If you've ever wondered what psychedelic crooning might sound like, "A New Life" from Jim Jame's upcoming solo album is for you! My Morning Jacket's front-man Jim James has a solo album coming out next month called Regions Of Light And Sound Of God . From the two tracks released so far, it sounds like it's going to be a floaty pop-rock based romp with a weird side. Hints at a funky 702s vibe dance their way through your ear on the song "Know Til Now" while the aforementioned "A New Life," placed images of a seedy, [...]
‘ New Life ’ is the second track to be previewed from Jim James ’ upcoming album, Regions of Light and Sound of God , out 4th February on V2. James drew inspiration from a vintage book entitled God’s Man , a wordless 1929 woodcut novel by Lynd Ward, for the song, making parallels between his life and the life of the novel’s protagonist. With Jim James' Regions Of Light And Sound Of God out on Feb 5 I'm a little surprised we haven't heard more from it yet. But this week we got our second taste of the upcoming record with "A New Life." Seems fitting, given that a lot of the album was inspired by James' fall [...]

I saw a lot of great shows in 2012, from all the great shows in NYC during CMJ, from my trip to Bonnaroo, and my duel visits to Chicago for Lollapalooza/Pitchfork. I saw many bands both big in small in a wide variety of venues, and made many good memories along the way. When it came down to it, these shows were my absolute favorite concert moments of the year: 1. Radiohead @ Bonnaroo (June 8, 2012) 2. My Morning Jacket @ The Capitol Theatre (December [...]
LONESOME Dreams by Lord Huron is a bit of an aural ambush - there's no way you'd expect an LP of this epic, expansive quality from a band's debut work. The sound created by Michigan-born Ben Schneider and his band is not the work of a two-bit guitar-slinger - this is a slice of orchestral, subtley experimental Americana as big in ambition as the Wild West pioneers that inspire it. Like smoke signals, the dreamy vocals drift above an evocative, carefully-crafted soundscape reminiscent of a countrified My Morning Jacket or Arcade Fire - the kind of music to [...]

You can imagine the quizzical looks one might receive from family and friends when announcing you will be driving 10 hours the day after Christmas to watch the same band perform in the same venue three nights in a row. Explanations of the band's extensive catalog, no repeat set lists, and incredible live show ensue, but as you watch their eyes glaze over you know - they just don't get it. With the mere mention of this strange pilgrimage, you have gone from normal working adult to no shower hippie selling grilled cheeses out of the back of [...]

HT faves My Morning Jacket finished off their New Year's Run in style last night with a blow out at Agganis Arena in Boston. MMJ were joined by old friends Preservation Hall Brass Band and filled their main set and encore with covers and "hits" from their repertoire of originals. For the countdown, Jim James and Co. utilized Sesame Street's 12345678910 1112 before kicking in to One Big Holiday. See how it looked... Thanks to YouTuber dillsnufus we [...]

My Morning Jacket repeat-free three-night stand at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York came to a close last night. MMJ was joined by a horn section for a number of tunes including Evil Urges, Easy Morning Rebel, Victory Dance, One Big Holiday and their cover of Lionel Richie's All Night Long. What better band to play the last show I will see in 2012 than My Morning Jacket ? They are in nearly every conversation of the best live acts going right now, and for good reason. They bring it night in, and night out. They had a 3-night run at the recently re-opened historic Capitol Theatre , and they promised to not repeat any songs during any of the sets. This is an exciting concept, and one that made me nervous. Would they play any of my favorites? Would they do a rarities heavy set? This enhanced my [...]

My Morning Jacket returned to The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York last night for the second of three shows that kick off their NYE Run. The band promised no repeats throughout the three-show run which has meant the addition of lesser-played material to each setlist. [Photo by @mymorningjacket ] Fan-favorites Dancefloors, The Bear and It Beats 4 U each got the call on Night Two, while guitarist Carl Bromel led the band through Carried Away from his solo album for only the [...]

Last night, I turned the corner onto Westchester Avenue in Port Chester, New York, and was instantly overtaken by air of the crowd. Everyone was excited - young, old, green, ringed, etc. - who you were was irrelevant, you were there to see My Morning Jacket (@mymorningjacket). Fronted by John McCauley, opening act Deer Tick was armed to the teeth with everything that makes their band churn - grime, disposition, spite, fender tube amps, whatever God awful cocktail they were sipping from hotel coffee cups, and not showering (that last one is assumed and [...]

In April of 2011 My Morning Jacket released an instrumental track called Octoplasm through their Self-Hypnosis series that caught our attention for its jammy attributes. We referred to Octoplasm as "a noodle-heavy jam that sounds like it could segue into Dark Star or China Cat Sunflower at any point within the six-minute track." Ever since MMJ dropped the studio version, we've been waiting for them to debut the live edition. That finally happened last night at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York where My Morning Jacket kicked off their New Year's Run. [...]

#35: The Head and the Heart @ Forecastle [Original Post] I'd heard a song or two by Head and the Heart going into their show at Forecastle, but I'll admit that I was really just seeing them because there wasn't a lot of competition for their time slot at Forecastle. But just like what happens [...]
