Chicago's artfully embellished trio My Gold Mask deliver style, panache, and otherworldy grooves with eerie ease. My Gold Mask, featuring demure guitarist Jack Armondo and nimble percussionist-cum-crooner Gretta Rochelle, now joined by drummer James Andrew, produce a rare breed of alchemical music that dumps the notion of simple genres. Behind the door of their soundscapes, they conjure a post-punk arthouse cabaret combining elements of popular and avant-garde traditions from Diamanda Galas and Jarboe to Glass Candy and Chromatics that revel in operatic surges and deconstructed cultural fare with flair. Their new...

My Gold Mask made the pilgrimage to SXSW from their Chicago home-base, and the Sound Dessert Day Party was their first gig stop. The set was dedicated to a number of new songs from Leave Me Midnight , the band's second full-length album released a month prior. There's also a new face behind the mask - drummer James Andrew makes the duo now a trio. The result? A fuller live sound and freedom for lead singer Gretta Rochelle to move around on stage. I've seen My Gold Mask live a few times [...]

Photo by Drew Reynolds Spring forth everyone! Hopefully this week's snow was the last big one we'll get before the warmth returns, and god knows we could use it. Anyway, don't forget to set your clocks forward an hour on Saturday after you stumble home from one of the many great shows going on this weekend. We're talking My Gold Mask's album release party at Schubas, The Hideout's Annual SXSW Send-Off , So Cow at the Burlington and more. Buckle up... [...]

After a very solid duo of EPs in 2010, which included "A Thousand Voices, arguably the band's most popular release because of the catchy noir rock of "Violet Eyes," My Gold Mask is back with Leave Me Midnight . This time around the duo of guitarist Jack Armondo and percussionist slash howler Gretta Rochelle is joined by another drummer, James Andrew, on occasion, but the majority of "Leave Me Midnight" finds My Gold Mask in the same darkened realm that embodied their most recent records. And though they never really reach another "Violet Eyes" apex on [...]

My Gold Mask have released a video for their track "Burn Like The Sun". The track appears on their latest album Leave Me Midnight . My Gold Mask are heading down to SXSW this year, but before they go you can catch them at Schubas on March 9th.

If I were to write this week's rundown of new releases without mentioning Beat Radio 's Hard Times, Go! , I'd probably have a few friends upset with me (and I'm not talking about people in the band even!), so let's get that one out of the way first, shall we? And speaking of friends who are in bands, we must also mention records from Dan Friel , My Gold Mask , and Miracles of Modern Science . Well, so far this week's column feels like it's all about who you know, so how about [...]

The release date for the latest My Gold Mask album Leave Me Midnight is quickly approaching (February 19th to be exact) and I couldn't be more excited. Their sound is clearly in the same vein as bands like Crystal Castles, but with not quite as much heavy ass synth and more of a focus on quality vocal delivery. Prior to the upcoming release date in a couple of weeks, the band have offered this new song "Burn Like the Sun" to quench your thirst for lady pop. Hopefully you'll see why I can't wait for this release [...]

My Gold Mask has revealed “Burn Like The Sun”, the first track from their upcoming album, Leave Me Midnight . Gretta Rochelle's voice echoes and warbles on the synth-pop track as she wails, "my whole body's shaking, watching it all come undone, this world that we're breaking". A warning about global warming? Perhaps. A burning song? Sure is.
