Montreal's My People Sleeping's final album 'Feye' was produced by David Bryant of Godspeed You Black Emperor! Rather than go down the route of least resistance by involving some modernity a decision was made to record the whole thing to analog tape. You can judge for yourself whether the sonic aesthetics justified the hassle on 'Take Anything' because all I'll say is that as songs go it is purely belter. It starts out as if the door to Dracula's lair has just swung open and with that out pops his mistress the banshee. She appears for all the world like [...]
I'm not going to act all tough here and pretend like a soaring voice with really gentle accompaniment doesn't get me every single time. When I heard this new James Irwin track, formerly of My People Sleeping out of Montreal, I got really excited, sort of like the first time I heard the latest from F. Dangerfield . This song comes from Irwin's new record, titled Blue Dust, which should be out this June, so get yourself ready. [...]
" Blue Dust " by James Irwin (of My People Sleeping ), the first single from his album out on March 28th (via Bad Panda Records). The album is "ten meditative, crafted songs, written over five years, and recorded with many collaborators in the pines, the dogghouse, and a moldy basement in Montreal over the last 15 months". You can watch a few more of his songs at A Story Told Well . James Irwin | Blue Dust from A Story Told Well on [...]

For anyone who has been with MM since the early days you may recall our affection for a band from Montreal called My People Sleeping . They were one of the first bands we posted about, and their brilliant song Seahorse ranked highly in our top ten of 2008 . Sadly the band is no more, but former member James Irwin will be releasing a solo album on May 1st. Titled Blue Dust , it is a collection of music he has written over the last several years and recorded this winter in [...]
We've been away for a few days and so had to be prepared and organise some scheduled posts to go up while we were out and about and without internet access. Whilst away we got an e-mail from Ruby from My People Sleeping with a video love song she had put together for John (bass player in MPS and boyfriend - hers not MM's) ready for Valentines Day. We couldn't post it on the 14th which was a shame, but better late than [...]

When I hear Montreal based singer song writer Laurent Bourque sing to all the beautiful girls, I can't help but Bourque isn't yet another singer/song writer that wants to bombard you with song after song about the one that got away. Over a Josh Rouse-esque, smile inducing melody, you feel like he's waiting to find that special someone. More importantly, Bourque lets the songs on his new record - What We Talk About - move freely across his most creative thoughts. Sure he can pen a summery hit, but he's not afraid to add [...]
From Canada, My People Sleeping first seduced MM with their marvellous track Seahorse that became one of our favourite songs of 2008. Towards the end of 2009 we were delighted to find out about their debut album Feye, which we ordered immediately.Since it arrived on these shores we have been playing it pretty constantly and can heartily recommend it to everyone. James and Ruby from the band were

Filed under: Exclusive , Northern Exposure , Canada If your knowledge of the Montreal music scene begins and ends with Arcade Fire , it's time to turn your attention to the depth of talent emerging from la belle province . Thanks to the city's artist-friendly milieu and well-established institutions such as the Pop Montreal festival, the independent scene continues to birth refreshingly experimental acts that don't stick to a predictable pop/rock formula. Montreal quartet My People Sleeping is one such discovery -- after releasing [...]
Although it is always a quiet month for new releases, and much thought, time and space is given up to those obligatory end-of-year best of lists, we've still been lucky enough to hear and discovered some pretty fantastic new music in December. The best of our finds this month are below.Shearwater - Castaways mp3 (from The Golden Archipelago)Gorgeous advance from much anticipated new album.Molina &
We were clicking around the web and by happy chance discovered that My People Sleeping released their debut album Feye just a couple of days ago. They are a Canadian band who released one of MM's songs of 2008 with Seahorse (no.4 in our top ten). It was a triumph of off-kilter, downbeat, melancholic drone-pop then blended into a swelling, almost orchestral whole, and it marked them out as one to

Christina Courtin - "Rainy" It snowed all day, Wednesday; things got buried. I helped a Hasid in black push a car out of the snow. He was standing next to a telephone pole, bird chest heaving, holding a shovel. An older man was forcing the gas on a white Chevrolet, a car like my grandfather used to have, twisting the tires every which way. It skidded and slipped on the snow. I said, "Can I help push?" The younger looked at me. His eyes flashed from surprise to happiness to [...]

Last year, I was blown away by a little EP from Montreal's My People Sleeping . The songs seared with an intensity and torment I never expected. The standout track, Seahorse , painted a vivid picture using beautiful, slow, moving three-part harmonies and terrific strings, but there was an underlying man vs. machine frigidness that made parts of the song chilling. The tension and beauty of the release was something that hit me hard and stuck with me for weeks, so when the new record ended up in my inbox this weekend, I pulled a Cappadonna [...]

There are some experiences that put you firmly in "before it happened" and "after it happened" territory. Experiences that define how you look at the world. And they always seem to be experiences that you never saw coming. That was the five-month break I took from You, Me & Everyone. I'm a prizefighter, or didn't I tell you? (Part 1) It was the end of May and I was standing in a parking lot with my hands shoved halfway into tight jean [...]

Who : My People Sleeping from Montreal. What : A dreamy number somewhere in between Crimson and Clover and Neil Young 's ' After The Goldrush '. Liking their sound though. This band comprised of James Irwin (vocals/guitar), Ruby Kato Attwood (Vocals/keys), Katherine Peacock (vocals/keys/discordian) and Pat Bastedo (percussion) are currently recording music but also starting to show up on the blogs. I'm interested to hear more. Song : Time Machine .

Sometimes I can just jump right into a story and go, and other times, I stare at the ceiling, tapping keys just to tap them, hoping, waiting for something solid. I did that for a few hours today, and then I just decided to post what I had. Hope you guys enjoy! Also, if anyone has any suggestions on free hosting of songs, please let me know. Zshare is porn-ridden, Yousendit expires in half a day and I dislike Rapidshare so much I would fight it if I saw it in person. Today we try Boxster. [...]

Truth be told, I've always liked the EP more than the LP. In most cases, 5 or 6 songs is the perfect amount of time for a band to set a mood without belaboring the point. This year, there were tons of terrific EPs, and I'm happy that the list features a complete mismash of styles. Folk, frantic pop, garage, spacey shoegaze, and even pseudo Brit rock. If you are a regular reader of herohill, it goes without saying these probably aren't the biggest names and common picks. These EPs are however, a good cross section of acts that are [...]

myspace As the opening notes of Seahorse echo in your headphones, you are struck with a sense of uneasiness. Sure over the course of the song, the percussion, hand claps and pleasantries the song offers helps you settle in, but the ominous off-kilter piano that grabs you ear really makes you wonder what waits tucked around the dark corners of the song. And to be completely honest, hearing the boy/girl vocals and echoing harmonies does nothing to ease my discomfort. The quartet builds the song perfectly – a well placed, resonating note [...]

My People Sleeping - Seahorse "I can make a fortune from your face, I could build a fortress in your rib cage" - Another song, another lovely sentiment. I'm always interested in songs that can get under your skin while having the least amount of music behind it possible...but looking at the list of instruments My People Sleeping claim to use, maybe they just have a special way of embedding it all deep behind the melody. Evidently still a well-kept secret, My People [...]

My People Sleeping - "Seahorse" . It shouldn't happen, not knowing. Not knowing if something is perfect, right, good, rising; or if it's flawed, wrong, rotten, collapsing. You should be able to tell. Like you can tell if a jar is empty or full... like you can tell if a lamp is off or if it's on. But I remember (and My People Sleeping remember, I think), that there were times when I couldn't tell. When I didn't know. When I was squinting at the fucking stars and trying to figure out if I recognised them. If I knew what [...]
