(photo by Ryan Kirlin and Jack Armondo) If you're like us, you love The Hood Internet 's take on pretty much everything they've attempted to tackle. And, if you're like us even more, you've been itching for anything new you could put your mitts on from the dastardly duo of My Gold Mask . And so it's fitting that each of these windy city sets would somehow see fit to find each other for what turns out to be one of our favorite remixes/treatments/mash-ups. The Hood Internet take bits and pieces from [...]

one of the most exciting discoveries of 2009 has been the emergence of Chicago's My Gold Mask as a frotnrunner in the output of unique artpoprock. We raved about the duo a couple months ago , and now, our favorite song by them has been tweaked by another set of kids we admire a ton, The Hood Internet . Gretta and Jack of My Gold Mask completely STOLE my heart when I first let their song, Bitches, into my ears and life. With a dark [...]

Goodness - three months and a lot of water have passed since the release of My Gold Mask's album, which you may recall, was bloody excellent. Gretta & Jack have done a flurry of gigs, all of which I've missed due to the small impedance of the Atlantic Ocean... but likely next year, I'll come to the mountain - I'd certainly love to see 'em play live. Anyway, this isn't (entirely) a trip down recent memory lane, being prompted by a rather dandy remix of MGM's Bitches, neatly combined with bits of Roxy Music's 'Love Is The Drug'... [...]

The Hood Internet hooked My Gold Mask up with some Roxy Music for their "Bitches." Love Roxy Music but like the original it is the siren like chanting that wins over the ears. My Gold Mask - "Bitches" (The Hood Internet Remix - feat. Roxy Music) Posted the original back in March - check it if you missed it. Or check out their release on Bandcamp .
Here's some new shit to listen to while you're grilling fireworks this weekend. Should be noted that these tracks aren't strictly Chicago, just one part each. I had a week, at the end of May, where I scheduled myself to go to six gigs. Yeah, that was both exciting and scary and, it turns out, un-do-able. The end result was: one gig I went to on the wrong night and got lost-missing it, one night I had to make a Sophie's choice and think I picked the right one, one night I drove 3 hours to see The Hazards of Love performed live and I'll never forget it, and by Sunday I came down with the worst cold/flu thing that I was grounded for [...]

You'll never know what treasures will find their way into your mailbox. Granted, my junk mail folder is overwhelmed by all sorts of people soliciting for cheap drugs, heirlooms of devout Christians in faraway countries just waiting to be picked up and inquiries into my anatomy and if I'm pleased with it. Thankfully, my inbox is spared of all this and I can find myself lucky enough to be introduced into some really unique works of art. With my newly acquired (virtual) horse (still looking for a name, I'd appreciate some suggestions), I can finally dedicate the time [...]

Let me introduce to you a sweet new band from Chicago, My Gold Mask. What started out as a friendly home recording experiment, My Gold Mask just released their first collection of songs which are now available for digital download and/or on cassette. The duo [Gretta Rochelle and Jack Armondo] create beautiful [yet dark] music out of quiet guitar and solid, pounding drums. A lot of the songs are rounded out by Gretta's powerful voice which demands attention as it flutters in from the distance. I highly recommend grabbing the digital download . And [...]

A recent recommendation from the Pasta Primavera guys, and it's been on repeat all weekend. My Gold Mask are the duo of Gretta Rochella and Jack Armondo out of Chicago. People are quick to pull the Karen O (YYYs) and Alison Mosshart (The Kills) parallels. I get it, but I feel a stronger Ella Fitzgerald vibe from Rochella's beautiful vibrato. Well, Fitzgerald that just mainlined reverb. Dark, dreamy soundscapes are bewitchingly painted as Armondo and Rochella are so complementary together. By the way, they are reaaaally cool and easy to contact! Get their latest [...]
Chicago's My Gold Mask is a band born from a home recording experiment between singer/drummer Gretta Rochelle and guitarist Jack Armondo. Their sound is raw and beautiful. Sparse guitars and drums frame each song but the bulk of the music is carried by Rochelle's distinct and powerful voice (an instrument in itself). They self released their debut 9 track affair digitally and on limited edition cassette last month and I've fallen for it hard. I am particularly caught up in the songs that somewhat remind me of Siouxsie Sioux and her work with The Creatures. My Gold Mask [...]
(photo by Alan Whitney) This is some eerie type shit right here. Straight out of the windy city, Chicago, two-piece My Gold Mask find themselves filling their s elf-titled, nine-song debut by banging on drums, ripping alternative guitars and the growling/soaring/whirlwind vocals of Gretta Rochelle. Channeling riot grrrl acts and the women who those acts modeled themselves after (you can almost literally feel Siouxsie Sioux howling along with Rochelle), the sometimes slicing, sometimes playfully staccato guitar parts of Jack Armando play co-banana to Gretta's ethereal lyrics and sweaty drumlines. The duo aren't [...]

Chicago's My Gold Mask scares me. It's nothing personal! But listening to songs from their self-titled album, I get the feeling I'll be walking down a dark forest road and they'll be behind me, singing to me and tracking me down to steal me soul. And oh, it's wonderful. The duo has a sound that's so dark and brooding, yet not so abrasive. It's clear they listened to a lot of Pixies and White Stripes in their day. The classic alternative/garage rock sound resonates through their songs with a [...]

So I'm cooking dinner last evening, applying my patented "if it sounds good over sizzling & chopping, it must be something special" test, when despite the lowish volume (unusual, for me), something special did get my attention, in a big way - first, some sublime, slightly jazzy, revrb'y guitar, that Tarantino should consider making another movie for; then, the most striking female voice, soulful, but with a keen edge; and finally, a thumping great bass drum crescendo. Even over the culinary racket, this was clearly awesome, and a hasty check (who's this? - they're amazing) revealed that the [...]

My Gold Mask is a two piece out of Chicago that create songs that are a delicate balance between 90's alternative rock gestures and futuristic gypsy tribe shit. But the real magic happens with the versatility of Gretta Rochelle's vocals - mostly soaring but she's not afraid to trash it up and sound total gutter. I had trouble picking one mp3 so here are three. "Bitches" kinda has a Peaches-esque rap laced through. They're all epic-ish: My Gold Mask - "Bitches" My Gold [...]

An Horse came to Chicago on their way to SXSW, with a local duo, My Gold Mask opening the evening for them. Well, this was quite a night, darlings! I had heard An Horse's album, as well as their EP and wondered how two slightly thinish, young people could carry this out? Could they possibly make all that noise? Oh hell yes they could. It was a night of glorious duos. If you happen to follow me on Twitter , you've heard some of this before. I "live tweeted" the gig! It was a fantastic way [...]
