Tweet vaso link So after seeing The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo , with its awkward-yet-awesome title sequence featuring Trent Reznor and Atticus Finch reworking Immigrant Song, I thought back to my youthful obsession with Industrial music. Reznor was an integral figure in this phase of my early teenhood due to the importance of Nine Inch Nails on my musical development. The fact that NIN is central to my musical sensibility is not something that I readily admit. Deny it all I might, Industrial music [...]

With Beavis and Butthead back on the air after nearly a decade-and-a-half hiatus, I thought I'd take a moment to offer my belated thanks to these two badly-drawn boys for turning me on to a couple of bands that otherwise would have escaped my attention. Even before MTV got out of the music video business, Beavis and Butthead were airing videos that would never have gotten any airplay via mainstream channels. Presumably channeling Mike Judge's musical tastes, Beavis and Butthead provided US viewers with the first glimpses of several well-below-the-radar bands including the Dead Milkmen, the Cramps, Daisy [...]

So, I've decided to do this facebook 30 Day Song Challenge ( you can see previous days here )thing and I figured I'd do it here on ninebullets. Feel free to contribute your thoughts in the comments section. So, without further ado: DAY 05: A SONG THAT MAKES YOU THINK OF SOMEONE: Anytime I listen to the album Sexplosion! by the Thrill Kill Kult (and I do a few times a year still) it reminds me of my friend Maura. She gave me the copy of [...]
If you're interested in seeing a band that bills itself as "alternative-industrial-electr o-sleaze," the fact that you can see it at El Torreon can only be a plus. My Life with the Thrill Kill Kul... Continue reading "My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult is coming to El Torreon" >
My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult is bringing its SiNiSteR WhiSPeRZ (yes, that's the spelling) tour to St. Louis, specifically at the Firebird on June 19. 16Volt and Twitch the Ripper are also on ... Continue reading "My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult Playing at the Firebird" >
I am not cool, but it occasionally appears that way cuz my incidental awareness of cutting-edge music. There's a simple reason for that, one which I share with tons of other fortunates out there: I have an older sibling. She's cool. She dated cool guys. Those cool punk and alternative and goth guys stopped at [...]
Ah, Valentine's Day. Reviled by most, enjoyed by the smug, and shrugged off by the belligerently ambivalent. But while most of us couldn't care less about this specific day in February, it's still an annoyance that comes around every year. Kind of like the common cold. Now, most places will have shitloads of "quirky" recommendations [...]

During my high school years in Jersey, I was enamored with just about every artist on the Wax Trax! roster. For those who don't know, Wax Trax! was a legendary Chicago-based "industrial music" label that consistently put out quality releases throughout the late 80s - mid 90s (early Ministry, KFMDM, Revolting Cocks to name some of the more recognizable artists). One of my most prominent musical memories was getting the label's "Black Box" video anthology on VHS and watching it incessantly. I set up my stereo so that I could rock out to the audio from the TV. I still [...]
It's 2011, and there's so much happening. Not only are we working on our year end lists for the best songs, albums, bands and more of 2010, but we're also prepping Advance Spins of upcoming releases from a bunch of artists and bands, ranging from Bright Eyes, Minks, The Strokes, The Decemberists, Smith Westerns and [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe
There are a lot of places I want to see in the world, and quite a few cities I want to visit in the States. I want to go to Austin, Seattle, and up until last week, Chicago was on that list, too. As luck would have it, a dear friend of mine recently moved [...]

Summer Blinked. For portions of the world, mid 80's in the day and upper 60's at night would be summer, but for a Floridian this is open the windows and wave farewell to the hellbeast that is a tropical summer. For me, with fall comes an overwhelming sense of nostalgia. I'm not really sure what exactly it is about the break in the oppressive heat that makes me run for the music of my youth, but without fail, the first hint of fall finds me scurrying for Violent Femmes , The Smithereens , Thrill Kill [...]

Around the Ripple office, Mrs Racer and I don't often agree on music. A dance music fan, she's one to lose herself in the repetitive, totally synthesized trance annoyance that causes me to want to drive pencils through my eardrums. Let's face it, I'm a rocker, not a clubber. But, that don't mean I don't like to dance. Heck, I can boogie just as good as the blue wind-up robot on my desk. I just need something with some meat to it. Some drive, some crunch and muscle. And for that perfect [...]
A reader calling him (or her, but probably him)self "K S" sent us the below track, which is apparently called "MINÄ MÄÄRÄÄN!", and is by a Finnish industrial band called Turmion Kätilöt. Holy shit, could there be any more umlauts up there? Mötley Crüe are suffering from some serious umlaut envy right now. ANYWAY, K S [...]

Chicago's My Life With Thrill Kill Kult released their self-titled debut EP in 1987 which was the thirty-ninth release on the then fledgling Wax Trax! label. The band then released three full-length CDs between 1988 and 1991 and both their fan base and the ire of conservatives (for the band's Satanic imagery) grew. The band's last disc for Wax Trax! was Sexplosion , which was Wax Trax! biggest seller, and Interscope reissued this disc when the band jumped over to the major label in 1992. As the first in a series of retrospective compilations, [...]

Megaphone ou la Mort – Camarade Coma Hailing from the world (Spain, Argentina, France) and recording in both English and French, Megaphone ou la Mort bring a vibrant brilliance to the often tepid world of modern rock. While the influences are numerous, as if often the case with most things that emanate from France, these influences are mingled; cross-cultural tidbits are swirled into the mix, styles and genres blend and meld seamlessly to create an album unlike just about any other out there. "La Poesie Du Travail," showcases right off the [...]

I know what you're thinking: "Yeah, but isn't today's music scene already inundated with raunchy S&M acid/industrial rave? I can't even wait in the lobby of the dentist's office without hearing some anonymous sex-kitten over a pulsing drum and bass loop tell me to 'suck my t*ts like a c*ock s*cker' for crying out loud." You may be right, sir or madam. But that won't stop the libidinous Lords of Acid and equally erotic throwback My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult from trying to spawn Calligulan orgies across the [...]

Dannie Flesher, co-founder of Chicago industrial record label Wax Trax!, died last week of pneumonia at age 58. While the label has been gone for awhile (it filed for bankruptcy in 1992), its influence continues today . Wax Trax! artists include Ministry , Front 242 , Revolting Cocks and My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult . After starting out in Denver, Flesher and partner Jim Nash opened the Wax Trax record store in Lincoln Park in 1978. The label was started in the early '80s. Nash died in 1995 [...]
