a couple months back i was speaking w a beloved artist of a lot of us, who has been feature on here more than a few times, regarding cory branan . i had stated that i only really like about a quarter of his songs, at this point said artist called me crazy or something maybe worse, actually it was worse, but it was all in good fun. i was only being honest, and judging the man and his music by what i have heard up until that point. i should also mention, that my view of his music [...]

[mp3] Cory Branan: "Bad Man" " Cory Branan 's got an evil streak / and a way with words that'll bring you to your knees"... Lucero's Ben Nichols wrote in "Tears Don't Matter Much" back in 2003. We haven't heard from Cory much since his last release 12 Songs , which came out three years later in 2006. We loved him in Nashville during a recent visit, and patiently waited for some news from this talented songwriter. Just recently, Bloodshot gave word his new album Mutt [...]

Mutts is gearing up for a big year that includes the release of a double LP this summer. Their year began by being named The Deli's emerging artist of the 2011, and this Thursday, April 12th, they will be headlining our showcase at The Beat Kitchen. Recently Mike Maimome, Bob Buckstaff, & Chris Pagnani were kind enough to answer a few of my questions. You can read my interview with the band here . Mutts will be headlining The Deli's emerging artists showcase at Beat Kitchen this Thursday, April 12th with [...]

And now three reasons to celebrate Pulaski Day by rocking out at Schubas tonight... 1. Another month, another month-long residency at Schubas that features an up-and-coming Chicago act. Every Monday in March brings indie rockers The Kickback to the Lakeview bar. I really dug the Kickback's 2010 EP, Great Self Love , as it showcased a versatile band with the chops to boot. On it, the band crafted tight, melodic pop songs that still featured quite a bit of edge via alt-rock leaning guitars [...]

Consequence of Sound is proud to present The Kickback' s month-long residency at Chicago's Schubas Tavern. Each Monday in March, the South Dakota-turned Chicago rockers will perform alongside an exciting new bill, fully stocked with special guests chosen by both the band and Consequence of Sound . The residency kicks off Monday, March 5th at 8 p.m., and features local heroes Mutts and Psychic Twin . Tickets are currently priced at $6 and available online . This show is 18+. Further bills for March 12th, 19th, and the 26th will [...]
Monday Afternoon Quick Fix runs every Monday afternoon to showcase the best of Chicago music news, views and stories from around the interwebs and blogosphere that we might have missed. • WBEZ's Jim DeRogatis has the scoop on the Cook County Board of Commissioner's recent move to grab control over the amusement tax waiver provided to Lollapalooza . The county estimates that the annual summer festival's tax exemption adds up to approximately $350,000 a year to the county alone. • 'Soul Train' creator Don Cornelius tragically passed away last week [...]

Pray For Rain by Mutts Chicago's Mutts have been called a cross between Tom Waits and Nirvana...while I can hear the Tom Waits comparison, I think the band's music is sounds closer to 70's blues-rock though the band can quickly switch from a psychedelic head-nodder with a pulsing bass and drums beat to a mellow number driven by an acoustic piano and Mike Maimone's vocals. Regardless, this is great stuff and the inability to put an exact label on the band's music is a complement to their [...]

1. There's nothing wrong with tight and polished pop-rock. Case in point is Chicago's Wally Dogger , who do that quite well. The guitars are crisp, the drums and bass are just punchy enough without intruding on their vocals that balance between melodic sweetness and a Pavement-like sarcastic angst. At times, they indulge in adolescent wordplay ("Tramp Stamp"), but their tongue in cheek delivery makes it work. LISTEN: "Julie" 2. Local duo Pinto & the Bean are difficult to pin [...]

Mutts - Pray For Rain Mutts is a three-piece rock outfit out of Chicago, who just released their first LP, Pray For Rain . After several spins, it's clear that the band is appropriately named. Bits of heavy metal, blues, rag time and grunge mark this album, which was released in mid-December. Like a good mutt, Mutts exhibits the best characteristics of these genres and seem to revel in their eclectic influences. The band is led by Mike Maimone (vocals, keys) and [...]

As usual for me, I spent the entire month of December posting holiday tunes. During that time a bunch of music was sent my way, but I haven't had a chance to pass any of it on - until now. Here's a quick round up of some of the best new songs that have been hanging out in my in box for the past month. Mutts' Pray For Rain has been growing on me more with each listen. I posted one track of theirs on my year-end [...]

Happy New Year! What better way to start than with a new band. A good new band. The Mutts . They are a no-holds-barred rock band from Chicago melding growled vocals with dirty blues inspired riffs and a righteous anger that somehow reminds us of the Drive-By Truckers playing with MC5 and fronted by Tom Waits . Check out the excellent fuzzed up, whiskey drenched Throwback and the hypnotically menacing Jessy - a guaranteed kill or cure for that New Year's Eve [...]

Mutts Three hike-up-your-long-johns-becaus e-it's-Thursday reasons to head over to Subterranean tonight... 1. Mike Maimone, Mutts ' mastermind, has been kicking around the Chicago scene for a while playing with groups such as Company of Thieves, Bailiff, Lying Delilah and Hollus - just to name a few. With all that in mind, it's almost hard to believe organ-heavy blues rockers Mutts are only celebrating the release of its first full-length ( Praying for Rain ) now. Anchored by Maimone's dramatic, rough and tumble vocals, Mutts cut loose on [...]

Born in a puddle of tap beer in a 15th Street Milwaukee basement, R. Mutt has been playing our brand of rock and roll in dingy bars and small clubs around the upper Midwest since 1988. To capture the sound we have honed at live shows we chose to record 2011's Leash on Life by transforming our basement rehearsal space into a DIY recording studio. Read more »

Regular readers of the site will be aware that my musical tastes cross into a range of genres and like a lot of folks the ebb and flow of what I listen too relates directly to my prevailing mood - which in truth is about as random as hitting the shuffle button. Off the back of a restless night following a stressed out few days I'm sat at my 'desk' catching up on email trying to filter out of the Beat Surrender mailbox some tasty tunes to share and I come across a message from Jim who plays [...]

Pelican Three cheers for the weekend! Lot's of great acts will descend on our many rad venues including Twin Shadow at Lincoln Hall , Pelican at The Empty Bottle and much more. when i get packages in the mail, i rarely get excited, and an even a rarer event is that i am impressed with whatever was sent my way. i received a package about a week ago from the milwaukee band r. mutt and honestly wasnt expecting much at all. included in said package was a t-shirt, which i could always use, and a copy of their new record, leash on life, which i figured would end up in the never been listened to section of the closet. as you have probably figured out by now, i did listen [...]
