Moodgadget is an electronic music label that was founded in Ann Arbor, MI in 2004. They are currently based out of Brooklyn and LA and have an affiliation with Ghostly International. I have been on their mailing list for a while, and wrote about their first release a few years back. They offer a broad selection of styles on their roster, and I like that variety. Today's post highlights it with
"Nausican" really exemplifies the strength of sparsity in music - Mux Mool's instrumental hip hop centers around four or five impeccably tweaked textures, as opposed to, say, twelve muddled ones fighting for space. A gypsy-esque vocal trill loops to becomes the exotic backdrop behind a classic, authoritative drum beat, while discretely detuned keys fluctuate in the empty space. Like the cleanest of DJ Shadow tracks, there isn't anything fancy here - just a thoroughly entrancing beat that rides the strength of superhuman attention to detail. Former Minneapolis artist/producer Mux Mool made the move to Brooklyn last fall and is prepping the follow-up to his Drum ep which had the highly successful track "Night Court" and appeared on the Ghostly-Adult Swim compilation Ghostly Swim . Last year Butter Team turned us onto the Ghostly Swim comp (which you can read more about here ). One of my favorite artists on that comp was NYC's Mux Mool with his track "Night Court". I love Radiohead and I also love the way they seem to be able to command some pretty decent remixes too. This one in particular is another remix of the ever-popular "Reckoner" track from "In Rainbows". The origin possibly has something to do with the remix competition Radio head have been running of this track.
