This week I have mostly been watching: Pat Kenny getting insulted on the telly : Thank God for YouTube, otherwise I would have missed this. Sure he was drunk, but it was good to hear what we've all been thinking. Bush taking advantage of Angie : You can tell that he instantly regrets it though. Wouldn't you? The Communist Manifesto : but illustrated by cartoons. Brilliant. The White House goes Stalinist : and makes an embarassing situation worse. Unicef attacks the Smurfs: but it's all [...]
A year ago, I was without my own blog--I really only turned to sites like GvB and Think Tank for the "next download" of the day--and I mean, sure, I did go out of my way to find some new artists, but it's nothing compared to how I consume music today. A year ago, I was working on an album compilation for my sister. It had 50-something CD-R's, all burned within the depths of my iTunes library. When I had them all neatly organized in a binder, I began the task that was [...]

What is it about Scottish bands that they all have to do at least one (usually multiple) spoken word songs? I enjoy a good spoken word song, but most tend to be pretty awful or gimmicky. It only seems to be the Scottish bands that can actually get away with such a thing and I don't have the slightest idea why. Is it something about the accent that makes it appealing? All of the ones included in this post feature thick accents, but there has to be more to it than that. Most bands don't [...]

Another record fair has come and gone. And as expected, so has some of my money. And in it's place I received some cd's. Mmmm lovely trade. Not the best record fair ever. Choice was limited and after about five minutes of being in the hall, my eyes decided to stop focusing. CD's blurred into one another. Artist names mixed with album titles. Colours intertwined. CD cases seem to melt before my eyes. But in amongst all that, I found a few bargains and I really do insist that you not only listen to the tracks [...]

I'm really not entirely sure how to describe My Latest Novel . A few hints of The Delgados here and there, for sure, but beyond that it's a bit more difficult to pin down (though as they hail from Scotland, I am legally required to compare them to Belle and Sebastian as well). Anyhow, whatever they're doing, they seem to be doing it quite well. They've opened for The Pixies and Sufjan Stevens. They've got great harmonies, unexpected instrumentation, and a way with words. Hell, they even got themselves dubbed "the Glaswegian Arcade Fire" recently by no [...]

Why is everyone running around acting like the new Kasabian record is Sam's Town Volume 2 ? I got a copy of it last week and I quite enjoy it. I think it's on par with their debut record (three or four killer songs, one or two other decent tunes and the rest kind of meh). From the reviews I read I expected a trainwreck of epic proportions, but nothing could be further from the case. Also, the two songs they've picked for singles are two of the weaker tracks on the [...]
Ah autumn... When you start to feel the nip of the air on your nose, the leaves fade from a vibrant green to a golden brown, dusk starts to come just a little bit sooner, and everything basically just dies. This is also the time of year that many people, including myself, start to notice that their taste in music changes ever so slightly. I start to shift from the upbeat and catchy indie pop tunes into more mellow songs with darker, lyrical overtones. I also find myself less attracted to thick, full, [...]

That's what some are saying... Well, at least NME. The band is My Latest Novel , a new Scottish five-piece whose debut full-length, Wolves , will be released in the US on 10/31. 'The Reputation Of Ross Francis' Whatcha think?
Well, this is it, the new *Sixeyes. What do you think? Now the next step is to get a web host since blogger.com is at times a large pain to deal with. That's a big step for me and it will likely take another couple of months to decide to take the plunge. But this little blog is about music, so…. * * * * * * I've been listening to an album by Scottish band, My Latest Novel (pictured left).

Good news from the My Latest Novel camp: they've landed a slot supporting The Hidden Cameras on a double-dream-date tour this autumn: Novel + Cameras: Fri 29 September Leeds Josephs Wells Sat 30 Manchester Night And Day Tue 3 October Glasgow Oran Mor Wed 4 London Union Chapel And then a couple of headline dates in their own right: Fri 13 October Glasgow The Classic Grand Sat 28 Greenock Arts Guild music my latest novel hidden cameras
Peter and the Wolf's debut album will be released on October 31 in the US, and in the rest of the world on the 6th of November, on The Worker's Institute , who previously released a lovely Sigur Ros EP, and are My Latest Novel's people in the US. Lightness is a collection of songs by Red Hunter, songs mostly recorded on 4-tracks in hotel rooms and such - lo-fi would be the keyword here then. As he puts it: " Lightness is a whole record about that feeling when you [...]
