Who knew Sweden and Germany could work together so well? Netwerk Records, 2013 7.0 / 10 Oh boy, here is a duo to look out for. Does anyone remember "12343 by Feist? Well, BOY...
BOY cast a spell over the audience at the Swedish American Hall in San Francisco.
The definitely non-boy Valeska Steiner and Sonja Glass are BOY , a Hamburg-based duo armed with a bundle of smart, often breezy alt-pop songs on their well-received debut album Mutual Friends , already released in Europe and the U.K. and now hitting the U.S. this week. After meeting up at music workshop in Hamburg, Steiner and Glass began writing and performing together and then, over a nearly two and half year period, laying down tracks in Berlin at the home studio of producer and multi-instrumentalist Philipp Steinke. "We made about 10 versions of most [...]
Without sounding horribly repetitive, BOY have brought something new to the indie singer-songwriter world, and it's throwing a wonderfully incandescent sound to the genre.
Hamburg-based duo BOY has made quite an impact in their native Germany and Switzerland, and the duo is picking loads of fanfare via the Internet. Their video for the song, "Little Numbers" has surpassed 6 million YouTube views. Now the duo has marked North America as their next target. [...]

UPDATE: BOY have been signed to Nettwerk with an early 2013 release scheduled for the debut. From our post in April: The definitely non-boy Valeska Steiner and Sonja Glass are BOY , a Hamburg-based duo armed with a bundle of smart, often breezy alt-pop songs on their well-received debut album Mutual Friends , released last fall in Germany and Switzerland and the U.K. this past June. I love when people introduce me to new music especially when it's something I wouldn't normally find on my own. I heard Boy for the first time last week in Barcelona and they came very recommended by a great friend. Valeska Steiner & Sonja Glass (Hamburg, Zurich, Sc) are absolutely adorable and gorgeous, their music is as pleasant as their looks. Upon some research I discovered they're label mates with Fujiya & Miyagi, Gang of Four, and Metric - all part of the Groenland Records fam. Yes, their last album Mutual Friends came out [...]

The circle of friends in the band Mutual Friends has now grown to 6 members and on the new album "A Day In a Jar" they show us what they can accomplis together. If you listened to the earlier album "The Cabin", which I wrote about before, you will recognize the Americana-vibing style, where the new members add to the arrangements with new instruments. First of all it's the violin that gives a beautiful, melancholic folk feeling to the songs. Their best album so far I think. You can listen to their music on Spotify and [...]

Image source: Facebook BOY consists of Valeska Steiner and Sonja Glass, two girls haling from Hamburg and Zürich. Like the band Girls (who is all boys), they don't actually representing the gender in their name. While I don't know much about the duo (do you know how hard it is to search Boy + band without an onslaught of Justin Beiber and One Direction search results?), I do know they are worth your listening time. Catchy melodies and lovely [...]

Video: BOY - “Skin (acoustic version)” BOY is the duo of Valeska Steiner & Sonja Glass, two young women making a ton of noise and hailing from Zurich/Munich, and they’re prepping a debut album of indie pop numbers quite like the track “Skin” above, only not acoustic. To get a feel for the girls outside of the acoustic nature of the video, check their other stuff out on the Web for sure and keep watch for the lovely pair on tour in Germany (and hopefully the world soon). Godspeed!

Tweet Today I’m introducing you to a duet called BOY . If you already gave these two girls a listen, forgive me, but I must talk about them a little bit. Valeska Steiner and Sonja Glass . Those are the names of these two girls who (and we don’t know why) decided to call themselves BOY . Maybe because they’re way too pretty and attract any kind of boy. Maybe because they’re way too pretty [...]

The duo Mutual Friends released the album "The Cabin" in the autumn. 10 beautiful tracks with folk music, americana on the border to country, acoustic and coloured with mandolin, banjo and harmonica. The vocals feel very special with a dark voice that sort of marks the entire atmosphere of the music and gives it a more mature feeling, like if Johnny Cash would join in anytime, even if the style maybe lies more in outskirts of his territories. You can listen to "The Cabin" on Spotify . I'm afraid that I haven't found [...]
Mondays are for eating ice cream even though it's too cold out. BAnanas Symphony - 'Holidaze' (that capital A is not a typo btw) King Koyote - 'Ghouls' Mutual Friends - 'Memory Lane' Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra's - 'Gift Basket'

I think it's great that this year's version of Jose Gonzalez is The Tallest Man On Earth. Both artists deserved the small amount of fame and adulation they received. But at the same time I'm annoyed that we only have room in our hearts for one Swedish folk/roots act at a time. I'm lucky that I don't have any such restriction and that I can write about the new record The Cabin from Mutual Friends. "Dressed Up For Halloween" starts out as a folk song powered by banjo and harmonica. But [...]
