"Let the Record Go" - the Mynabirds I cannot resist a repeat visit to the Mynabirds album, with this second free and legal MP3 now available (and also given what a great little set of music this comprises with the previous two selections). I just mainline this kind of sound--open my veins and inject it straight in. Laura Burhenn takes the standard blues progression and shapes it into a fiery piece of retro pop. Every last detail is exquisite, and yet the thing just plain stomps too. Right away, I love how the [...]

The pseudo-mythical Mynah Birds that included Neil Young and Rick James serve as the inspiration for the new solo project from singer/songwriter Laura Burhenn

It's been a slower week for music comparatively, but I've still got a couple great releases worth checking out. If you've never listened to Gogol Bordello before, go ahead and skip down to their late night performance. They are one of those bands that is best experienced live. I rarely take the time to listen to their studio albums, but their live performance is awesome. Also a little note about The Mynabirds, this is a new project from Laura Berhenn, the female half of Georgie James. Enjoy this great spring weather, and get ready cause the month of May is [...]

A little context: Laura Burhenn released a solo record in 2004 that is so middle-of-the-road that it is entirely forgettable. Then, she formed a band with John Davis (Q and Not U) called Georgie James. They were a sort of inoffensive update of Todd Rundgren's equally inoffensive pop. There was absolutely nothing exciting about them. Now, three years later, Burhenn signed with Saddle Creek and released another record under the moniker The Mynabirds. There was reason whatsoever to expect that The Mynabirds' debut What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood should be as [...]
Let's be honest, it's downright impossible to follow up last week's edition of the Friday Mixtape. But that's not to say this week's version is not work the listen. In fact, with appearances from the likes of M.I.A., Phosphorescent, The Antlers, Sia, and Bear In Heaven there's a ton to love/check out. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week's mix of the best new singles, remixes, and covers! NEW Singles: "Getting To Know You" by Alex B "Beautiful People" by [...]

I'm often amazed that any two people ever agree on anything. At least that is once absolved of the notion that we all should play the dutiful role that has been socially permeated throughout our conditioning societal structure. Not that I personally prescribe to anarchy, cynicism, or even laissez faire acceptance of grotesque self-interest, I don't. Only that once the bottom falls out of those injected rules of inhibition there isn't much left that holds us together aside from personal responsibility for our thoughts, feelings and actions, and even with those I'm making broad assumptions that any two people can [...]

The Mynabirds (basically singer/songwriter Laura Burhenn) are out of Portland and have released their debut on April 27 entitled 'What We Lose It The Fire We Gain In The Flood.' I think I would have to love this band EVEN if the music weren't so good just because of their name. It's a tip of the cap to the near mythical R & B super group of the 60's featuring Neil Young and Rick James among others. The record is fantastic, and is maybe my favorite debut disc so far this year. Just a beautiful sound that is [...]

This week merely serves as a stop-gap before May's bonanza of anticipated releases. But there's still a few releases that of note, like the self-titled debut from Avi Buffalo , Gogol Bordello , Unnatural Helpers , Emily Jane White , Frog Eyes and the train wreck that is Courtney Love's Hole ( previewed on Monday ). The Mynabirds offer a respite for those seeking a unique take on pop music's current trends, as this feels like a record that will endure. It announces the band as 2010's most promising newcomers. The Mynabirds is the nom de plume appended to, for most intents and purposes, the freshly varnished creative outlet of Laura Burhenn, a courageous, multi-talented singer/songwriter currently residing in Portland, Oregon. Following the dissolution of her group Georgie James, a pleasant indie pop outfit hailing from DC, Burhenn relocated clear across the country, hooked up with maverick musical chameleon Richard Swift, and recorded her debut [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars After D.C. duo Georgie James disbanded, the two members went their separate ways. Singer/songwriter Laura Burhenn found herself attempting to discover herself from behind the space of former band mates John Davis's shadow. On her solo album, What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood , Burhenn's voice soars like a bird from the onset and it's obvious that she's feeling a sense of liberation after James' demise. After first listen it's obvious that the former duo was not letting her [...]

I can't say as there are many new releases I'm excited about this week, but I am looking forward to listening to the self-titled Avi Buffalo through all the way (check out a track from the album in the 5 Score Pachyderm Mixtape V6.0 ) along with Paul's Tomb: A Triumph , the new album from Frog Eyes . Here's some other interesting releases out this week, let me know if something [...]
