I dislike Interpol. Always did. Which is not to say I didn't like some of their songs. Hard to resist, the first album anyway. They stole directly from good sources and executed with studied competence. I guess it was the suits and haircuts and smug, self-serious posturing that put me off. Seemed a little heavy-handed for what was essentially a covers band. Then they went away. And then I hear a band like this and I hate them all over again. Though unfortunately-named, this long-running Cleveland act spent a bunch of unheralded years doing solid, angsty basement [...]

Things I learned this weekend: Apparently it's grounds for an ass-kicking when you're black-out drunk at a bar and you tell a girl her boyfriend is "limp dicked" and ask her if you can "put a little baby in your tum tum." Good thing I was in a large group of people who would have [...]

Drive is a sonically sound road trip rock documentary with David Gedge and his band The Wedding Present touring North America way back in 2005 which was Directed & Edited by Steve Stone and his company Third Hand Films whom I've known the better part of 20 years! Can't believe it. Anyway, the story goes that Steve sent Gedger an email when he heard they were planning on coming to America and he asked him if he'd be interested in taping some of the shows. After a bunch of red tape, [...]

At the foot of Niagara Falls lies a museum and a mystery. The barrel museum shows a proud display of the "barrels," --none of which are really conventional barrels-- that crazed stuntmen used in a usually vain attempt to ride for glory over the roaring rapids of Niagara Falls. Niagara is split into two falls. On one side of Goat Island is American Falls. It's the shorter of the two by a few feet. But the bottom is lined with rocks. Riding over it in a barrel would not be a crapshoot. It would be straight suicide. [...]

COBRA VERDE HQ: Cleveland, Ohio Website: MySpace ; website The Story: Formed from the ashes of legendary '80s Cle rockers Death of Samantha (Doug Gillard, of this post, was guitarist in that band), Cobra Verde -- featuring DoS vocalist John Petkovic, Gillard and drummer Dave Swanson -- formed in 1992. Although Petkovic remains the last original member, the line-up changes haven't changed CV's timeless formula: swaggering rock & roll based around glam, punk and loose-limbed garage. [...]
Back before the Day Party became the norm, SXSW attendees were forced to either sleep till a civilized hour, go enjoy a relaxing, delicious lunch somewhere in Austin other than near the convention center or, heaven forbid, attend a Panel Discussion. I know what you're thinking. Panel Discussion, what's that? It's where a handful of people in the industry get free food and are then put in front of an audience of their peers to talk about a particular topic like "Merch Table of Contents," "Fans are Suckers," or "I'm OK, You're OK: The Industry's Still Rockin'!" [...]

Taking a cue from The Onion's Random Rules feature, I selected these songs for this Listening Post after "Coat of Armor" by My Dad is Dead caught my ear when it popped up in iTunes via shuffle mode.
