, so to speak, their merch table is what makes or breaks a tour. Buy the shirts and posters and all the cool stuff in front of th...

Last year I posted a few words on the EP by NY quartet Murder Mystery and now that the band has released their debut album, it's time to post a few more. The name of the 12 track album is Are You Ready for the Heartache Cause Here it Comes and perhaps it's a bit on the short side with a running time of just 33 minutes. It seems like every time I open my e-mail these days I get news on some awesome new indie-pop band. My cup runneth over with handclaps! Anyway the latest is a New York band called Murder Mystery. Their début album Are You Ready for the Heartache Cause Here it Comes has all the indie-pop trappings of a Mates of State or Bishop Allen along with a healthy dose of Buddy Holly (especially check out What My Baby Said). Half of the band is brother and sister team Jeremy Coleman (vocals, guitar) and Laura Coleman (drums, vocals). The other less related [...]

We've been everywhere lately. We eulogized one Kurt Vonnegut . There was our continuing coverage of the massacre at Virginia Tech, and the place of art therein. I am not a NRA nut, and I used to be strongly in favor of gun control, but using this incident as a pretext for gun control is absurd. (I was in favor of gun control before I realized that everyone dies, eventually. After that, I was like, What's the point?) We talk about all the [...]
