Northampton quartet My First Tooth have announced a headline tour for September and along with the news are giving album track Twilight Theatre away as a free download. This has all the hallmarks of modern folk but with its expressive beat and stirring violin its a lot more enigmatic than your usual brand of pop-driven folk music. The vocals, infused with accent, are surprisingly soft and even when they become more impassioned as the song draws on, there's still an incredibly dreamy quality to them. My First Tooth - [...]
Third in the series of our new weekly feature which takes a look at some of our favourite songs of the week. After the blazing sun of the first day, Wychwood wakes up to grey skies and blustering winds. This, however, doesn't alter the festival atmosphere as thousands of revellers are roaming the site looking for something decent for breakfast. Once the distress at paying an hour's wages on a burger has subsided, it's time to find some more great music. Opening the Main Stage are the hotly-tipped My First Tooth . Their current release, 'Territories', has seen rave reviews from the likes of the Fly and The 405. [...]

Back in April we were in attendance for the Glastonbury Festival's Emerging Talent Competition final. As a judge for the competition, we'd been involved in crafting the shortlist of acts for the event and it was a real pleasure to see, hear and meet the bands that had made it through. One of our favourites was My First Tooth , a pop-folk (or nu-folk if you're that way inclined) four-piece, who are not only a lot of fun, but also perform more on-stage instrument exchanges than other any other band I've ever seen. Worth mentioning [...]

Words: Saam Das April's been a bit of a ridiculous month for the singles round up with Record Store Day dominating proceedings. Several special, limited edition singles came out on April 16th this year and well, it'd be a nightmare going through all of those on top of my bursting lists of regular singles. So I might have missed the odd amazing single but here's a selection of very good ones anyway. Auction - 'Statues' [...]

This week looks pretty ace. Pretty sure a good few of these will be on quite a lot of end of year lists. Could be tough on the wallet/purse though. Week beginning April 11: Mazes – A Thousand Heys ( FatCat ) Mazes - Bowie Knives Panda Bear – Tomboy ( Paw Tracks ) Metronomy – English Reivere ( Because ) [...]

We meant to write about this earlier in the week, but got a bit carried away in all the Queen Of Hearts excitement. Musically Queen Of Hearts and My First Tooth are a world away, but they do have one thing in common: being fucking amazing. We're not the only ones to think so: "A full-on blast of raucous folk-pop that's all hoedown and no slowdown" - The Word "All things permitting, this lot should be a force to be reckoned with soon. In an [...]
After all the effort, the long hours, the selection of judges, the we're finally on the eve of the final of the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition 2011. Eight acts will battle it out i n front of a live audience at The Pilton Working Men's Club, Shepton Mallet. Sue Wheeler, the Glastonbury Festival ETC Co-ordinator has taken some time out from the frantic arrangements for this important event in the music calendar to tell the Devil about her favourite Glastonbury memory, her fantasy Glastonbury line-up and her plans for [...]

Playing gigs as a folk act must be the worst. You're inevitably on first, unless you're playing an acoustic all-dayer and, moree often than not, you have no instrument loud enough to drown out the heckling during your softer songs. My First Tooth probably have their fair share of discouraging gig stories to tell - after all, they have played hundreds of shows since 2007, many of which saw them take to the stafe as a duo. The spine of guitarist, singer and movie buff Ross Marie Witt and violinist and fellow singer Sophie Galpin has since been [...]

One of the ways in which In The City wins hands down against other multi gig urban festivals is in terms of ease and convenience. All of the venues are within a stone's throw of each other and attendance numbers are such that there didn't appear to be any queues to get into any shows, meaning that gig-hopping was incredibly simple. A lunchtime start welcomed a Brilliant Artists Booking Agency showcase at the Night & Day Café – a venue that [...]

The days have got longer, and the sun is starting to glisten through the trees making this perfect timing for the latest instalment of Summer days through the folkish haze (previously vols 1 and 2 ). As with all our mixtapes here on TBW, there are some bands you may know and others you wish you did - and all perfectly accompanied by a jug of Pimms... Big shout outs to the wonderful folk at Young & Lost , Song, by Toad , and For Folks Sake for pushing [...]
I find it difficult to be impartial about a group who have named themselves after the best left-back football has ever known. Screaming Maldini clearly know world class when they see it parading around a football pitch in a red and black striped shirt. However, do they have the expertise to compare with the majesty [...]
Northampton's premiere purveyors of indie-folk My First Tooth returned with a consolidated lineup and the release 4-track EP 'Margaret Yen' last month. Singer-songwriter Ross Witt was officially joined by violinist Sophie Galpin meaning that the guitar and violin interplay seen on the 'My First Tooth And the Rubies' EP has gained further prominence. With a full length [...]

Hmmm, I feel I should issue an Angst-Free Warning when reviewing this. It's not saccharine by any stretch, but there is a carefree, whimsical side to their essentially acoustic pop which gives this an EP a cheerfully breezy air, even when the songs themselves are sad. I've been sitting on this for ages trying to make up my mind whether or not that cheeriness was a little too much for me, but I don't think it is. It's taken me a while to adjust to the sound, but I like this EP, particularly the sprightly violin work, which [...]
LETTING EMERGING ARTISTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVESAnother addition to swell a burdgeoning indie-folk scene, Northampton based boy-girl duo My First Tooth ply a trade in melodic acoustic anthems that has seen them tour with the likes of Noah and the Whale, Johnny Flynn and label mate Sam Issac.Ross took the time to answer a few questions; What's the least accurate description of your music that you've
