The Millipedes is a new Brooklyn-based project lead by My Teenage Stride lead man Jed Smith. Not too different from My Teenage Stride, the sound is a lot more doo wop and fifties themed compared to the pop punk stylings. Although the track "I Cast You Out" retains that punk vibe. And the last song [...]

Numerous "indie pop" veined artists; or now similarly titled "surf pop" bands from Brooklyn, New York have been getting tons of accolades. Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls, The Drums, etc. all have been receiving praises from the most elitist of hipsters to the young spawning twelve year old hipsters. But one band seems to have been [...]

Here is the best of our November posts, a perfect mix tape to kick off the festive seasons and a nice reminder before we all get immersed in all those end-of-year top tens/twenties/fifties etc. And as always a couple of new ones too. Twenty five great tracks. Enjoy. Download Outer Minds - Until You're Dead mp3 Pristine nugget of 60s inspired garage rock, twangy rough-cut harmonies, a perfect hook and wall of sound noise. Download Secret Colours - In The Absence mp3 Chiming guitars, hypnotic percussion [...]

We have been fans of My Teenage Stride for a long time and their brilliant track Skin Lieutenant from 20082s Lesser Demons album was one of our favourite songs of that year. The recording project of Jedediah Smith, he/they have been previously described as sort of aural encyclopedia of 60s pop and 80s post-punk put through the spooky and idiosyncratic prism of Smith's particular emotional and cultural obsessions. Whatever that means, their output was uniformly good, mixing influences like The Smiths , Television and Jesus & Mary Chain [...]

"I Can't Go On. I'll Go On."

When it comes to my 24-year-old self being proud of my 21-year-old self (not that they're that different, but I certainly don't mean to be self-congratulatory), there are few instances when I am more so than with My Teenage Stride. They were the second ever band I ever booked. I actually don't remember how it happened anymore- I think maybe I stumbled across their MySpace. Certainly no one had ever heard of them at Swarthmore (except probably this guy ), but they came and put on a solid show of really great songs. I was pretty surprised [...]

This collaborative effort between chillwave minds Teen Daze & Houses surely seems like it was made to be, so it makes sense that they titled their first song together "Destiny". Both artists are young masters at creating dreamy songs that chill your mind and help drift you away to a ecstasy-like state. "Destinty" combines the best of both of their sounds, creating total bliss. This just continues the winning streak that Teen Daze has been on this year. It's t he craze of teen daze folks. I've had "Destiny" on loop and plan [...]

Surely, It's An Airplane! Mix And Don't Call Me Shirley A mix! What is it? Well it's a collection of songs you can groove to, but that's not important. Today marks the 30th anniversary of the release of the movie Airplane! , and because that movie gives me a fair share of the funnies (and it's been a while since one of my randomly themed mixes), I thought I'd throw this together. Strap on your seatbelt, make sure your tray table is in its upright position and take off [...]

Five out-of-town bands closed out Popfest on Sunday night to a modest but attentive crowd at the Rickshaw Stop . I came in during opener Devon Williams' set, catching the tail end of their eighties pop tinged with the bittersweet heart of a teen. Next Math and Physics Club brought the sunshine back with their quick-witted pop. Layering lyrics like "I could keep the feeling/ but the feeling's mutual" over bright, punchy guitar riffs, the Seattle-based band put out a fun set. I recommend the song "The [...]

If this show isn't a who's who of NYRM's favorites, then I don't know what is. I love all of these bands and blog about them at least fairly incessantly, so I feel that this show requires minimal description. It's a fundraiser for these bands' journeys to SXSW. They're only playing twenty minute sets (which should actually be a good prep for the music conference), and all the proceeds go to funding their respective trips to Austin. It's a good cause and should be a really fun night of absolutely wonderful Brooklyn bands and people. A few MP3s below. [...]
"To Live and Die In The Airport Lounge" by My Teenage Stride , very well might be one of the best songs of the decade, and believe it or not, the rest of their songs are pretty great too. For years Jed Smith, the mind behind MTS, has been writing pop songs influenced by the Velvet Undergroud, The Four Seasons, Television Personalities, Pink Floyd, and the Supremes that are unendingly catchy and even transcendent. Now, with a new backing band consisting of Tris Mcall and two members of psychy-indie band I'm Turning Into [...]
Monday: Beachniks + My Teenage Stride @ Bruar Falls 8pm FREE [ info ] If there's a better way to kick off the week than to attend a free show please let me know what that might just be. Tonight Cake Shop is opening its doors wide to anyone over 21 for a free show featuring some very solid acts. We really like both Beachniks and My Teenage Stride, and seeing both for free on a Monday seems like a no brainer to us. It should to you too! Beachniks [...]
