To coincide with the release of their upcoming Faustian Echoes EP, the mighty Agalloch have announced a slew of summer dates spanning across the U.S., boasting a 90-120 minute headlining slot and a setlist that will vary by show. Check below for a press release from the band that includes tour dates, opening acts, and ...

As stated on part one of the results. I guess I wasn't very specific on this category. This was included for anyone who plays the acoustic guitar. With the votes tallied up. Narrowed it down with the Top 5 plus three honorable mentions. So here are the results for Hottest Guitarists. Hopefully for next year, I will be prepared on who should be nominated and have more females added. Sorry if I couldn't find the right photos. HOTTEST GUITARISTS: [...]

After Paper Beat Scissors ' set, I stayed to see Musk Ox play. They played a nice intimate set. Previewed tracks on an upcoming album which drops in the fall. Here are the rest of the photos. Here is a short video I took off from [...]

Olenka and the Autumn Lover and Musk Ox played a lovely intimate show at Ottawa's Mercury Lounge . The show was presented by Blackbox Concert Series . I really love the music of Olenka and the Autumn Lovers. Since it was fall time, this couldn't come at a right time. The show started off with Ottawa's Musk Ox. This time he was solo. It was a very mellow set. Very calm and relaxing. [...]

After seeing Shawn Clarke at Umi Cafe on September 14, 2011. It was a short walk up to Raw Sugar Cafe . Playing there was Cousins from Halifax. They haven't played Ottawa since April 20, 2010 . The band (or duo) is on a September tour and Ottawa was the first stop. Opening up the show was Ottawa's Musk Ox . It was a nice mellow set. Filled with new tracks and nice [...]

Jessica Eaton Though they should be - and probably are - at work on their next album, a follow-up to last year's The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night , Montreal's Besnard Lakes have put together a little something something that will not only slake their fans' appetite for some new outer space-scale rock, but give them an excuse to get out of the studio and back on the road for a spell. On September 20, they'll release You Lived In the City , a new 123 EP that [...]

If anyone in Ottawa will be going down to Toronto for New Year's Eve, check out this event . I'd go in an instant but its going to be hard finding a place to stay. Anyone mind doing a roadtrip on NYE? Of the times I have been to Toronto, this is one of a few venues should have checked out. It would be cool to check out this venue. As part of the Tranzac ongoing fundraising campaign to keep the place running. They will be holding a show with a [...]

Forgot to do a writeup for this Bands Undone session with Musk Ox . Was the same day as Bahamas and of course the day where Canada won gold in Men's Olympics Hockey. I didn't take any photos due the camera being used as a videocamera. But I got my friend Emily to interview Musk Ox. Listen to the interview . Check out these videos from it.
You don't really see split singles as much as fans would like, but even among those that do get released this one is unique. Four indie bands, hailing from Toronto and Kingston, have teamed up for a two song 7" single. The Gertrudes, Bruce Peninsula, Muskox, and PS I Love You will be releasing "Shanty Song/Sailor" in a limited edition available at the Apple Crisp Music Festival in Kingston (Mar

This is the third installment of my interview series with Toronto music scenesters. Read the first (with Ben Mueller-Heaslip) and second (with Randal Ball) ones . Mike Smith is nearly-ubiquitous in Toronto's music community. Find him at Soundscapes most days, and performing with his main band, Muskox , as well as appearing and recording with a slew of others. In 2009 Muskox put out its fourth EP, titled 5 Pieces (Standard Form). You can pick up [...]

It was a nice Friday evening for instrumental music. Playing at the Raw Sugar Cafe were: Ferris Wheel Musk Ox I've seen Musk Ox alot when they play live in Ottawa. So they need no introduction. Just that their set is always amazing with a blend of instrumental experimental music. As Nathanaël Larochette [...]

It was a nice crowded evening at Raw Sugar Cafe on December 20th. Playing at the show were: Hmmm Musk Ox Gutstrings (didn't see but here is a photo during their soundcheck) Nice to see people there who I [...]

The number of releases waiting to be covered here on herohill is becoming as overwhelming as one of those inbox/outbox cartoons from back in the day. Throw in the fact I'm trying to refocus my thoughts for Polaris this weekend isn't helping. So in an effort to talk about a few more releases that I've been digging on lately, you get a nice mailbag. Unlike Bill Simmons, I'll try not to reuse jokes, talk about Vegas or mention Rocky or Kimmel. Right out of the gate, we have one [...]

Back of liner notes Musk Ox comes advertised as "neofolk." This throws me, as my admittedly limited understanding of the term runs to Current 93 and menacing stuff on Cold Spring Records. But Wikipedia includes Agalloch under "neofolk," and Musk Ox recalls that band's acoustic side. So, terminology aside, campfire singalongs aren't at issue. Instead, pristinely picked acoustic guitars (think Nick Drake) meander through settings of piano, cello, wind instruments, and nature sounds (e.g., chirping crickets). [...]
Frankly, I find it shocking the website has been up for over a week, and this is my first music post. I'd planned to write posts about last weekend's Rock n' Roll Anniversary , Singing Lamb Launch , and Out of This Spark shows, but the update, and the new Event Calendar (move your mouse over it, why dontcha, and see what happens!) ate up all my waking time. So the next two days are going to be all about the music, starting with Wombat Wednesdays . (That's Basement [...]
I'm not really sure how the entirely acoustic music peddled by Ottawa's Musk Ox could be considered metal... but yet, somehow, it unmistakably is. Musk Ox, whose self-titled Absurdist Records debut drops January 19th, beg the age-old question of what actually defines metal. Is it distorted guitars? If you answered "yes" then you'd have to [...]
