After the breakup of Georgie James, her acclaimed project with John Davis (Q and not U, Title Tracks), Laura Burhenn quickly began writing the songs that would become The Mynabirds' debut album What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood . Though considered a solo effort at first, Laura collaborated with Richard Swift who produced, played multiple instruments and provided background vocals on these stylized 60's throwback indie-pop gems. The album opens with the title track led by piano, a walking bass line and Laura's gorgeous, organic voice, before transitioning [...]

The Mynabirds - "What We Gained In The Fire" The Mynabirds' debut album opens with "What We Gained In The Fire," a song that feels more like a climax than a beginning. Nevertheless, the sequencing makes perfect sense. Musically, it puts the most dramatic and immediately impressive track at the start of the record, and thematically, it's about finding a new path following the emotional upheaval of a traumatic break-up. You can sense the shock and confusion from the start of the song, but as it progresses and builds toward its cathartic release, the feeling is calm [...]

Like Loud Loop Press, the Do-Division Street Fest and Sidewalk Sale likes to keep things local. From the food to the vendors, right down to the bands that play, the focus is directly on Chicago. This year's fest, held Saturday and Sunday, June 5th & 6th on Division between Ashland and Levitt, will have two stages booked by Empty Bottle Presents and Subterranean / House Call Entertainment chock full of great Chicago bands. Among those recruited to perform are heavy [...]

If the name Laura Burhenn rings a bell, you're probably familiar with her short-lived indie band, Georgie James. But if you aren't, then that's okay too. After all, they only lasted one full-length album (and an EP in 2008, if you want to get technical). So they say the shoe must fit, and in Burhenn's case, Georgie James wasn't the right outfit. With a desire to call the shots, the Washington songwriter took her voice, and her beautiful face as well, and put together a new band: The Mynabirds . Let's just say it's a better fit for her, [...]
Whether referring to fusions or collaborations, co-creations are often best digested with familiarity of the two or more components at hand. For instance, the food grapple looks like an apple, but its skin tastes like a grape and the insides taste like an apple. Perfectly enjoyable, but those attempting to eat it without prior familiarity [...]
Singer/songwriter Laura Bernhem joined up with producer/instrumentalist Richard Swift last year to form The Mynabirds . Together they've created What We Lose In the Fire We Gain in the Flood (April 27, Saddle Creek), a retro-styled collaborative debut that has echoes of another famous pairing: Welsh singer Aimee Duffy's and producer Bernard Butler for the monstrously successful '08 album Rockferry . Both Bernhem and Duffy have a fondness for classic R+B tinged girl-group pop, 60's blond 'do's and distinctive, neo-Dusty voices (though Bernhem's doesn't go for the exaggerated pouty edge that Duffy perfects). The Mynahbirds sound [...]
Earlier today, I chatted with Laura Burhenn. Here's our full exchange: 1. How would you describe The Mynabirds in twenty words or less? A little bit soul, gospel, garage and country, catching the spirit of the original Mynah Birds and nodding to Dusty Springfield. (The hardest question.) 2. What's the inspiration behind the LP's title and lead-off track? After [...]

The Mynabirds, " Numbers Don't Lie " (MP3 courtesy of the band's label Saddle Creek) Website Facebook Spinner article I usually try to think of something funny to say, but this picture is just too pretty. There's nothing funny to say. Okay, I'll try to think of something. How about this: "This is the moment Laura Burhenn from The Mynabirds realizes there is an actual Myna bird perched near the floor."
